the point being the woman of your dreams wouldnt have this baggage to bring because you wouldnt see her for her ethnicity.. but the fact that she's the woman of your dreams.. the only one that can bring that 'baggage' is yourself..

you can consider the idea overromantisized.. overrated.. or even unrealistic in terms of movies and books or what have you.. but why even exclude the possibility when that very possibility could be the very thing to maximize your happiness?? in fact.. excludeing the possibility would defeat the purpose behind maximizeing happiness..

in your original post you didnt even say anything about being happy which would have been fine with me.. if you want live miserable thats up to you, friend.. but if you claim to want to be happy but limit your oppertunities by excludeing the *ahem* 'unfamiliar'..

So I have a few random things to say on this subject:

1) I have family in SC. And I can see interracial couples getting a lot of shit because until recently Columbia, SC was still flying a confederate flag ABOVE the US flag at the capital building.

2) In SC (and I'm sure other southern states as well) all hospitals are required (by law if I'm not mistaken) to have ALL private rooms. This is so biggoted white people will never be faced with the awkward situation of having to share their room with a black person.

3) As far as Perv's worries of his children having a hard time for being "mixed"....I'm African American but come from a long line of VERY fair skinned ancestors. This gives me the appearance of being mulatto (or "mixed" as most people call it) even though I'm not. I've been asked if I'm "mixed" and even part indian. But I've never been treated differently (to my knowledge for it). When I'm treated differently it's because people think I'm black.

4) I grew up going to Catholic school, living in white neighborhoods, and white towns. I've never even dated a black man. The schools I attended never had more than 3 or 4 black kids in each grade and that was at most. Therefore, I became what I jokingly refer to as an "OREO" (Black on the outside, white in the middle). Because I am. I love rock music, have never used ebonics, I know more about hippies than the black panthers, and I've never really identified with "black culture". So, my white boyfriend doesn't feel like I bring any baggage to the relationship because he says "I'm the whitest person he knows." We like the same music, movies, tv shows (for the most part), people, actors, etc. There's no cultural gap to be found (except the fact that his family is Bulgarian and they have a lot of Eastern European traditions that I've never been exposed to...but most white people haven't).

5) As far as mixed children having a harder childhood due to adversity, most of my 19 nieces and nephews are mixed and they don't have any problems. Then again, I live in Ohio. The nieces and nephews that do seem to have problems are the ones who a little hoodlums. They hang with the wrong crowds and get into a lot of trouble (sometimes leading to jail time). So I think it's a matter of upbringing. The situation I was raised in, I didn't see color. Not until it was pointed out to me. And I've had friends who didn't ever notice I was black because I don't "act black" (whatever that means).

 

And I'd also like to add that one of the reasons you're getting so many "liberal" responses (pro-interracial) is that this is a fairly liberal and openminded place. We're not quick to judge around here. So you're getting skewed results. If you asked the same question in a SC, AL, KY chatroom I'll bet you'd get more of a 50/50 response. But I could be wrong.

I have to say that this thread is (for the most part) looking at the "whites don't approve of interracial couples". But I know there's a VERY large population of African Americans who also look down on it. There are a few mentalities to deal with:

The Traitor: Whites held us down so long! How could you date one?
The Last Good Black Man: There are so few black men who are successful. Why do the white women have to come steal them all?
The Wannabe Whitey: You're just ashamed of your heritage and you're trying to be white.
The I'm Too Good for My Own Race: You're well educated and successful and us n*ggers aren't good enough for you.

I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting. But I'm black and I've always caught shit for dating white guys. But with my upbringing I just don't relate to most of the black people I meet. I don't like the same music or movies. I don't spend a fortune getting my hair "did" (just a joke...no one freak out). And they tend to see me as stuck up and arrogant because I speak proper English.

With all of that I get caught in a weird sort of limbo. I'm too white to hang out with the black kids (I don't have any "street cred") but they still expect me to "side with my race" and only date black men.

I also don't see much intolerance to it. I'm up north in england, and its not commented on, that I've seen.

Personally, I'm attracted to white caucasian women. I guess thats just how I'm wired.

 

Whether or not you agree with this guy (I don't), he's got the right to his opinion and expressing it is not out-of-bounds with this thread. I was getting a little bored of the "oh sure, I'm tolerant" response that everyone seems to be giving, anyway.

 

...As for the question, I've been part of a few interracial relationships. All the while, I've lived in larger metropolitan areas on the west coast, where people are rather accepting/indifferent to the practice.

When my ex came to visit me during summer break one year (I used to live in the South) it was a much different story. We went to the mall one day and we got stares from nearly half of the people there (all white). I never saw too many interracial couples (that didn't get broken up by meddling parents) while I was growing up, and it seems to still be a shock to a lot of people. But if you confronted them about it, most would claim to be okay with it (maybe not comfortable).

I, for one, am fine with the idea (it would be mighty hypocritical of me otherwise!) I'm not so sure what I think about raising hapa kids, but I don't think that would factor into any kind of decision I make about that. I say this because I went to college with some hapas who I know struggled with identity issues. That may have had something to do with "that period" in their lives and the general culture at the school I went to, but it sticks in my mind.

 

Back in '86 or '87, I worked in an office with a couple of black guys, and they always had the radio on a black station. One morning, the DJ was having people call in with their opinions on this subject. The callers (all black) were overwelmingly opposed to it. For some reason, that surprised the heck out of me. I guess I had always looked at it from the southern white male perspective.

Anyway, that was 20 years ago. I'm sure responses would be a lot different today.
