Odd as it may sound, for the first 30 years of my life I had absolutely no concept of Christmas. At best when young a couple of times the church ladies would steal me away from my father to take the heathen child to a Christmas Eve service, that being their good deed for the year. The remainder of those years were spent round the world in different countries and among different cultures none of it under the best circumstances, so Christmas remained something I was simply ignorant to.

Once I had returned to the U.S. however, Christmas or at least the commercialized aspect became something of curiosity to me. What confused me most though was this guy Santa Clause. I never quite understood why the other gals I worked with would swarm over and maul any goofy huge guy in a red suit who kept insulting all of us over and over. In any case at 30 upon meeting my husband what Christmas was really about was explained to me. The religious aspect to understand it, traditional bits like food, customs and decorations leaving me wide eyed. Naturally the good cheer surprising me as even the most sour of people would become friendly and joyous.
