it can be reasonable to believe that at some point in ancient times that we could have been visited.

for all we know, aliens could have had an advance civilization on mars before we humans knew how to make tools.

the earth is 4+ billion years old same with mars. the earliest humans around 4 million years ago and recently homo sapiens begin around 200 000 years old. to the earth we've only lived a drop in the bucket compared to how old the earth really is.

if mars sustained life back say even 1-3 billion years ago, an advance civilization could have easily rose and fell with out us humans every knowing about it, 'cept through speculation. the bigger question is where did they go, did they know their planet was doom? if they did know their planet was doomed, maybe they made some sort of martin version of noha's arc and sent it to earth.

we have already dropped so many probes on mars the next step is to actually step foot on their soil. look at how rapidly we are moving, the last 100 years have seen some of the most remarkable improvements to technology and society, if we don't all kill each other, the next 100 years we'll see a man/woman on mars within our life time.
