Nicolas Berdyaev's books are well worth a read for anyone interested in existentialism, aesthetics, theology, or philosophy in general. These particular quotations come from his book Dream and Reality: An Essay in Autobiography:

"Sex is not merely one function of the human organism: it pervades man's being as a whole. . . sex, moreover, is evidence of the fallen condition of man: his attitude to sex even reveals something shameful and demeaning to his dignity. . . . the sexual act is in itself unseemly and ugly. . . .in a very definite sense there is something degrading about sexual life. . . . the life of sex is impersonal, generic; it reduces man to a plaything of biological and physiological processes."

It is a direct result, I believe, of males not being able to properly fuck, and too lazy and frightened to learn. And so its reduced to something beneath them (because they can't last 30 seconds with her beneath him) and so they cover that personal failing and insecurity by demonizing sex and women in the process.

Dangerous stuff there, and what I believe is the direct cause of many of America's unique kind of problems and politics.

Interesting . . .Berdyaev was an ardent socialist and an advocate of many of the social programs that I suspect you'd support, Stumbler. He was also persecuted and driven into exile by the Bolshevik party when they gained power in his native Russia.

 

He also has some very profound things to say about love.

 

Sorry, on of my touchy points going clear back to St. Augustine and that "God give me chastity, but not yet," bullshit, so he can fuck HIS brains out while he getting ready to write the No Fucking Fun Handbook.

Sounded more like a Puritan to me, but it appears I may have an educational opportunity here. I now suspect there must be more to Berdyaev than my first impression.

It's interesting, because Berdyaev is the absolute antithesis of someone like De Sade and yet I admire them both. We can discuss Augustine at another time, too.

Here is one of Berdyaev's many quotations on love (he, by the way, was happily married for many years):

"Love is personal and individual, that which inclines towards the unique, unrepeatable and irreplaceable person of man or woman. Sexual passion easily agrees to substitution, and substitution is in fact possible. So far from increasing intense love-eros may even weaken sexual passion. "

 

Very true.

 

Was he a writer, philosopher, politician?

I think my view of this will always be skewed due to my wife, who is actually capable of unconditional love, but at the same time never wanted for the fun or passion to seep out of our lives. There were no substitutes to that.

But I also have to admit we might have allowed our sexual passion to weaken but my wife wanted to explore sex and make it our adult form of play. Maybe we just never grew up. Still haven't.
