WASHINGTON — A Russian billionaire stayed one step ahead of the White House by unloading his holdings in a major trading firm just a day before the Obama administration announced sanctions against him.

Billionaire Gennady Timchenko, listed by Forbes as Russia’s sixth-richest man, sold his 43 percent stake in Gunvor, the Geneva-based commodities trading company, to his Swedish partner Torbjorn Tornqvist on Wednesday, the company has announced.

On Thursday, President Barack Obama announced that Timchenko was among 20 officials close to Russian President Vladimir Putin being blacklisted by the US.

But there were strong hints of what was coming as top US officials including Vice President Joe Biden said the White House was prepared to impose further punishments if Putin continued his annexation of Crimea.

The price of Gunvor’s bond took a dive Friday, with the yield rising to 10.4 percent Friday from 7.4 percent on Thursday.

 

These sanctions will hurt Russia, the EU, the US and any other investors in effected companies such as Gunver. But it's the only option obama has. Damaging business activity is the only thing obama knows how to do. It's what he's always done. It's what he's been doing since his days as a community organizer.

No. But not US. Admins trying it ni Iraq, Lybia, Georgia, Syria (yes, Syria), now Ukraine. NATO's ballistic missile (US National Missile Defense or European Interceptor Site) r on Atlantic Coast, in Czech Republic, Poland, Alaska, Japan, Denmark... here we have the covers to make a ballistic circle for Russia. Remember, when you pokes your nose into Ukrainian business, russians have families in Crimea and Ukraine, which were included in USSR. Thanks to Gorbachev, who disorganized whole country, and Eltsin who watered its parts with vodka. The older generation of russians have families and relatives in Crimea and Ukraine, so do Ukrainians in Russia. They are like one country. Just imagine if somebody have mom and dad in DC and someone came to take it with promises "go to our side and u will be better", what will u do? You just have to take up arms and go to war for your family. Thanks God now it doesnt. Remember, Crimeans, Ukrainians and Russians allway were brotherly people, who fighted together side by side!

Yes, i am the russian. I have at least 5 person of my family in Ukraine and 2 in Crimea. I have a lot of friends there. And all of them understand, that NATO (the whole europe) wants to bump heads of brotherly people. And here is no mater, which politics is right. They want me to hate my family in Ukraine, equivalent to kill them by bringing them to another country (in the person of western Ukraine, u know what it means).

All u know, that there were a lot of acts of vandalism with Lenin's sculpture. We wached the news with it, over 90 sculptures were destroyed in the name of imaginary truth. Do u know, who influenced the circumstances under which the territory of Ukraine has become such a big, strong and powerful? Lenin! Ukraine is under Lenin received the status of a powerful state. Now we have a groupe of people who r the traitors.

Who r agressor? Really Putin, who defends the interests of Russian in Crimea? Really Putin, who don't want to have overt nuclear threat from the "friendly" state?

We had no problems until it was a war threat. Do u know how a bear lead himself in ambush?

So, as russian population we have a real problem, that overlaps others: we have caucasian intervention (just like barbarian invasion). We have so much troubles with caucasians (not civilized, wild apes, just arived from mountains and imagine themselves kings), that troubles with other countries just like a flower. More apes - more crime, more assaulted russian women, more not honest fight with stabbings, more crime and lawlessness. There are no problems for russians, except caucasians and Middle Easterners.

In fact, we have no problems with alcohol. At least as it seems. More problematic with alcohol even Chezh or Polands, than Russians. We have high cultural level. In Russia and Ukraine alcohol problem is not hotter than in other countries. Nowadays we even dont have smoking problem. If 15-20 years ago it was so, nowadays we have 1 (maximum 2) smoking individuals of the 10 who do not smoke. Average weight for russian girls 25-30 y.o. is near 50kg (110lb) with growth near 5.75ft. We live till 70 and more. Families have at least one child. Good job. Rests in europe. We all do not have such problems, as u can imagine.

U, as competing society, have "right" information - just as your masters in government wish. So do we. But it is not so in real. We must have our own head to think properly and separate the necessary from the unnecessary, isn't it?

So, mr. CS natureboy, with all respect, u r not right about "fetal alcohol syndrome kids" and something like this. Do u know, how many outcast kids from Poland, Kazakhstan or ever France have russian families? It's all special cases that are not related to statistics. Yes, we have orphanages, and i dont know any case when the children live on the streets in cardboard boxes. All orphanages are donated, supported by the government. Children there not happy, but not hungry and live in warm.

 

By the way, when i was in secondary school in the ninth grade (we have 11, than 5 years univercity - it is a minimum or standart for all), i have signs quadratic polynomial, degree with rational exponent, exponential and logarithmic functions in math, or for example introduction to quantum physics or geometrical optics in physics lessons. Its a minimum for all children.

And u say "fetal alcohol syndrome kids"....

Excuse me, if u will speak english it will be more clear for me. U just said something like "i never speak, that all russian children not by alcohol children") does it mean that u never said that russian children are alcoholics?? I just want to say that we have no any hot social problems with fetal alcohol syndrome or some effects that could have an impact on children's health.

And i dont know any case when orphanage got rid of the child passed him to american parents. But i know a lot of cases, when americans voluntarily took the child, and the child returned to the orphanage beaten or injured because of not adequate attitude to children in general. but this is a special case.

While the West keeps talking of "costs" for Russia — whether they be economic or social-freedom — it appears one company is benefiting from the post-sanctions period. OAO Moscow Exchange, the Russian stock exchange, is up 40% from Match 13th lows just before voters in Crimea voted to join Russia. As Bloomberg reports, daily equity trading volumes at the exchange surged to a record 72 billion rubles ($2 billion) in the first three weeks of March, compared with an average of 35 billion in February, the bourse said yesterday, as the exchange is "clearly benefiting from the current volatile environment."
