Hall of Fame quarterback Yelberton Abraham (Y.A.) Tittle, a prolific passer in an age when the NFL was dominated by the running game, passed away late Sunday in Palo Alto, California, at the age of 90. Tittle, who suffered from severe dementia in the last years of his life, died of natural causes with four generations of his family at his side. He first etched his name in sports history by becoming the first professional football player to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1954:



After playing in college for Louisiana State University, Tittle played 17 professional seasons for the Baltimore Colts, San Francisco 49ers, and NY Giants. In addition to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he was also enshrined in the 49ers Hall of Fame and the Giants Ring of Honor. He was a 7 time pro bowler and enjoyed a remarkable late career resurgence when he was traded by SF, where he had lost his starting job, to the NYG. Considered by most to be washed up by that time, he was not expected to start in New York either. Not only did he win the starting job, but in 4 years with the Giants, Tittle would win the Jim Thorp Award (1961), set the NFL record for TD passes in a game (7 in 1962), TD passes in a season (33 in 1962; broke his own record with 36 in 1963). At the age of 37, Tittle won NFL MVP with his record shattering season, during which he led the Giants to their third straight NFL Championship game. Although he never won a title as a QB, he put that into perspective years later in an interview:

"The same thing seemed to follow me all my life, never, ever really winning the big game ... But I did win, really, in the long run because I have four wonderful children and grandchildren."

Oliver Stone, a two time Academy Award winner for Best Director (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July), grew up a huge fan of Tittle and cast him in the role of a football coach in 1999's Any Given Sunday.

The oldest living former major league baseball player is no longer living. Bobby Doerr, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, died yesterday at the age of 99. His death was announced this morning by the Boston Red Sox, for whom Doerr played his entire career.

Bobby Doerr had been the last major league baseball player still alive who played in the 1930's and one of only three remaining players whose MLB career began before the outbreak of WWII. He was also the first member of the Baseball Hall of Fame to live to the age of 99.
