A white skinned person will tan in a climate that causes such an effect...... That is how the body adapts to the sun......and yes Shake, that I suppose could be called the first stages of evolution, or a short term evolution at least.

I followed on by saying that....after generations and generations have lived in that climate, eventually genetics will take over and babies of colour will start being produced by what would be a family descended from originally white skinned parents.

Is that not evolution in progress?

No, it isn't. Getting a tan doesn't alter one's genetic makeup in the least, and does not alter one's chances of having dark-skinned offspring. Yes, dark-skinned people evolved in equatorial climates, but not by the mechanism you propose.

Yes, it is. And it has nothing whatsoever to do with individuals getting a tan. It has to do with genetic mutation and natural selection.

 

My whole point revolves around the idea that skin colour is a result of exposure to certain climate conditions.

Look at it another way perhaps......

Maybe those white skinned people, such as myself even, were originally of black skinned descent..........but, due to lack of an equatorial climate, as people migrated away from the equator......that same genetic/evolutionary mechanism kicked in eventually.......

just in reverse!!

 

Some folks, I'm one of them, tan easily. Others find it nearly impossible to get a tan. That is why skin cancer in endemic among light skinned people who have settled in the tropics.
As for the original question, it is still a matter of prestige. Light skins are held in high regard because the whites were the colonial rulers and the non-whites were the ruled. Add the chauvinist view of women as subservient to men and you get men of color looking for a relationship where they can dominate a female of the "rulers" race.

That's all true...that darker skin pigmentation was an evolutionary adaptation to intense sunlight. The problem was with your statement about getting a tan, which has nothing whatsoever to do with it.
