Same thing here, most of them are on the interstates picking up trash or cutting grass. Almost never see any obviously armed guards, just a truck with a trailer (with a port-a-john) and a prison bus.

As I understand it, the work details are voluntary and only those prisoners who are not flight risks are allowed. If I were incarcerated, I would jump at the chance to be out working.

 

I am conflicted

As an officer in a labor union I attended central meetings where a number of unions were represented. The Laborer's Union railed against these work crews taking their jobs, and I could sympathise. On the other hand, most of the work they do would not be done at all were it not for them. On balance, I favor convict labor. Convicts could maybe rebuild some of the old WPA/PWA projects that are falling apart due to the lack of workers.

 

Or Obama could make good on his promise and use the stimulus funds to hire the unemployed to do that.

 

I'll have to pay closer attention next time I see a crew if the guards carry a rifle or not. They leave bright orange garbage bags full of trash along the road.

 

Let's face it folks - if prisoners are kept in their cells 24/7 then the 'system' gets bolloxed for 'holiday camp justice' - if prisoners are put to work, cleaning, rebuilding, etc - the system is accused of >something else?> Sorry, I haven't read the thread through properly *pretends not to care*

commit the crime, do the time. we need much tougher sentences. get rid of the country club prisons, no appeals on death sentence, etc. and watch the crime drop

While I understand the concept of commit the crime do the time, have you ever been to a state penitentiary? trust me when I say they are no country clubs, and no appeals on the death sentence is simply bone headed. to date so many innocent people have had to be released from death that a moritorium on the death penalty has been decalred in the state of Michigan. While I am neither a proponent nor opponent of the death penalty...if you excute a single innocent person then the whole system has failed. They do not always get it right.

 

That must be a BIG difference cross-state, as I have NEVER seen more than 2 on a crew, which would equate to about 20% or less.


I have also never seen them NOT under guard, with rifles-----here or in Southern Va.
