When was the last time we had the swine flu? I was under the assumption that this was a new strain.

 

This is a new strain. Many strains of influenza attach various warm-bodied creatures including swine, chickens, ducks and other waterfowl, humans, great apes, and migratory birds. The problem often develops when two strains or more recombine ia a host, perhaps an avian flu will spread to swine, where it does no harm, but it, through recombinant DNA will cross with a swine flu, then the hog acquires a himan flu strain, which again is pretty ineffective in it, but which through recombination mixes with the previous recombined flu and is passe on to a human. This new strain may be absolutely harmless, or it may be a very severe strain.
Once in humans, the strain may or not be able to be transmotted person to person. If not, no epidemic. If it can be transmitted, there will be an epidemic. In a world as interconnected as ours there may be a pandemic. If the strain mutates to a more dangerous form, it may be not only a pandemic, but a deadly pandemic. Most of the past severe pandemics started out as a mild form of flu, like the current swine flu, and evolved, by their second season, into deadly strains.
The current "swine flu" also contains avian and human flu elements. It could as easily have been named "chicken flu." The name swine flu stuck due to various factors, including perhaps, the Muslim wish to blame it on an "unclean" animal
