If I were you, I wouldn't count on it. Lasting all day long that is. Especially if your then husband is also virgin or didn't have sex in a long time. And from what I've hear, some virgin girls don't enjoy their first time one bit. Like most of the plainly sensible, right-thinking people here, I spent a long time determined to wait until I was in a sound relationship with someone special and excellent. Unfortunately, I've reached the quarter-century mark without having had a girlfriend, which I can't help but consider worthy of some kind of certificate (I get one every time I complete a degree and they're comparatively simple).

In the olden days, this failure was mostly down to appallingly mal-formed social skills, which were only just starting to slowly improve by the time I left school at 18. Since then there have been a few opportunities to at least get a girlfriend; all of which I missed, for which I shall be self-excoriating to my dying day.

By the time I left my last full-time job, a couple of years ago, I'd briskly worked through crushes on half of my team (I worked in what was almost certainly the most attractive admin team in all of Northern England) and decided that I'd had quite enough of this. Here was a fork in the road: either I could carry on falling for every pretty girl I saw, eventually to go mad with the emotion-mincing frustration of it all; or I could... simply stop caring.

I went for the second option and, actually, I've felt happier since. With a bit of mental discipline it isn't that hard, it would seem, to talk yourself out of seeking relationships or intimacy. I call it a-romanticism. Nowadays, I spent more time brooding over What Might Have Been than looking ahead to what could be.
