Homosexuality is not a defect. It is a natural means of population control. Evidence has shown, for example, that in both in humans and other animal species in areas where populations increase homosexual behavior increases. Homosexuality in the right proportion helps keep a balance in the population.

Further, there is no medical or psychiatric evidence that homosexuality is caused by any defect or is any defect. In 1957 Evelyn Hooker ran an interesting experiment, using the three most commonly used psychiatric evaluation tests of the day she had community samples of gay men and straight men submit to these tests. She then had the most well regarded psychiatrists evaluate the results of these tests, withholding the subjects sexual orientation from the psychiatrists. The psychiatrists rated the 2/3rds of gay men, and 2/3rds of straight men in the highest range of psychological adjustment. In other words, gay men were just as psychologically fit as straight men. She also had the psychiatrists try to determine the sexual orientation of the subjects based on the results of the evaluations. They determined the sexual orientation of the subjects at a rate no better than flipping a coin.

This was the first psychological research on a non-clinical sample of gay men in history. It showed there was no connection between homosexuality and mental disease or defect, per se. Many attempts through differing methods have been made to try and connect homosexuality with mental illness through objective research since. No connection has ever been made.

The APA's official position is that LGBT persons are at no etiological disadvantage when compared to straight people in regards to mental health.
