The rules on giving minors alcohol in Washington are largely the same. The bar is out of the question but parents are allowed to serve their minor children alcohol as long as they are not intoxicated or endangered.

The standards we have for our children are frankly far to lenient. In the early 1900's it was very common for a gentleman...American or European...to carry a small handgun for protection. It was extremely common in fact and sales of pocket revolvers have never been higher.

In 1912 the RMS Titanic stuck an ice berg and sank in the north Atlantic with only enough life boats for about half of the passengers on board. We all know the story of Jack and whats-her-name so I will spare everyone the details and get to the point. Wen the titanic sank, ships stewards who were often in possession of a personal firearm, standing at the lifeboat stations would often remove boys over the age of 12 from the boats...at gunpoint if necessary. They were considered "old enough to die like men." The life boats were reserved for women and children only.

In Jewish tradition, a girl gets her bat mitzvah at the age of twelve. Boys get their bar mitzvah at 13. At this point they are not yet considered adults but are considered to be responsible for their actions and are expected to begin taking on adult responsibilities. Soon after, when they reach their mid teens they are no longer considered children and are expected to be adults.

In American tradition, most children were expected to behave as adults by the time they were in their early teens. In the first thirty five years of the twentieth century, children as young as ten years old were expected to hold full time jobs, often working in foundries, mills, railroads, mines, factories and various other high risk positions to help support their families. The hours could be as high as seventy to eighty hours a week. But then something changed. Labor laws were enacted making it a requirement that no one under a certain age could work full time and that kids under the age of 18 could not be assigned to work that could be considered hazardous. Up to that point the leading cause of death under the age of 18 was industrial mishaps. We began coddling the little darlings and giving them toys and birthday parties with cake and balloons until they were old enough to vote. Now we have a generation of thirty year olds living with mom and dad and playing video games while their sperm counts go down and their muscle mass degrades.

in the US you can join the service only with your parents permission they have to sign the papers.
as for the drinking age being 21 just before I turned 18 the drinking age went up to 21 just over a month after my 18th birthday I was in MCRD San Diego if fill if you can strap on the boots the pack and the weapon you should be able to drink.

Conversely many senior enlisted will tell you that just because soldier is 18 or 20, does not make them mature. Holding a weapon and following orders does not equate to making independently mature decisions. Drinking to inebriation is a young person's sport, an adult learns that drinking in moderation is more enjoyable than suffering the fool of being drunk.

Further a drunken soldier is also a danger to himself, his unit and the innocents that he is too protect.

That all said - I'm a hypocrite. My son is 16 and he knows if he wants a beer or a shot, he may ask for it and I'll likely join him. However to date he has hated the taste of any alcohol he has tried. I'm hoping that will remain true for years to come.

I have an idea about being able to shoot cruise miSsiles (AKA join the military) at 18 but have a beer until 21. If wedon't change the law to allow drinking at 18, we could change it so with a military ID you can drink at 18.

 

By the way, does anyone know why they raised the drinking age? I remember them doing it but am to young to remember why?

 

I joined the Navy at 17. At 18, I was in Subic Bay, Phillipines drinking and buying prostitutes in the bars. When I got back to the states I couldn't buy a beer. I didn't think it was fair back then either. Especially after risking my life in so many brothels.....

 

2 of you guys have good ideas. Drop the beer drinking age to 18 or all military can have a drink with the proper ID shown anywhere they like. I have read where some political people have said we need to lower the drinking age to 18 mainly due to are armed forces personnel.

I agree with your concept of natural selection for the most part. The sticky part is that those younger drunk drivers kill a awful large number of innocent other people. Often people we really want to keep in the gene pool.

If that's what senior enlisted think, they should be refusing to accept applicants who are under 21.

 

There is no drinking age in the UK. There is an age a person has to be to purchase alcohol at a bar, store, or an off-license (18 ). But people of ages 5 and above can drink at a pub, as long as it isn't at the bar (in the bar you must be 18 ), and the alcohol needs to be purchased by an adult (18 ). In restaurants the drinking age for beer or cider is 16, so long as the drink is purchased with a meal.

And people of all ages can drink as long as it is not in a public place. So parties, or even just a sunny afternoon at home, kids can drink, or have a glass of red with their dinner.

 

I was watching the Moto GP in Indianapolis yesterday, and the riders on the podiums were not even allowed to drink the champagne !

Move to the UK, join the army at 16, drive at 17, drink at 18.
So you can legally kill at 16 but if you are a bad shot and can't kill just wait a year and then run them over or wait until you are 18 and then you are able to be a drunk driver and kill.
Although if you are a good shot, pass you driving test (or fail in many cases) and turn 18 you could get drunk, run someone over and if you don't kill them just get out of your car and shoot them. :excited:

I was raised in Cali ,and just 2 years ago I came back to my native land Peru. Here the legal age is 18 to drink. i was so shocked seeing so many youngsters drinking freely. even underage kids. I have seen young military at cantinas near the base I live. and all the little strip clubs. like many brothers before me have said if you're willing to fight for your country and protect it. Who ,what, which, when you drink isn't anyone's business.
