as far as i am aware, you don't have to worry at all about the break in the birth control... standard rules apply.

most women enjoy sex during their period (according to some, women are actually hornier during this time...) there is nothing unsafe that i know of - the bleeding is like natural lubrication.

some men dislike being sexual with women at this time, and certain religions even have rules against it. i suppose as a result of the stigma, some women might feel that it is wrong or dirty, et cetera.

 

It is safe to have sex while taking the sugar pills because of the effect the rest of the pills have on a woman's body.

However, women can get pregnant from having sex during their period if they are not using contraceptives. Sperm is viable inside a women's body for several days (five to ten, not specifically sure). The odds might be lower, but i wouldn't want to chance it...
