Okay, I just read another thread and one of the questions the OP asked was something like:

"would you think a woman was skanky if she'd ever had sex with a black BOY?"

Not only that, but he also went on to call couloured people "spades"...


Basically, I've never understood racism and I wanted someone smarter than me to explain exactly why people in this day and age think some people are inferior because of the colour of their skin. Surely we've evolved from the whole slavery thing... Right?

 

SOME people have evolved my little water fowl, but there's still people whose brain function can't get past colour!! It's the same people who will call people inferior because they're gay, from either sex!!

The only way they can be superior is to defame others. This then makes them feel good about going home and shagging their mother/brother/father/sister/dead grandparent.

Youd think that, but just live in the rural south sometime and you will get an earful of stuff you would think was extinct. Its not JUST the south of course, but when people get raised that way, it lasts a lifetime

Ouf it sucks to see that there are alot of ignorant people.. Im glad there are amazing members like yourselves on this forum who have evolved from that kind of small-town mentality. Because im indian i take it at heart when racist comments are made about any race.

 

It depends on how you were brought up. Chances are if you grow up around ignorance/bigotry, you'll end up being ignorant/a bigot.
Ignorance is usually passed down from generation to generation.

Racism is a way of shifting blame from themselves. After all why should it be their fault that they were fired for only showing up to work twice a week when they can so easily say that some rat bastard mexican or black took his job because they would work cheaper. Hell in this day and age every bad thing that happens to some people must be the fault of somebody else. After all it wasn't that dumb bitches fault that she burnt her twat with hot coffee at micky 'D's by driving like a moron out of the drivethrough, it was micky 'D's for serving her fresh hot coffee (which is what she ordered) in the first place.
Racism is nothing more than an excuse to shift blame and hate other people because you are too f***** lazy to get off your ass and do it, whatever it is.

We haven't had time to evolve out of it, that's the problem.There's still that little voice somewhere in the evolutionary psyche that says "kill all strangers and then there's more likely to be enough food for our tribe."

Mostly, this gets sublimated into tribal-style support for football teams and crowing over your city being more important than mine - all completely trivial stuff that doesn't, or at least shouldn't, cause any major problems. There are still a few knuckleheads around, though, who let it override their brain power and refuse to accept that someone's skin colour is no more relevant to life than their hair colour, the number of freckles on their left knee, or any other superficial aspect.

What's really amazing is that they don't seem to have any clue how offensive it is to normal, non-bigoted people.

The alternative explanation, of course, is that they're just provocateurs who like to take advantage of their anonymity to see how much trouble they can cause.

 

Problem is, evolution doesn't work that way. Unfortunately the human race doesn't get to just wake up one day and go, "My, but that racism thing was a mite silly. 'Tis a good thing we can now think past it!" Only way to get racism out of the gene pool is to breed against it while teaching against it, and unfortunately stupid people breed more than smart people...

 

I don't think it's necessary for us to wait until evolution solves the problem. As others have pointed out, man is a tribal animal, hard-wired for group identification. But there's such a thing as socialization, and such a thing as learned behavior. We just have to keep working to make racism unacceptable in our society.

As I've said in other threads, though, I think eventually this problem will take care of itself, because races/ethnic groups no longer enjoy the isolation they once did. Ultimately, I think that will result in a blurring of racial distinctions. And that, I think, will be a good thing.

 

but what do you mean when you say this? are you talking about (like in a certain south park episode) all races breeding into each other until there is literally one race?

i'm of mixed minds about that idea myself... i mean it would obviously get rid of all racism on earth, but isn't culture also important? a lot of people base their whole identity on the culture in which they grew up. now while i'm more a fan of finding your own identity, i suppose that once people realised that all races were becoming one there would be a hate movement to keep the races separate... or maybe i'm underestimating the human race because it's 4am and i'm overtired :-/

 

That was where the "teach against" it idea comes into play. Not entirely seperate ideas, either. By preaching a certain set of societal mores, only those who practice those morals are considered an acceptable breeding partner by the rest of the society. As other ideas become more marginal, the groups supporting the, have less oppurtunity to breed, and thus less of a captive audience to pass their ideas to.

Yup. All comes down to sex in the end, one way or the other...

 

I would like to see each race realize acceptance lies beyond ethnicity and social standing. That somehow, we could learn to comfort one another and empathize when it's asked of us.

We are all human, and should treat each other as such.


And I saw Kimiko's "blurring of racial distinctions" comment similiarly, at least at first. I hope 'blurring' meant "to overlook" or "forgive", because I could understand the unclear wording.

But some wouldn't see racial blending as a solution, but more of a firestarter
