We do not hire smokers because none of us original investors smoked.
And when we did hire smokers(for a very short time),they consistently broke the rules of where and when smoking was allowed. We had a whole lot of complaints from homeowners due to our in home service people smoking in their yards and such.
We even had employees smoking at the company gas pumps.
The bottom line is... An average addicted smoker is going to smoke when and where he/she wants to. Which is their right,but not in my paying customers driveways and not in my buildings.

 

The other way to deal with it would have been to say something to the people involved and then discipline them if it happened again, rather than generalizing about ALL smokers..

I smoke..But I wouldn't do it next to a gas pump unless I was in my own car and somebody else was pumping the gas..And I wouldn't throw my cigarette butt in somebody's driveway either..I would walk to the curb and flick it in the street..

Legally it may not be discrimination but for all practical purposes it still is...To use a tired cliche, why should you care if I wanna kill myself?

 

I have been a smoker for over thirty years. I ENJOY smoking. It's the one vice I have that I can do legally and within the confines of my home and/or car. I do not drink excessively, I certainly don't do illegal drugs. I have no axe to grind against people who indulge in those activities. I believe in freedom of choice.

The anti-smoking lobby in the UK successfully (and unjustly in my opinion) persuaded our government to ban smoking in ALL public places... including company vehicles, offices, pubs and the like. They were even considering trying to enforce the ban in open-air sports arenas for christ's sake!

Okay, I appreciate that non-smokers find the smell of cigarettes unpleasant. Hell, when I smell how stale my own home is at times, even I find it unpleasant! The point is that in a society where our freedoms are being insidiously eroded by punitive laws and the vocal minority having far too much sway over the right of the individuals, then I 'm afraid I am going to take an even more stubborn stance than if I was given the choice whether I wished to continue to be a smoker or not. The more you tax me or tell me I can't smoke the more damn determined I will be to continue to smoke.

It's MY choice whether to smoke or not and I WILL NOT be bullied into giving up just because a few don't like it!!

I spent my whole day out and about in this fine city I live in.
I dropped in on several accounts to check up on the service they have been getting and I met with some new customers.
Not once in this entire day did I smell cigarette smoke,either first hand,nor on somebody`s clothes. That is the way I prefer to live!

When Austin went "Smoke Free", meaning no smoking in Public Buildings or Bars,including Restaurants, I was all for the ban on building and restaurant smoking,however I felt at the time,bar patrons should have to right to smoke inside the Bar. Bars are adult oriented places and smoking is an adult choice. If I know smoking is taking place,I will not enter. I just hate being "Snipered" with smoke.

I`m not against smokers in general,I just do not want it anywhere near me.
(As for our smoking ex-employees,They were warned several times about smoking around customers,but continued to do so.)

 

It is the same in OZ LL.
You can't smoke anywhere over here.
I have given the bastards of a thing up now for 2 and a half years and still feel as though I could take it it up like it was an hour ago that I had my last one.
Still I am determined that I wont do it again.
And yes my wife says that I smell a lot better.
Once you stop you can soon tell others who smoke but hey, thats their choice.

well, if they were warned and disregarded the warnings, then even I will concede that it was fair for them to eventually be fired..I don't consider it right for smokers to impose their habit on others who find it disgusting, it's only when non-smokers take it TOO far to the point where they're imposing on the rights of the smokers that I have an issue with it..

Let me remind all of the smokers here that this was a rant against an employee who smokes. NOT smokers in general. As I said earlier, I have many friends that smoke and are considerate to non-smokers. He is not one of them.

Smoking is a personal choice. It is not the best choice. I am worried that if we start taking away rights were will it end? Nobody in Nazi Germany thought twice about the rights and incarceration until it affected thier rights and was arrested.

 

If you did this where i live they give you a ticket if your caught.

By the way there is no hard medical evidence that second hand smoke is any more deadly than sitting in a car in rush hour traffic. There has never been a death certificate with the cause of death listed as Second Hand Smoke.

The fact that you own three companies and will not hire a smoker is discrimination. If you judge a person unfit to work for you based on that, I have two words for you.
