It's not a full myth. Cousins are far enough to make it pretty unlikely, but still certainly possible, to have defects.

If you get any closer than cousins, then it starts to become probable. It's based on what the percentage is of similar DNA. A person's DNA is a 50% match to their parents, siblings & children. It's a 25% match to their grandparents, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews & grandchildren. It's only a 12.5% match to their cousin.

Your kids after fucking a 50% match (sibling) are a 75% match to you with a 25% overlap. That overlapping 25% is going to expose some recessive genes... Things you're carrying but aren't effecting you.

Your kids after fucking a 12.5% match (cousin) are a 56.25% match to you with a 6.25% overlap. That overlapping 6.25% is not a whole hell of a lot. It's still that much higher risk of exposing recessive genes, but you're fine.

However, repeating the pattern is additive. Your grandchildren after you've fucked your cousin & your child grew up & fucked their cousin are a 40.625% match to you with a 18.75% overlap (and some of that is overlapping overlap, which adds more risk).

Your grandchildren after you've fucked your cousin, your sibling fucked another cousin, and those two (your child & niece/nephew, who are cousins to one another) fucked one another are a 43.75% match to you with a 24.9375% overlap and a 24.9375% overlap from your sibling as well. Their recessive genes from your parents are totaling 37.40625% of overlaps, which is really high.
