Loved them

I read and loved most of ejls' work a couple of months ago and I agree, the Nora stories were right up my alley. Quality and sensitive work. I only regret not leaving comments then. el hanes, Mark Twayn, Luvbroker, Bistander, DC, and many more like them; love them all.

I crab fish in the winter and when the boat's ready to go and the weather's still too bad to fish, I'm as likely to be here as anywhere. Since the first of the year the weather has sucked a lot and I've read a lot.

I just can't help whining because I'm too lazy to find those single story author's work when the Trolls have submarined their ratings. Unless I luck out and find them recommended. Your are so right about me missing a lot of exellent work because I'm too lazy to check out stories with poor ratings. I often find them to be exellent if I somehow stumble across them.

You are right, the weather has sucked up here.

 

I don't know if this is a symptom of the issue or not but when I look at my stories on the screen that shows up when you first sign in one of my stories has a 90.9%. When I go look in the categories that it is in the score is different(91% in one and 92% in another). It is the same for my other stories.

It seems odd.

Also, it seems odd that one of my stories with a higher percentage of negative votes has a higher score than one with a lower percentage of negative votes.

Could someone explain these to me?

 

The votes on the "Your Stories" are updated in real time, ie constantly but scores in other sections are only updated every quarter or half an hour which could explain the difference.

In the "Your Stories" I certainly notice that votes % calculated isn't correct for the actual positives and negatives shown there, at times. Other times its spot on.

 

With no disrespect meant at all, I probably will stay away. While I've done my share of reading 19th century and before novels with paragraphs running over pages, reading from the screen is an altogether harder task. A personal defect maybe, but shared with many others, I do find it very hard to find where the 31st line is after reading the 30th.

As for punctuation, go for whatever appeals to you and allows you to express yourself. Some readers may find it a hurdle too high, but others will battle through to read your great style.

 

What contest?

Rating system

I have to admit, I haven't read every post in this thread and maybe someone already posted the answer. But here's the question anyway. Does the number of stories play into the total rating somehow?

There are some authors rated at the top who have many more stories than me, one with hundreds, but the actual scores on those stories are poor. So it can't be just an average. There must be some "bonus" given to the count of stories as well.

If that's the case one could write a whole bunch of short short stories just to improve their overall rating. I have very few like that (short that is). Most are a "reasonable" length, not too short but not so long the reader gets tired and wants to move on (though I did make a few too long and wish now I had broken them up).

If you're talking about the Highest Rated Authors list, yes, more prolific authors have an advantage. I'm not sure whether it has to do with the number of stories or the word count though.

Yes, there is the potential for abuse (someone could write a thousand pieces of junk and score high on the list) but on the other hand, would it be any better if an author can make the top of the list by writing one masterpiece, while those of us who have written literally hundreds of stories that score reasonably well but not perfect end up ten to fifteen pages down? I don't think there's a correct answer; both ways of doing it have their disadvantages. As for me (a prolific author), I like the way it is right now, but that's just my opinion and a very self-centered one at that.
