    This is an understandable fear, however moving and thinking also consume calories, and are healthful and useful enjoyable activities, and we require nutrients to do these, so it is good to eat. Sometimes a lot of good food is more satisfying than 'hardly' bad anyway.

    I think nazi comparisons would be far more off base than this. I do agree: 'greed' is the wrong term. Traditionally we use that to refer to material assets. To refer to eating, it is called gluttony. It is rather separate, because rather than hording things around us, we hord things IN us. It is an indulgence of the senses, of taste and smell and fullness, just as greed is of the touch and the sight and the sounds, and lust is to the touch and the... okay there's a lot of sensual overlap, but they definately fill different niches.

    I am personally quite gluttonous at times. I like to feast and gorge, 'binge' if you will, upon tasteful things. This is a normal mechanism. There are problems when this gets out of control though, like when this is done without awesome explosive physical actions which combust the calories.

    How suddenly do you believe this occurs? Thyroid conditions are certainly a reality. They alter how energetic you feel, they make it difficult to do things, because you feel tired, and the muscles do not feel energized, because energy is being stored in hard to get to places (lipid cells) rather than easy to get to places (glycogen chains in the muscle and liver). Even so, it really is not a 'sudden' thing. The calories do need to be consumed to be included in the body, it's basic math/thermodynamics here.

    I won't apply the term 'greedy', as above I think it's the wrong term. Being gluttonous is definately something I can more strongly empathize with here, it fulfills a more primal need for survival encoded into our impulses, compared to 'greed' which is not as primal, it is a more complex higher desire based upon wanting shelter, shiny baubles, etc. It's wrong to use the same term for such fundamentally different things.

    That said, NOBODY does 'everything' possible for them to do. Seriously, nobody. Everything possible? Do you know how many things that is? Far more than anyone can keep track of. Furthermore, it's not merely a numerical quantity, but it is a quality of effort put into the various possible things which matters just as much. Even doing 1 thing with a great deal of dedication can create much greater results than if you were to hypothetically do every single thing, without that much effort.

    Parents feeding fast food suck. That sounds like it's over with, so let's put it behind. I'd really like to hear why fast food would slow the metabolism, because there are lots of people with fast metabolisms who burn right through it. I think it is more a factor of this: fast food is high calorie, and not very healthful. You feel sluggish because you lack vitamins, and because of gaining pounds from the excess calories. Sluggishness means less movement, so the muscles atrophy, and together that lowers the metabolism, which of course spirals into further fat gain from further feelings of apathy. I know because I've felt that before, it's something we on some level go through hills of throughout all out lives, just at different altitudes and changes in elevation.

    As a matter of pure energy principles, there are movements which require muscles to do, and in doing them, those muscles consume energy. Data on this would be useful in assessing the input and output here.

    Walking is great exercise! It's good you're doing that, it's a skill that you must master to lead up to running eventually, which is a good skill to regain. Your doctor is correct though, ease into it and don't overdo things. A bicycle could work... to be honest though, I've always found those incredibly uncomfortable. They always dig into your coccyx! Even with padded gel, bah... chafing, a limited range of motion, sitting... they just don't feel too elegant or anything.

    Since walking is aggravating your ankles, it may be useful to try exercises where your feet remain planted. Shifting from foot to foot, even in an activity like walking, can cause a lot of joint-aggravating impacts when you are not used to properly cushioning your steps using your ankle musculature properly. Steadying yourself against a wall or stair bannister, I think you should work with calf raises, to build muscle in that area. There are also wall sits, and partial range squats, to build the leg musculature without the impacts. This alone will be great work for the body to keep up since the added fat is like doing it with a weighted vest or barbell on. Since you have a lot of fuel, you can focus more on higher repetitions so that your aerobic fuel system can rev up and use these reserves.

    You gotta realize, the legs are only one part of the body, there's other stuff. You need to work around your weak points while you rehab them. The more muscles in the body working, the less likely you are to injure yourself. With the aforementioned wall, you can work on the chest and triceps pushing yourself off it, until you're able to comfortable get on the ground and do 'girly' pushups which you do with knees on a cushion. I think very high repeitions of this would be good, or you can move to strength if you desire that, but at this point I think even bodyweight would feel like strength, so you can move from strength>hypertrophy>aerobic by increasing the numbers.

    In addition to squats, you can work the posterior muscles by bending over at the waist and keeping your back extended with proper curve ('straight' but more like 'neutral', do not flex the spine). You can mimic a deadlift by pretending to pick something heavy off the ground, and even move up to picking something off if you have it. I do this all the time without weight, you're still lifting your torso/head/arms which is over half your bodyweight so the muscles are stimulated even by this. It will create a feeling of limberness!

    The lat pulldown I mentioned reduces pressure on the spine, this makes it easier to walk, and lat strength will eventually useful some day in the future when you run again because it helps to stabilize the lower back by cooperating with your opposite glute. It is a good idea to get access to something like this. If you can't get a gym then bands over a chin bar work.

    I recommend getting a chin bar, put a scale beneath it, stand on the scale, and pull. The amount of weight the scale decreases by is how hard you're pulling. This is a light isometric workout which I think can work up progressively until you can hang your entire weight by your arms. This is an awesome upper body movement, probably even more hardcore for it than the bench press.

    Once strong, you can step up onto a chair to get to the top, and then lower yourself using arms, that's an 'eccentric'. When you work on pausing midway, that's an isometric too. Eventually this builds the power to pull to the top from the bottom, the 'concentric'.

    Once you are able to do this, I think you will be at a much healthier weight, it will just happen out of necessity, you may even be able to add some eventually. When I got a bar, I went from 225>175 playing on it, and not even very well actually, I think I can only do 7 chins continuously, but the point is, you make it your friend, and touch that bar every time you walk through the door. When you answer the phone, get a snack, etc. Make the bar your friend, and your lover, and grip it for dear life! Get a shiny red foam one from Bally or something like mine, it's sexy.

    Also, for legs, do things like leg lifts, bridging, balancing (have a wall on either side so you don't fall) and work on shifting weight, splaying the legs apart in forward and side lunges/split squats, but very gradually, like don't actually take a big step because that's an impact harder than walking, more like gradually just 'walk' the foot out by turning it on the heel and ball. Horse stance is awesome for the adductors. Raising leg out to the side is great for abductors.

    Hi Xan, glad you got to post. Sorry I missed it by some days. Got a job starting March 30 with the Census Bureau. Hope I can make my sleep patterns let me do a 40hr wk job.

    Also finished two smog tech schools and need a hands on but my census job is going to keep from working at smog. I have to find out how long my school is good for. I also wanted to start teaching one of the classes.
