They were right to be afraid, weren't they? The average temperature has been consistently rising for over half a century, to the point where a normal summer is now almost as warm as the freakishly hot, El Nino-affected summer of 1998 ... and look what happens. Everyone ignores the mountains of evidence, looks at one figure without bothering to read the context, and says "oh, we haven't broken the record yet, so global warming is a myth." The idiots denying climate change spend half their time telling us about things which prove the earth is warming up, and saying it's evidence that it is cooling down. How in God's name can you expect them to understand long-term average temperature trends?

I allowed this thread to die because there wasn't anything very new to report. The Obama carbon announcement is both BIG and comparatively NEW.

By frequently starting new threads upon the issuance of a new announcement on various subjects, you automatically eliminate any past counter argument. It's a type of shell game.

Same game that many of them play. They are soundly rebutted, and they disappear. Then, when they find some out of context snippet or piece of propaganda that affirms their beliefs, they start a new thread.

This is the guy who claims that climatologists have produced only a handful of scholarly papers with a contrarian viewpoint. That assertion is patently absurd, but when he is shown that it is absurd, he disappears, moves onto something else, and waits for the dust to settle in the hopes that we'll forget all the rebuttals.

Fine. Lets start with the premise that Humans are slowly cooking themselves by dumping tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Give me a plan. A workable plan, that will stop it.
1) Stop all the cars from emitting CO2. Everywhere. Doesn't work if we just get the US and Europe to do it if China and Russia and South American and Africa won't join the effort.
2) All the trucks, and trains, and manufacturing that pump CO2 into the atmosphere.
3) Every plane.

Show me a workable plan.

The scientific consensus is displayed on the FIRST PAGE of this thread. PetCock said something once about a study that disagreed with the study shown here, but the anti AGW study is very probably bogus.

 

This is exactly why I have problems with your method of argument. My position on climate change has been well documented in the threads that you chose to ignore, so you to come to the table unprepared for meaningful discussion. You should spend a little time actually listening to what people say, before you speak. As my father used to say "If the good Lord intended you to talk twice as much as you listen, He'd have given you two mouths and one ear".


But in a nutshell, I believe that the science on climate change is correct and while it is a naturally occurring phenomenon, man's carelessness has exacerbated the problem. Carbon emissions from man's activities are way too high and have been for centuries, work to contain them should be ongoing.

Now this is where I'll differ with conventional "Green" thinking and politics. To expect some of the world's inhabitants to contain their carbon emissions at the expense of their livelihood, while the greatest emitters are given a pass and actually increase their output beyond the others reductions, makes very little sense.

We are in this pickle because of our quest for creature comforts, we waste enormous amounts of energy on foolishness, heating and cooling vast amounts of empty, unoccupied space. Malls, public buildings, homes, sporting venues, etc. are routinely kept at temperatures that are way out of the zone of acceptability. Each day, hundreds of millions people travel in vehicles that are exceptionally wasteful in the task of people moving, and do it with one person occupying a vehicle that could transport six comfortably. We also waste energy due to indifference to the problem, public housing and other buildings with multi-family living, have no proper way to control the use of HVAC, windows are opened to cool rooms in the winter and warm them in the summer when the HVAC systems over produce.

But my main focus is on the folly of thinking that we are the masters of our environment, we charge blindly down alleys only to find that we took the wrong one because our politicians had an agenda, wasted revenues and lack of results are simply swept away. In the mean time, far more serious threats to our environment get lip service, clean water, clean air, unpolluted soil, etc., are all victims of man's unbridled wantonness with creature comforts and trinkets. Our seas are polluted, because our lakes and streams are polluted, not by carbon, but by chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Species are disappearing because of genetic mutation due to the pollutants, yet we are more concerned with the prospect that the oceans may rise an inch or two, we can move inland to higher ground, the creatures of the sea cannot move to cleaner water.

Yes I am up to my neck in the bullshit that your "green" friends spew about climate change and what we have to do to reverse it. Face it, as long as you and your friends choose to point the finger at the very nation that actually has reduced it's footprint while the real culprits are excused, you will effect no change whatsoever.
