What to call people.

You mentioned that they are your friends, then talk to them like any friend, do you have special names for your other friends.

I'm not saying the subject should be taboo, but seriously, if someone is your friend, I would assume it's because you have shared interests. Stop thinking of your friend as a gay friend, and instead, just a friend, who happens to be gay. Being gay or straight is part of a person, but it's only a part--we seem to let the oddest things define identity in our society. Scientists must be lab coat wearing nerds with no interests besides science. Gays must be sexual perverts who go around fucking other men non stop. Lesbians love nothing but licking vaginas and playing sports.

I know teachers who brew beer, doctors who enjoy rock climbing, and many are both straight and gay. Who someone chooses to have sex with just seems like something that doesn't really concern me unless I'm trying to have sex with the person, lol!

 

I have gay friends that I openly refer to as faggots. Not that I'm against what they do, I'm not into it myself but being open-minded and educated, I know there's nothing wrong with it. Still, I often refer to them like that for a couple of reasons: first, I usually enjoy offensive jokes and that's a little part of it. And second, to try to remove the usage of the word. Like "yankee" that used to be an offensive word towards Americans until they decided to embrace it.

 

Gay Friends

Maybe you should do like I do. I have many gay friends and I never bring up the subject of gay. Sometimes the subject comes up from them and I talk with them about it. But the subject is usually between my gay friends so I am not embarrassed by my stupidity.

I hardly see the problem. If you feel uncomfortable with what you spoke out loud then just openly apologise, and if they don't mind and find it more funny than anything else just keep it cool. And if it was completely accidental then they'll most likely take it as such - it's probably just the way you said it that made the atmosphere entirely "awkward" as you said.

I have quite a few gay friends and I come up with jokes about their sexual nature, they don't really care and most of the time it's a massive laugh and I get a good old punch on the arm for it.

Really is quite simple when you put your head to it.

Edit: Also, the original question, "How to address them in public?" Just by their names, nickname, their mother's maiden name, their Klingon name - who cares?! Thought I'd think that openly coming out with something that might be coming off as harsh to their sexual nature may be a rewarding punch to the face. Just be careful when you talk if you tend to blag!
