i always thought that people in jail for drug selling or abuse, people who steal or rob, and small crime jail birds.. i always thought since the jails are getting over populated, we should give them a choice to join a special military jail force, for people in jail to get there time cut down or change their lives. think they would deffinantly be sent out in the front lines, but the ones that come home will either get their time cut down extremely or they can stay in and get out of jail completely but in order to do that they have to stay in for 6 years, they will get education and benifits and they will get paid to do there time too. the others like people who murder or rape will not have the chance to go since they cant really be trusted.

we've got so many druggies and stealers in jail that could really help us out and help them help themselves by changing their lives and getting off the streets and really make something of themselves.

 

There was a time that this was done quite freely. That time was when we needed cannon fodder. In the high tech Army/Navy of today, I don't think it would work well.

I had this debate with Stumbler in Steels Thread. I think I actually agree with this but after having many things pointed out to me, there can be many down falls.

I actually had a friend who (before he passed away) was given the option to enlist in the military or take four Felony counts against him. Never got to make the choice though.

im saying like back in ww2 blacks had there segregated military away from the whites. same in ww1, so segregate them and fix it so they work as a team and not as one. put them through 12 weeks of bootcamp and make it harder for them to learn to work together.

There have ALWAYS been criminals in the military---both in the U.S. and in just about every other country.

 

But not recruited from the ranks of prisoners.

 

and im not saying make them all infantry, they can take the asvab and see what they fall into, the ones that cant read or never went to school can be taught in prison and if they still cant read or write have those guys dige trenches and build camps for the soliders. teach them how to fight too, just incase if they need back up they can always be ready to jump in and help there buddys out.

 

The myth that there is honour amongst thieves is just that, a myth. There can be no guarantee that the criminals freed from jail to serve their country wouldn't abscond at the first available opportunity, to claim freedom properly.

I'm sure there was a Hollywood film made on this subject, but for some reason, the only title that springs to mind is Kellys Hero's.

As has been pointed out the movie was The Dirty Dozen. What was not pointed out was their mission was to burn Nazi officers and their wives alive at a party and that the mission was lost because one of the dozen was too much of a psychopath to follow orders.

This is true and they have also accepted people with past mental health problems as well as criminal records. One of them is responsible for a highly publicized rape and murder in Iraq.
