Is that in one race, or the whole competition?.

    1. Trev1
      The whole regatta.

Yanks cheated, of course, they way they always do and rigged the game so they were one up before the finals, allowed themselves two boats, everyone else was only allowed one, and the plucky Kiwis shoved it up them 7 - 1.

So Larry Ellison will be crying in his money vault tonight.

And the humble Kiwis will have a couple of quiet beers. And contemplate Auckland in four years.

Maybe they lost deliberately just so they could get to sail in Auckland....... And then they could have a go in the tough sailor's race,.... The Sydney to Hobart.

    1. Trev1
Yeah, that is one hell of a race. Always enjoy it.

New Zealand won, ultimately, with superior seamanship.

The fastest boat in the field wasn't even Oracle's. That would be the Artemis boat (France), which was eliminated earlier this month.

(The Artemis boat is funded by another billionaire, a dude named Tornqvist who's even richer than Ellison, they say.)

That's what's great about the NZ win. The America's Cup races over the past few rounds have been too much about the technology and these billion dollar boats. NZ's crew beat superior technology with skill and verve.

      Wrong again :)

      Team NZ win with
Superior technology AND , skill and experience.

We've been up with the leaders all the way in modern sailing and technology ,
      and often leading some.
      Still do.
Kiwi are everywhere , quietly , into everything.

including in many of our rivals Americas Cup teams ,
      including another skipper ,
      previous winner ,
and a second kiwi winning Americas cup skipper.
Even the innovative digital display technology is a NZ innovation and development.

About the Only place we're not up with , or ahead of , is budget.
We're way behind when it comes to money available ,
but we produce better for less.

Clarise is correct there, Artemis did have a faster boat. After the 5 day break, Oracles boat was faster than ours most of the time. But watching the VMG, our boat was able to point higher. Significantly so.

It was nice to see the Yanks being so gracious in defeat, bringing a few beers over to our boys and girls. Even the Aussie bugger Spithill was an example of good sportsmanship. He's a great competitor, and like Conner before him, us Kiwis love to hate him. Whereas we more or less just hate Quade Coopers. ;)

The team NZ still has it's full sized replica ,
used for display etc during our last tenure as holders ,
because of its very high value and security risks .

It is sitting locked in a secure cabinet in their club rooms ,
    locked there since 2001 ,
with a Very Expensive bottle of Cognac inside ,
    waiting for the cups return.

    Party coming up :)

Then , the cabinet is all ready to house the Auld Mug securely again.

(I have no idea why they chose Cognac to put away inside it.
perhaps it keeps best , in case it took us a very long time to win back)

Have you even looked at the records from back to the beginning in 1871......

we have only lost about 5 times....

but it is your day to shine......happy for you...

I have been reading the history and it is interesting....

      True ,
you held it for over 120 years ,
then Aussie won , once , but couldn't defend it

Then kiwi took interest and started to participate , 1985.
Kiwi the first to win it and defend it.
      and
now to win it back again.

So only the Aussies and NZ have ever held it ,
      apart from America.

Not bad , in 32 years from first ever involvement.

      We're happy :)

      note:
yes , I have all sorts if books , in all records of the auld mug , inherited.

My Dad was a Navy man WW2 and he had that book.....he loved sailing and we owned some small sailboats...

I sailed for many years and owned up to a 23 footer.....

I also went to a prep school for the Naval Academy....

But I lost interest in sailing sometime back......

    Congrats to the Kiwi 's!

Love sailing, but most Americans aren't even aware it happened.

      No ,
well kiwi have open and free access to the coast and the sea , with a huge long coastline ,
and most live within minutes ,
and all within about an hour from it.

The furthest you can get from the sea in NZ , is a remotish area less than 119.5km from sea. 75 miles

Also , all of our early development , transport and trade was by sea ,
and still the majority of , up to my highschool days ,
so every family had the ocean in their blood/DNA

I have no idea how many boats in NZ , but likely more per capita than any other country.
I walk round my house and I can see
12 , if none out boating , now , winter,
      and more in summer.

Its a small town 3,000 , large estury harbour , a marina, and waterways (still expanding). , all choka with boats ,
and most back yards with at least one

    before someone jumps on me.

I kinda simplified my statement ,
so here's whole the truth :)

    * * *
America's Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport.
America's Cup is the oldest trophy continuously awarded in sport.

The America's Cup is the most famous and most prestigious regatta in the sport of sailing, and the oldest active trophy in international sport, predating the FA Cup by two decades and the Modern Olympics by 45 years. The cup, originally offered as the Royal Yacht Squadron cup, is now named after the first yacht to win the trophy, the schooner America.

The Cup itself is an ornate silver-plated Britannia metal bottomless ewer, crafted in 1848 by Garrard & Co. The regatta's origins date back to August 22, 1851 when the 30.86 m schooner-yacht America, owned by a syndicate that represented the New York Yacht Club, raced 15 yachts representing the Royal Yacht Squadron around the Isle of Wight. America won by 20 minutes.

There is the US Open for people who think hitting a white ball is CHALLENGING. There is Wimbledon for people who think hitting a yellow ball back and forth is CHALLENGING. There are so many "games" people can PLAY at and claim are CHALLENGING. For me, so what, is the only reaction. I have never understood why so many people want to watch professionals spend billions of dollars to prove to themselves who is THE BEST TODAY. I played sports when I was young. I have skydived, bungee jumped, and done many things for the "kick" but WATCH? Why WATCH or even read about someone else doing something for which he/she/they are paid MILLIONS of US dollars? We are a funny group, humans. Our personal achievements aren't enough. We must seek out the BEST and devote hours/days/weeks/months ... endless time to WATCHING them do what we do not as well. I was born and raised in Boston, MA USA where we have THE BOSTON MARATHON every year. I enjoyed the marathon when it was FREE and open to ALL. Now it is a public display of MONEY and ADVERTISING and not worth reading about or watching. I guess we should be proud of the accomplishments of our fellow countrymen but only if our country had some major impact on the fellow countryman. Say for example, I have become a great mathematician and prove some important theoretical formula. What part of my genius is attributable to my being a citizen of the USA? NONE. How about looking at how your country has improved the people of the world and taking pleasure in that accomplishment. In year XXXX people from countries 123X, 908Y and YgYg worked on YACHT LOTS OF FUCKING MONEY, flying the flag of ZxZx country to victory and the people of ZxZx celebrated the accomplishment of their country. Really?

    1. slutwolf
Yep , funny things us humans.
      We enjoy watching all sorts.

Planes flying round big balloons ,
Nazcars , super saloons , and GPs ,
motorbikes on tracks roads and hills,
drones in stadiums and streets ,
hydroplanes , jet boats , offshore power boats and circuit racers ,
and all sorts of sail craft , even at Olympics.

      Some are horrendously expensive ,
and almost none cheap to compete in , but some of us enjoy some of them.

Sailing has probably made the grestest advances in recent years.

Who knew it would be possible to sail at 40 knots in a quarter that wind speed.
(the fastest I've ever sailed on water was about 21 knots , and that was exhilarating back then , and beyond what most knew)

      That's crazy
and it is on the edge.

We were in fact extremely lucky there were no injuries in the accident we did have

Actually, you can do that. Not during a race or practice of course, but you can buy an afternoon ride on one of those things.
Just gonna cost you a lot.
And the ride doesn't include lunch or beer.
Better you should do the Grand Canyon. Lunch and beer included, 14 days (not just one afternoon) and much more thrilling!

      Oh, and congrats New Zealand!
You've proven that being a pompous gas bag with lots of money does not guarantee the win!

    .
I understand what your saying, and it's a fair comment.
There was a race many, many years ago between two fishing schooners, one from America, and one from Canada. In my humble opinion, one of histories greatest races!

I'm not qualified, or have the skills to compete at the caliber required to crew on one of these boats, but it would be a thrill!
Today's Americas Cup isn't unlike some athletes using steroids. I don't follow the Americas cup for that reason. If all the boats were of the same design, and sail plan, with skills being the deciding factor giving a crew the win! I'd follow each, and every race!

Without previous American dominance in certain sports there would be no incentive for other nations to better themselves and create parity or even a changing of the guard as it were . Sometimes winning is not enough but beating the best makes it that much sweeter .
This was a well earned victory for NZ .

America's Cup boats are a basic one design class , with very strict rules around the basics ,
and the parameters within which innovation must fit.

To make them all identical , would be pointless ,
because it would reduce the regatta to just another standard sailing regatta ,
with no room for innovation and improvements ,
within class for each regatta ,
    every four years.

That is , the next regatta boats ,
would have to be built to a strict design of what is known today.
    * *
    see below
    particularly last paragraph

Each team has designed their own America’s Cup Class boat, however there are certain ‘one-design’ elements which are required to be the same across all boats. The other areas where they are allowed to innovate will be the key differentiator between teams.

To give an idea of the technology advances in the America’s Cup in recent years,

between 1851 and 2007 the top speed of the boats increased from about 12 to 18 knots.
Since 2007, the speed has increased from 18 knots to just under 50 knots, so far.

    * * *

There are hundreds of regatta's and yacht races where you can watch and compete in standard conventional yachting.
What would be the point in reducing the Americas Cup to just more of the same ?
That would take away it's difference and uniqueness , and make it pointless.

In reality , the Kiwi's were/are responsible for improving the rules and making them fairer ,
    and ,
Grant Dalton has already stated that he will be doing that again now , for the next regatta.

That is another thing about the America's Cup.
    The winners , holders ,
make the rules , including boat type and design , sailing rules etc.
and where and when the next regatta will be sailed .
As one commentator quipped , the Americans have always skewed the rules , to make it hard to loose the cup ,
rather than hard to win .

    Look at this year.
America rigged it so that they went into the finals with one race point up.
    That is ,
in the finals , the holders only had to win 6 races to retain the cup ,
while the challengers had to win 8.
    1. (first to 7 points wins)
That is Mickey Mouse to put it politely.
    :)

So we actually won the finals winning
8 races to 1 for the defenders.

So in a post on the design and race rules ,
I should have left that little gem out ?

Is that what you are suggesting ?

      Why ?

      note:
I suspect there is very little interest in all this here , so I only put up a few things that might be of interest to a few.
I only follow it because everything to do with the sea and boating interests me , and knowing some involved ,
in all aspects of the industry ,
and involvement with past innovation's etc.

At the moment , not sure how they even going to afford it.
delay the Christchurch and Kaikoura rebuilds ?
Let infrastructure get even further behind ?

They can't even go back to the previous Cup village , wharves , docks and sheds.
      All fully redeveloped now .
(unless a whole heap of people , businesses , boats and things move out)
