Not really NFL news per se but still includes an NFL'er ... could have gone into the MLB thread lol. :D

Rashad Jennings claims 'Dancing with the Stars' win over David Ross
NFL running back Rashad Jennings and partner Emma Slater won the "Dancing with the Stars" finale on Tuesday night, beating former Chicago Cubs catcher and current ESPN analyst David Ross and Lindsay Arnold.

Fifth Harmony singer Normani Kordei and pro dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy finished third in the wrap-up of the show's 24th season.

The 32-year-old Jennings, a free agent, spent the previous three seasons with the New York Giants.

The winner was chosen based on viewer votes and judges' points from last week and Monday, combined with judges' points from Tuesday night's 24-hour challenge.

Jennings later tweeted that he never would have imagined he'd appear on the show, let alone win the whole thing. Ross wrote that he "couldn't be happier" for Jennings and Slater.

Jennings follows in the footsteps of previous DWTS winners who played in the NFL: Emmitt Smith, Hines Ward and Donald Driver. Also in past seasons, Jerry Rice finished second, Calvin Johnson took third and Lawrence Taylor placed seventh.

At Wrigley Field on Tuesday night, not long after the Cubs' victory, players gathered around clubhouse TVs waiting for the DWTS winner to be announced.

Ross has taken some ribbing for participating on the program, and as the final commercials aired, the locker room mindset had changed little, if at all. Even Ross' close friend Jon Lester -- who had just pitched a complete game -- couldn't help himself.

"I'm surprised he's made it this far," Lester quipped. "I told him to take a fall in the first couple [of weeks] and pull a hammy."

But like all of Ross' former teammates, Lester was pulling for him. Slugger Kyle Schwarber even took a break from a postgame interview session to listen in for the winning couple.

After Ross survived the third-place announcement, these Cubs were sure he would be named the winner. But unlike in the final game of his MLB career -- Game 7 of the World Series in November -- Ross finished in second place.

Ross, who also played for six other MLB teams and was the first baseball player to appear on DWTS, was seen as a long shot to get to the finals. But he was a favorite with the fans, and he even won over the judges with his hard work and positive attitude.

On Monday, Ross said, "Just being in the finals, one, is way more than I ever expected, and the fact that I've got support from so many great people, and that they look up to me and watch this show and support me, just ... I don't even have the words, just a lot of thanks."

I would have paid good money to be in the Cubs Clubhouse to see a bunch of baseball players anxiously gathered around the big screen to cheer on their guy in that competition ... DWTS is a phenomenon for sure with some.

On a football note, the CFL is set to kick off the 2017 season and training camp is close in the NFL as they go through the pre-season rituals ...

He has some of the best stats in football as far as passing yards, completion percentage and TD/INT ratio and would normally be a boon to ANY team BUT he has an attitude that no one wants ...

As a backup, this is what you would get:

He'll fit right in with that arrogant bunch.

Being that good does tend to accent arrogance but they went another route and picked up a different backup QB instead of Colin.

Stamps the favourites to lead CFL in wins

Bo Levi Mitchell , The Canadian Press

The Calgary Stampeders may have lost to the Ottawa Redblacks in heartbreaking fashion in last year's Grey Cup, but that hasn't stopped them from being the odds-on favourites to lead the CFL in regular season wins this season.

According to BoDog, the Stamps over/under win total for the 2017 season is 12.5. They are followed by the BC Lions at 11 and the Edmonton Eskimos at 10. The defending champion Redblacks sit at a 9.5 win total while the Saskatchewan Roughriders round out the league at 7.5

Check out the complete list below.

    Stampeders - 12.5

    Lions - 11

    Eskimos - 10

    Redblacks - 9.5

    Tiger-Cats - 8.5

    Alouettes - 8.5

    Argonauts - 8.5

    Blue Bombers - 8

    Roughriders - 7.5

Calgary finished with the most victories last year with 15 while Saskatchewan and Toronto were tied for last with five apiece.

BoDog also favours the Stampeders to win the Grey Cup this year.

Week 1 starts tomorrow, and away we go !!! The Blue Bombers have a week 1 bye.

U.S. Supreme Court rules that free speech trumps ban of offensive names
    [IMG]
Washington's football team is free to use the name even without trademark protection. (The Associated Press)

The Supreme Court on Monday struck down part of a law that bans offensive trademarks in a ruling that is expected to help the Washington Redskins in their legal fight over the team name.

The justices ruled that the 71-year-old trademark law barring disparaging terms infringes free speech rights.

The ruling is a victory for the Asian-American rock band called the Slants, but the case was closely watched for the impact it would have on the separate dispute involving the Washington football team.

Slants founder Simon Tam tried to trademark the band name in 2011, but the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office denied the request on the ground that it disparages Asians. A federal appeals court in Washington later said the law barring offensive trademarks is unconstitutional.

The Redskins made similar arguments after the trademark office ruled in 2014 that the name offends American Indians and canceled the team's trademark. A federal appeals court in Richmond put the team's case on hold while waiting for the Supreme Court to rule in the Slants case.

In his opinion for the court, Justice Samuel Alito rejected arguments that trademarks are government speech, not private speech. Alito also said trademarks are not immune from First Amendment protection as part of a government program or subsidy.

Tam insisted he was not trying to be offensive, but wanted to transform a derisive term into a statement of pride. The Redskins also contend their name honours American Indians, but the team has faced decades of legal challenges from Indian groups that say the name is racist.

Despite intense public pressure to change the name, Redskins owner Dan Snyder has refused, saying it "represents honour, respect and pride."

In the Slants case, government officials argued that the law did not infringe on free speech rights because the band was still free to use the name even without trademark protection. The same is true for the Redskins, but the team did not want to lose the legal protections that go along with a registered trademark. The protections include blocking the sale of counterfeit merchandise and working to pursue a brand development strategy.

A federal appeals court had sided with the Slants in 2015, saying First Amendment protects "even hurtful speech that harms members of oft-stigmatized communities."

I'mDerek Carr, quarterback for the Oakland Raiders signed a five year contract worth 125 million dollars. He's now the highest paid player in the NFL. Im thinking others may want to renegotiate their contracts too.

It is actually a contract extension bro but ya it beats out Andrew Lucks contract but Carr has some pretty good numbers so far (So far, Carr has thrown for 11,194 yards, 81 touchdowns and 31 interceptions in three seasons).

On a quirky note, he was in the final year of his original contract and before this was only expected to make around 1 million dollars as his base salary ...

40 million of this new extension is "guaranteed".

The Raiders need some stability in their dressing room so will help but they have bigger problems with location ...

I remember them as the Oakland Raiders, then the LA Raiders, then back to Oakland again. Now they're moving to Vegas in 2019 or 20. Just think how much the merchandisers make, because the need new stuff each time they move!

Anyway back on track lol, Montreal beat Saskatchewan 17-16 last night to kick off the CFL regular season. My Stamps play the defending Grey Cup champ RedBlacks tonight.

So week one is in the books in the CFL and my Stamps were held to an overtime tie ... yes there are only 9 teams here but that makes the rivalry's that much stronger especially considering that Ontario has 3 of those teams.

Former 49er Colin Kapernack spent the July 4th holiday in his native Ghana. Kapernick remains unsigned by any NFL team following his refusal to kneel during the playing of the national anthem last season.

Word on the street is he may be flipping burgers at Mc Donald's by the start of the NFL season.

He was a flash in the pan and won't be anything but a back-up qb at best. However, he's a pretty rich man, he'll likely be okay.

Yes he cut his own throat but is laughing ALL the way to the bank and most of his massive contract was "guaranteed" so he will NEVER have to work again in this lifetime ...

Maybe Russia could start a football league and would gladly take him lol.

Maybe he can move back to Guyana for good then. Professional sports players need to realize that they are paid to perform, not for their political opinions. They just need to show up, entertain us for two and a half hours, then go home.
