I think you did the right thing to not sink down to her level. You explained the situation to her, and her reaction was to further insult you. That's on her, not on you.

If somebody has a problem with you, that's exactly what it is - THEIR problem. Don't let this get you down. You're doing an amazing job as a mother of an autistic child. Her kid probably got pregnant at sixteen and don't know who the father is. Trailer trash has nothing to do with where somebody lives or how much money they have. It's a mindset and an attitude.

The only thing she did was prove that she doesn't have enough class to fill a thimble.

You were totally appropriate in your response to somebody who was actively drawing attention to one who cannot help certain characteristics in their actions and behaviors.
You were also totally correct in drawing the comparison in ages.

The fact that the person you were talking to could not differentiate between the ages to which you were referring (your son's -vs.- hers) and instead focused on your age indicates HER lack of comprehension. Sadly, this only compounds her rudeness.

The only safe course of action at that point is to back out of any confrontation as they will only drag the fine, upstanding citizen down to their level.

Thank you to everyone for the support and the kind thoughts. I know I am overly sensitive sometimes, but other times I just can't keep quiet.

Today has been a better day. The Seatle Seahawks embarrassed Peyton Manning, whom I can't stand, in the Super Bowl. As welll as a neighbor whom I have had unpleasant dealings with in the past, she has a "yippie" dog who she leaves outside all the time. Well, she came over out of the blue and apologised for all her bad behaviors and promised to be more considerate about the noise her dog makes.

So there are some good people out there, I just wish there were more of them.

On a slightly related topic:

I found a list of the top ten most absurd majors. This was one I really thought was funny. Maybe since I have never heard of the University, not a lot of kids are taking this course.

And meanwhile, back in Sunny, economically freed South Africa, I was thrown with a beer bottle on my way to work this morning. That's after I dodged some burning tires and before I arrived at school to find half my class is absent. Again.

There are riots in my home town that's been going on since Thursday. The townships around are protesting bad service delivery, the fact that there's been no water or electricity (the concpet of 'paying for those services' is of course foreign to them) and it's become quite a bit of a problem for us.

In other news, a toddler drowned when he fell in a pit toilet at a school in Limpopo, a three-year old girl was found raped and strangled and a Free State family was murdered in a farm attack.

But come election day, and we'll all vote for the ANC again, since they promise us houses and free t-shirts with Nelson Mandela's face on it.

 

Sounds like the elections here.

I guess going outside your house is like playing with fire, unfortunately literally and figuratively.

I am so sad to hear about the riots, and other atrocities. What humans are capable of doing to one another, it's disgusting.

I wish I could say with any certainty that "it will get better".
