I would bet a person with a really good job, and a long career, would make more in their lifetime.

Yep. But, certainly you aren't suggesting that the NFL owes these people a pension, or financial planning experts?

I mean, they are for the most part college educated, and should be fully capable of managing their own money.

I used to take a bunch of professional football players on river trips. You know, cause they wanted one last "blow out" before training camp started.

Biggest bunch of big kids I've ever dealt with. Try telling a drunk, high, testosterone loaded line backer he has to put on a life jacket or he can't get in your boat. Or that having sprints into a mud flat is probably a good way to, you know, blow out a kneed two weeks before training camp starts.

No sympathy for this bunch. The smart ones do just fine, the dumb ones are..........dumb

The number of NCAA colleges that don't bother to educate the football guys is alarmingly high, and steadily rising. That's a large part of the reason why the ones that don't make it in professional sports - through lack of ability or sheer bad luck - end up in poverty. They have nothing on which to fall back.

 

No, I'm not suggesting these guys are OWED anything, but as Heyesey said, these guys are not learning anything in college. Some, maybe most are given courses that are guaranteed to keep their GPA high enough to be eligible, not to teach them anything.

Yes, I think the NFL, in fact all professional sports, should have mandated financial planners. These guys have never seen the huge amounts of money they suddenly find themselves with, and no skills with which to handle it.
