Barack Obama calls halt to Guantanamo trials.


Barack Obama has wasted no time in getting down to the business of government, asking prosecutors to halt controversial military trials at Guantanamo Bay within hours of his inauguration.
The request was issued via the Department of Defence even as President Obama and his wife Michelle waltzed their way through a series of glitzy inaugural balls.
Mr Obama pledged during his campaign to close the prison camp on Cuba set up in 2001 to hold detainees from the 'War on Terror'. The camp's legality has always been questioned, and former inmates and human rights experts said the harsh interrogation techniques deployed inside it amounted to torture.

The Guantanamo request was not the only measure taken by the new Obama Administration in its first hours of office. In a memorandum signed by Rahm Emanuel, the new White House chief of staff, the order went out to put the brakes on all pending regulations that the Bush regime tried to push through in its last days.

it shouldnt be closed down but I just think that if you hold a prisoner there they should have the right to know what they are being charged with like anyother prison in the US. They could just use it as a holding cell until they can get tried in a US court.

 

Its about time he actually did something and im sure his advisors did most of the work. Did you know as a U.S senator, yeah the 143 days he spent as one, he passed no laws or legislation and half the time didnt even use his vote in congress.

I mean im no McCain fan but obama's a joke.

 

When prosecuting Attorneys start testifying for the defense something is wrong. When the USA banters about the Geneva Convention, yet refuses to sign to many new agreements to hold the US accountable, something is wrong. I hope America and it's leadership starts correcting the wrongs of our recent past and on his first day it's looks like that going to happen.

 

That's not the only thing he did on day one, either. This one certainly made me smile. So much for Bush's sneaky little "midnight regulations"

Thinking about the "Midnight Regulations", why wait so long to change the Government? Over here, the losing Prime Minister resigns to the Queen, she then invites the leader of the winning party to form her Government... it's all over by lunchtime the day after an election.

As a marine it just strikes me as odd for OUR president to refuse to wear an American flag pin, and is a big supporter in his church who has an Anti-white/American Pastor...

I'm not an American, and I could wear a pin. Would that then mean I a more loyal American than your new president? Of course it doesn't. His loyalty will be seen in his presidency over the next four years.

We've talked the life out of Obama's right to worship in the church he chose to. I think, though I'm not 100% certain that there was talk about him distancing himself from the pastor ( ? ) of his church once their views were made public.

Really, you should have been around pre-election. There were more Obama/McCain threads knocking about than religious ones!! Search out a couple and drag up the old arguments again once you've read through them, but please, only IF you have something new and enlightening to add!!
