  3. Hello,

You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

I need to be able to recognize you in that picture. You need to have some pictures of your self in your gallery so I can compare that picture.

Please note that verification is completely optional and it won't give you any extra features or access. You will have a check mark (as I have now, if you want to look) and verification will only mean that you are who you say you are.

You may not use a fake pictures for verification. If you try to verify your account with a fake picture or someone else picture, or just spam me with fake pictures, you will get Banned!

The pictures that you will send me for verification won't be public

    Best regards,

    StanleyOG.

M66 from Hubble- 36 million light years away in the constellation Leo. If I remember correctly M66 can be faintly seen with the naked eye if the sky is very dark and you have good eyesight.

I guess we already have lots of heavenly bodies here but what the heck. OHMS if you keep posting so will I. I never get tired of pretty pictures from space and NASA long ago figured out the pretty pictures sell programs otherwise there would have been no outcry to save Hubble.

Composite center of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, from the Spitzer space telescope. Hubble sees in visible light like we see. Spitzer sees in the infrared which allows it to better see through the dust in space between here and the galaxy center.
We experience the infrared light as heat. When you heat up the pan to fry your eggs that's infrared.

Well the moon always shows us the same face so from Earth the full moon is pretty much always the same so I decided to go hunt something a little different. This is the back side of the moon as seen from Apollo 16 and never seen directly here at home. I believe it was taken with a Hasselblad camera in 70mm X 70mm format. At least that's what they used during the landing. No digital back then just good old fashioned film. Pretty good quality don't you think?

Ah, yea, one of the backside of the Moon would be a great addition to the collection. Is there a high res original, anywhere that you know of?

I'll post a bunch more, a little later.

Crab Nebula-M1 from Hubble. Can be seen without a telescope. This is literally a star in the process of violently exploding. It was once a super-nova that out-shown all the stars in the sky but has long since faded.

Hubble takes pictures in black and white by the way. NASA adds the colors to make them pretty. In some cases the individual colors signify some specific data they were measuring. Other times they just make a pretty picture. NASA fully understands how compelling they are.

In many cases the actual picture is of secondary importance to the astronomer. The observations contain reams of data that they use to figure out how far away the object is, how hot it is, what it's chemical make up is, how fast it's moving and lots more. Hubble is much more than a mirror and a camera. It has various specialized instruments for analyzing light. The pictures are to an extent a side effect. Seems odd doesn't it.

    Deep Space Photo-Hubble-

Hubble pinpoints the farthest objects that have ever been seen with it's new Infrared camera that was installed during the repair mission. The little pinpoints of light are approximately 13.2 billion light years away and formed when the universe was only about 500 million years old so they are also the oldest object yet recorded. A billion years is a million decades and we are only two decades from the birth of Christ to give you a benchmark.

Saturn's Moons Dione and Titan from Cassini
Explanation: What would it be like to see a sky with many moons? Such is the sky above Saturn. When appearing close to each other, moons will show a similar phase. A view with two of the more famous moons of Saturn in gibbous phase was captured last month by the robot spacecraft Cassini now orbiting Saturn. Titan, on the left, is among the largest moons in the Solar System and is perpetually shrouded in clouds. In 2005, the Huygens probe landed on Titan and gave humanity its first view of its unusual surface. Dione, on the right, has less than a quarter of Titan's diameter and has no significant atmosphere. The above uncalibrated image was taken on April 10 after Cassini swooped by each moon the previous week.
