I had braces for 4 years and never had a complaint one. If I ever knew there was a sharp point that would indeed come in contact with something other than my own mouth, I would always put enough wax on to completely coat it. Also, a tip for you - I'm not sure how hard you suck, but make sure your lips don't get too tight. That can cause the braces to dig into your lips and mouth - very very painful.
