That, my dear, all depends on where you are in the country. I'm from the west coast and when I see a mixed couple I'm usually staring the same reason I stare at a non-mixed couple - I'm checking out the woman. I used to date a black woman who was a vice-president at a community bank. I was her first white guy, and I asked her why one didn't see more black women and white men together. I think it depends where you are and how common it is in that area. Hubby and I NEVER get looks or comments at home. But we do when we head south. Especially in Louisville, KY. But the reason we get it there is odd. There's an overwhelming population of BM/WF couples in Louisville. A really common sight to see either a white woman toting along her mixed kids or to see the couple or their whole family. But I can't for the life of me recall ever seeing another WM/BF couple. And we DO get looks and whispers while the other sort is so common I never notice people commenting on them.

The other place we get a lot of attention (which still surprises me to this day) is NYC. Especially old biddies on the subway. I'm not sure what it is but every time we go to NYC we get some kind of looks or whispers before we leave. So strange for such a diverse city. But that's the way it is.

It's funny you say that cause I've always experienced the other side of that. Black women dating white men is fine. But let a white woman get with a black man and all hell breaks loose. The "reason" as has been explained to me many times, is that there are so few "successful" black men. Those that earn a living off something other than drugs and guns, don't run in a gang, haven't served time in jail, don't have 100 kids from 100 different women, etc. A man with those qualities in a black neighborhood is sort of a unicorn. And their opposite is very unlikely to attract a white woman.. or any woman for that matter, really. So when one of the "good ones" is scooped up by a white woman, there's this stigma that she's "stealing" one of the few good black men left. And that as a white woman, she has far more options available to her as far as successful men are concerned than a black woman does. So it's seen as theft by the woman and a betrayal by the man.

I can kind of understand the logic there. Just in terms of the ratio of honest, hard working black women in a "ghetto" vs. honest, hardworking black men. When you have so little to choose from, it can seem unfair for someone who was born with more advantages in the first place to come along and take away one of your options.

But PERSONALLY, I don't think it's anyone's business but the two involved. You can't help who you love. And if the couple is happy with each other, then whose business is it whether or not they're the same race? I think everyone should just be happy when interracial couples get together cause it just means there's a chance that the next generation will be that much closer to blurring the racial lines. And ultimately, if we could all just mix things up and mate like rabbits, then there wouldn't be any of this crazy racial stuff to get in the way in the first place!
