I would like to know a lot more about that happened in China! Unfortunately, little reliable history actually exists... well, relative to the very readable history available on the rest of WW2. The Chinese have successfully cloaked so much of what happened, and flatly lied about the rest (i think).

Today, more than ever, we are getting a more clear history of WW2 because of the de-classification of so many documents by many gov'ts. I can't wait until we get some definitive research published about the mainland war in China. Simply brutal, I imagine, on the scale of the Eastern Front.

I recall reading Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. Poor Dresden... well now we know a lot more about what happened in that city when it was firebombed. But my niece, a highschool senior, is reading that novel in AP Literature, and it is doubtful whether her teacher will come fourth with the facts that Vonnegut so clearly got wrong.

 

what are you stupid? we were NOT losing the war against japan. we defeated the japanese, island by island through the whole pacific theater, destroyed their navy, killed the mother fucker that was in charge of the pearl harbor attacks, and had them back peddling all the way back to japan, all before we even dropped the a-bombs.

 

correction - it wasn't the chinese covering up the nanking massacre, it was japanese covering it up to hide the genocide they committed. they used the cover up to spread propaganda.

 

True. But remember a lot of journalists were actually in Nanking when the Japs arrived. That bloodbath was reported in a timely and world-eye-opening way as it was actually occuring. It would make for a difficult cover-up. The butchering ways of the Japanese army directly led to U.S. led embargoes on the Japanese.

 

yes, they were there, but the japanese confiscated almost all of the their footage, photos, and reports. that is why there is so little hard proof.

 

The little that I know is mostly from movies or what I've read from some missionaries, if I'm recalling correctly.

I just read about that today. It was given as a reason why Japan attacked Pearl Harbor because we were blockading supplies going to Japan and they only had about six months' of fuel left.

While on a business trip, Tsutomu Yamaguchi was 3km from the blast in hiroshima, and got some bad burns. He went home to nagasaki to stay with some family, whom he was searching for when - you guessed it - the second bomb detonated, burning him some more! Is that lucky or unlucky? He died of stomach cancer at the age of 93 in 2010.

 

I read about him in an article on Cracked.com!

 

He probably would've lived to the ripe old age of 113 without being exposed to both!!!

After my father was declared "Essential personnel" and served in Japan after the war in 1945 and 1946, he was told by the Japanese civilians that they were told to fight to the death should the Americans invade the Japanese mainland.

During the Rape of Nanking, when the Japanese gang raped pregnant women, then tore the fetus' out of their wombs before they murdered the women with bayonets. The Japanese killed 300,000 of the 600,000 people in Nanking, Kimiko. Care to defend that?

Tell me all about the terror inflicted upon the people of Japan.
What the Japanese civilians experienced in WWII is NOTHING compared to the torture and suffering the Japanese cheerfully inflicted upon helpless civilians and POWs under their control.

Anytime you want to discuss the terror inflicted upon the Korean people during the occupation by the Japanese from 1910 to 1945, we can discuss that too. The Koreans want to discuss it with Japan right now. You know, all the Korean women deemed "comfort women" who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese during WWII.

Given the slaughter that would have occurred had Japan not surrendered, it is a reasonable price to pay.

Not so, terrorism by definition is a tactic of the foes of government. Not the government itself. The United State DoD defines terrorism as: "the calculated use of unlawful violence or the threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious or ideological."

The key being that the A-bombs used in WWII by the US have never been considered to be unlawful by any sanctioned legal body. They were overt acts of war.

Saudi Arabians did what Irish Americans did or Jewish American are doing, they gave monetary support to the terrorist organizations. Who benefited by the Blitzkrieg? Who benefited from the bombing of Dresden? Was the firebombing of Tokyo effective? Are nuclear weapons still seen as a deterrent to world war?

Whether you forgetting about the senseless barbarianism of the Japanese in the Pacific Rim during the run up to WWII or that which was exhibited on Bataan or other occupied territories, you continue to ignore the situation of the times.

The A-bombing of Japanese cities worked, the war ended very quickly thereafter. There is absolutely no doubt that the war would have been brought to the Japanese mainland if it had not ended. There is also very little doubt that the casualties, military and civilian would have been greater.

What strikes me, after reading all this, is that while everyone generally has a good grasp of history, it gets changed based on individual belief and the point to be made at the moment.

Which of course leads to the old adage, whoever wins writes the history.........or some such..........which then leads to the question;
So, what would history say of WWII if the Axis had won?
and
How accurate is the history we have since the allies won?

But whatever. I'm glad I don't have to speak Japanese or German, or for that matter, that I don't have to beat my wife or wear a turban..........

I don't think many people know this, but after 9/11 we decided most of the financing for 9/11 came from fewer than a dozen Arabian princes. Within a year, all of them died; some mysteriously, some of heart attack or stroke, but all under questionable circumstances. IF we had a hand in that I would have been standing in Congress saying "These are the evil people who financed 9/11. I'm sending Marines to put their size 13 boots on their necks and I'm ordering them to STEP DOWN WITH AUTHORITY. None of this covert sneaky stuff.
