TS, you know how I feel about your ass......

    Now, about that flag....

The negative connotations related to the Confederate flag are somewhat justified in most cases.

The revival and display of the Confederate flag are USUALLY associated with one of two things: Primarily, the issue of State's Rights and a defiance of the Federal government. In this regard, there are many Southerners (although probably most are transplanted Northerners) who are opposed to the use of the Confederate flag. Most Northerners are apparently against the use of the Confederate flag, but there are clearly a large minority who support it or who are neutral on the topic.

The second thing is the racist connection. This is a bit more problematic, because I believe that there are only a minority of people (both South AND North) who display the Confederate flag for racist reasons---but this, of course, draws the most attention and creates the erroneous impression that the Confederate flag is, in itself, the symbol for SLAVERY.

While the Confederate government collectively and the state governments of those individual polities that seceded from the Union were clearly acting to support the continued existence of the institution of slavery, and those governments followed the Confederate flag, it is MUCH less clear what the average Southerner in 1861-1865 saw in that symbol.

Since 75% of Southern families did not own slaves and there was (according to voting patterns both within Southern state legislatures and in the popular vote----and remember, only adult WHITE MALES could vote), depending on which state you are looking at, anywhere from 10% to 40% of the Southern population OPPOSED slavery, it is most likely that the SYMBOL of the Confederate flag, for most Southerners, stood for support of States' Rights and local autonomy rather than support of slavery.

Today, the display of the Confederate flag evokes a number of reactions, clearly dependant on your point of view. I believe that the majority who display it do it for nostalgic reasons---pride in one's home state and the heritage of many other things quite different from the memories of slavery. The next largest group display the Confederate flag as that symbol of support for States' Rights and a declaration of defiance to what they see as unConstitutional interference from the Federal government. The smallest group display the flag for racist reasons. That small group are turds.

One last note: While it is a rare sight, I have, in my lifetime, seen scores of African-Americans, both in the North and in the South, wearing hats, shirts, belt-buckles, etc. displaying the Confederate flag. What do you think it means to them?

    first, and foremost. gorgeous ass!!

Second. I know I'm from about as north as it gets, so I know I don't understand entirely. BUT, you cannot deny the fact that slavery was an enormous driving force in the creation of that flag (and yes, all others representing the south during the civil war).

IMO, if you're proud of were you live, wave your state's flag.

Sort of the same thing that happened with the Hindu swastika being co-opted by the Nazis.

I am a son of the South and I am proud of many aspects of the Southern way of life. But I also must admit there are many things that are deserving of shame and the problem is the "Stars and Bars" can be offensive to many. Even it's less offensive use, honoring southern heritage, is not totally benign.

Not a big believer in that everyone has a right to not be offended, but the Confederate Battle Flag offends enough people that I chose years ago to quit flying/displaying it in my home or on my cars. Can't say that I am any more tolerant than I was as a young man, just don't gain any satisfaction from stirring that pot anymore.

    Awesome!

    Heritage!

There is nothing more racist about the Confederate flag than there is about waving a mexican flag on may 5th yet you don't hear anyone screaming about that. On the contrary, they all say it's there heritage.

Some say it is a "shameful reminder of slavery or segregation" for many African-Americans. Many hate groups have begun using this flag to represent hate. But, not all southerners see the flag as a symbol of hate. Instead, they see it as a part of their heritage their ancestors died for. Whether it is wrong or right, we should never forget the men that died fighting for a cause they believed in. However, we shouldn't allow hate groups to use this flag to further their own hate and prejudice.

For years, the civil war raged on and at the end of the struggle, we all became one nation of Americans. Do you know if one or more of your ancestors fought in the civil war? What side do you think they fought on? Would you be proud of them or embarrassed by their choice? Did you know that there were many African-American's, who proudly fought alongside of the Confederate troops?

    </U>
The Confederate flag should fly for those, who died in the belief that they were trying to make America better. But, out of the ashes of the civil war, America became one nation under God. Furthermore, as Americans, we should be proud of our history and learn from it, as we grow. In the 20th century, the Confederate battle flag shouldn't be discriminated against, because of the behavior of extremist. Therefore, we should not blame the flag for its misuse, because the flag is not the enemy!

this thread was not meant to be offensive...i apologize to anyone who may have been offended...

Althought I believe your arguments are valid, How different would it be to say.
"The Nazi flag should fly for those, who died in the belief that they were trying to make Germany better. "

    ???????:(

Hi just saw this tread and wanted too add something, until a few years ago my husband and myself were acw re-enactors on the confederate side,my husband can trace an ancestor, who fought for the south, and returned too england in 1872,our own british history was one of dire repression, and from reading his letters home he believed he was fighting for the freedom of an oppressed state, not too keep slavery,as many workers at that time in britain were treat as such,he came from sheffield,a city that provided much off the arms for both sides, although,we only fought "make believe battles"he felt a pride in the flag of a country not of his own,and as for racism, never in the 12 years i have known him ever too pass a racist remark,"live and let live"is his byword.

There is a BIG difference in this. The NAZI flag is/was NOT the German flag. It was the flag adopted FOR Germany (taken and bastardized from a Hindi symbol supposedly connected to Hitler's belief in a superior Aryan race) by the leaders of the NATIONAL SOCIALIST GERMAN WORKER'S PARTY-----the Fascist MINORITY that took over Germany under Hitler in 1933.

That IS a symbol of racism, anti-Semitism and war-mongering. The symbol of a mad man.

    Wow, Umpire2 is obviously educated.

People fight under flags they don't entirely believe in, such as people from the south. But since that flag is generally related to slavery it gets an unfair negative connotation, if you want that to change you will have to fight for it.

For me on the other hand, I'd rather just be proud of my British ancestry, and even that has it's dark moments. (Much better since religion started being treated as a fictional rather than factual)

A lot of Germans in ww2 fought for their family and not for Hitler's ideas. A lot of people in the south fought for their families and not for preserving racism.

But in the end, the symbol is related to a meaning, and that meaning is ignorance, racism, and slavery (and incest.)

    Nice ass though ;)
