I know what my vagina is like wet versus dry. If I was going into labor, I hope it'd be like the aroused kind of wet, since it'd be stretchier then, and less irritable, as well as slick. So this strange question.
No valid studies for this that I've seen.

 

Hm... I would think that maybe the amniotic fluid that leaks out when the water breaks might provide some degree of lubrication. I'm not actually sure if there is any kind of extra lubrication. I've never read about any secretions as part of the birthing process.

I've heard of veterinarians using a 'birthing liquid' or something that's made from water and seaweed. It's extremely slippery and doesn't dry out easily. I guess they use it for large animals on the farm or something? I don't know.

 

There are lots of fluids and stress to the mother's body during childbirth.

I'm a horny sucker than can find sexual arousal in damn-near any situation, but in childbirth, the woman is almost fighting for her life and the life of her baby. This is one situation in which I can't find anything remotely arousing.

I have pre-med experience with witnessing births and then with the births of my own four children. I didn't notice the kind of vaginal moisture related to sexual arousal during childbirth. I have been acquainted with women that were extremely horny during pregnancy, but in childbirth, there was nothing arousing happening.

 

I don't know of the vagina getting lubricated during childbirth. No medical source has ever described that. But I suspect the infant does not spend a lot of time in the vagina. From medical descriptions I have read, it seems to me that the cervix is pushed down the vagina quite a bit, more than half way. That would make lubricating the vagina not very necessary.

But some sort of lubrication is needed. I have seen photos of newborns. They are covered in a thickish gunk that looks like white vaseline and it is the lubricant for passing through the cervix and vagina. I don't know how it is produced.

 

John, I believe you are talking about the "Vernix Caseosa". It's a thick, white, waxy substance produced by the baby's skin near the end of gestation and acts as a protective coating. It's a kind of 'waterproofing' that prevents heat loss after birth.

 

I have no idea how it was but I do know that the labours I had where I was walking about and swaying my hips from side to side went a lot quicker than the traditional on your back approach as gravity helped speed up the birth so less pushing

 

Mine was wet not a sexually arousal type.After 12 hours I just couldn't push my 9 1/2 pound daughter threw there.Had to have a c section.

Tearing because your vagina can't stretch that far is a bigger concern than lubrication.
