I had a some what similar experience to yours jimfox . A few years back during mothers day I thought I would do somthing nice. We had a secretary working in our main office. She was a large bitter woman but did a good job and I always went out of my way to be nice to her. I knew she was a mother of two ( she always complained about her boys ) and she was divorced. Knowing her kids would not do anything for mothers day I thought I would pick her up a card and a box of chocolates. You know try to brighten her day. Well as I mentioned she is a very large woman. When I presented my gifts she became very upset, she asked me if I bought her candy because she is fat and then informed me she was on a diet and threw the items back at me. I had no intention of insulting her I thought I was being nice. I guess I learned my lesson.

I think we have another reason to open doors for women. It pisses off the extreme wimmins libbers. That alone should make your day.

Of course you hold the door. Not just for women, but for anyone approaching the door as you go through it. It's polite, friendly and helpful. People who don't appreciate the effort should be shot.

 

I second what Orion says...except the "should be shot" part...that would be for more serious infractions.

 

Well, I LOVE it when someone holds a door open for me. And I'm sure to let them know with a big smile and a "thank you."

Of course, I know they only reason they're doing it is so they can check out my ass.

and if I didn't mention this before Texas men are EXPECTED to always hold the door for a lady, even if she looks like a cowboy.

 

I've been opening doors for women since I was strong enough to push them open. I'll continue to do it and I'll raise any son I have to do the same. Women who feel threatened or offended by such signs of courtesy I will just pity and shun.

Like everybody said, what's wrong with opening the door. I was taught to do that as it is simple matters. Most people say thank you and little children tend to have a beaming smile that melts your heart when you open a door for them (just make sure their parent is there and actually going in the same direction).

 

I hold the door for anyone that's behind me, it's just common courtesy, as most have said.

And I hate when people I hold the door for don't say thanks.

I've actually told people a time or two "Hey, I don't get paid to hold the fucking door, the LEAST you could do is say 'thanks', I mean is it so damn hard?" then walk off.

It's actually how me and one of my (Then GF) ex's started talking...go figure.

Sometimes though, for the people don't even give a simple 'thanks' I wish I could just grab their hair, snatch em' back out the door, and say "Ok, let's try this again, I hold the door for you,and then you say?...." "thank you...." "Very good, have a nice day!"

 

I don't open if the one c'min on has bigger ass than the door. I just stand and wish she put her ass on my lap hehehe

 

my husband not only holds doors open for me he will open the car door and pull out a chair when i sit down. to him, he is just being polite, he does it for all ladies. and he is teaching our sons the same manners. if fact when we are out and about i have to go looking for my oldest son because he is being a door man for just about everybody.....i wish all people thought this way......manners seem to be a thing of the past....

 

You may not believe this, but in general people in Las Vegas (except the NY tourists) are usually very polite. They nearly always hold the door or the elevator for someone coming through, and nearly always say thank you.

I don't know what there is about NY that makes people from there tending to be nastier to others. (Hey you know what I mean , not sexually)

 

I always hold the door for people, regardless of age or sex. They usually say 'thank you', but I just shrug off the ones who don't, as they are in the minority.

I've never been abused for doing it, but if I were, I would probably just say "Suit yourself".

 

opening doors is indeed just a nice polite and courteous thing to do, i do it most of the the time (depends if I'm in a hurry or not) however i do it all the time for anyone in halls, and because of my attire i have gotten some rather peculiar looks, but no-one has ever been abusive and those that simply ignore me it's fine i just listen to my music and move on knowing that my Karma has been enlightened slightly.

People don't surprise me

Anymore today what people do, say and think never surprise me. I think it is so funny that the nicer you are the ruder people are. There are lots of people that take things for granted in life and think the world revolves around them. If someone is nice enough to share a kind word with me or let me drive out first or open the door for me that makes my day because I would do the same.
