A number of Arab countries were part of European empires for awhile. Were those Arab countries more humane before their conquests by European countries?

Did European empires cause African Muslims to practice female genital mutilation?

My answer to both of those questions is, "No."

The Arab slave trade existed for centuries before the European slave trade. It continued for decades later until it was smashed by European military action. Arabs usually castrated male slaves. In addition to castrating black slaves they often cut their penises off. Many died as a result. I do not believe that practice can be blamed on European colonialism or American imperialism.

Oh dear, not this drivel again. Let us attempt to equivocate polar opposites, simply because acknowledging European culture might be in any way "superior" does not agree with our modern practice of white guilt. And how do we do this? Oh, easily of course. We just point to any savagery in the middle east, africa, or south america, and blame "white colonialism."

It is a fail proof plan! Until one realizes that Africa was the most savage continent in the world before whites ever touched its shores. Would you like your Heart of Small Girl cooked rare or medium rare? And South America? Those poor folk were merely carving stone calendars when, suddenly! the Spanish appear and make them savage! All these rumors about child sacrifice, tribal genocide, slavery, and cannibalism before the whites ever arrived, were no doubt created by those same evil whites! Time machines? Oh, I think so. The Middle East has always been a fanciful wonderland. It is now, and always has been the most war-torn country on earth. It has always, and does now, think very highly of women. A highlight in its career was perhaps when Muhammad "converted"" Muslims by giving them the always tart choice between conversion or beheading. Exactly the way Jesus spread Christianity.

Where does one get this mad idea that all these places would be sprawling metropolises of human rights and high-tolerance if the whites had never showed up? These places were savage and cruel before whites arrived, and they remain savage and cruel long after they have left. In point of fact, most of the more "civilized" portions of Africa are those which were under white rule the longest. A great many Africans insist that had whites stayed longer in large numbers, their countries would be in a better place. A simple glance at history and I am inclined to agree with them. One thing is for certain: We couldn't have made it any worse. Open a history book, my dear.

As a side note: The west and the east have NEVER had the same views on women and never will. Your sloppy comparison and insistence that, "hey, not long ago, we had it just as bad!" is a vain insult to every woman living under eastern terror. Whites were treating women with more respect in ancient Greece than many middle easterners treat them with in the year 2013. Centuries behind, my dear? Your math is a bit off. But hey, you're a feminist, so you have to be a victim. I get it.

 

Ironic that you should attack me for being an agnostic, only to proclaim yourself one as well. Agnosticism and Atheism have become interchangeable -- the difference usually lies in ones approach to the subject. Those who proudly proclaim themselves "atheists" are often loud, militant, and, quite frankly, ignorant. The humor of my statement should be quite apparent. I do not call myself an atheist, because I am ashamed of the behavior of atheists. It has nothing to do with my "beliefs." I'm sorry you could not comprehend such a simple point.

Many leftists blame the West for the evils of the world. Western civilization made the left possible. To the best of my knowledge Karl Marx was never once arrested or even harassed by the police in England when he lived there.

Slavery had existed since recorded history. It ceased to exist in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. In 1807 the British Navy began to suppress the slave trade. To a limited extent slavery continues to exist in Africa.

In a Moslem country Marx would not have found the reading material to do his research. He probably would have been arrested. He may have been executed. Let's not even think about what would have happened to Karl in darkest Africa before it was conquered by European countries.

When Leon Trotsky was expelled from the Soviet Union he made a reasonably good living writing articles for Western journals. Eventually he was assassinated by a Soviet agent in Mexico.
