Just curious what everyone thinks of the current age consent laws throughout the U.S. Hypothetical situation: A 15 year old pursues a 22 year and knowingly, willingly, and voluntarily engages in sexual activity with the 22 year old...should that still be considered statutory rape? This question is not intended to address child predators...I'm talking about the cases where it is consenual by both parties but initiated by the minor. Should the adult be labelled a sex offender, do jail time, etc????

Does it make a difference if the adult is male/female?

This question should definitely stir the hornet's nest...

I think that as long as the sex stays consensual(hmmm, I spelled that wrong I think, sorry!)throughout the whole entire experience, the man should not have to do jail time. Although I don't think it's right when an underage girl and a (overage?) male have sex then afterwards she feels "dirty" or something and decides to report it as a rape. That sickens me. I don't know how often it happens, but my friend did that, I wasn't her friend much longer.

 

I actually just heard a story about a co-worker's friend. He was at a part that a 15 year old girl was at, and she had obviously fooled the bar, so she fooled the guy as well. He took her back to a hotel and had sex with her, the girls parents found out and pressed charges, the guy is no a regisitered sex offender.

I personally think its bullshit, because no one basically heard his side of the story, hes just a sex offender who "Raped" a 15 year old girl.

This is a hard question because it depends.. you can make a seven-year old consent to sex if you play it right, and thats just wrong, I guess that once you hit 15-16, you should be responsible for your own "consent."

 

It's a good question. I've looked at this from a few differant angles. Overall, I think it's a bad situation. Lets say the minor concents, how can you prove that? Also, if it's initiated by the minor, how can you prove that?

I don't think an adult male should be conciderd a sex offender if they pick up a minor at a bar. That minor is knowingly putting herself in a place where she doesn't belong. The idea of picking a woman up at a bar insures that she's at least 21 years old. In this type of situation the responsibility should be spread. The bar, the adult, the minor, the minor's Parents... not just putting it all on the fall guy, the adult. It seems the parents and/or minor both cry rape to avoid being responsible for their own actions. I for one do think the adult should be resonsible. Maybe not jail and a regestered sex offender, but should be responsible for his actions. What does it say about the adult's character if they fall into bed with any female they pick up at a bar. Actions speak louder than words.

 

Minors

If the adult does not know the minor is 15 then how do you hold them responsible (that may be hard to prove). But sex with a 15 year old is wrong, unless your are 15. I could read about it all day long but reality and fantasy are not even close, thats why we spend time in here.

 

Tricky! I would say, obey the law. No sex with the under-aged - male or female.

 

I say if its purely consentual(sp?) that both peopl are responsible...I dont understand how they can lable that "rape". My Friend (underage) got caught with an older guy, and they tried to pin rape on him, but she just refused the rape kit...so he didnt do time, and they got married when she was 18...They call it rape?...thats fucked up...

 

Interesting topic. I think people need to remember that 15 year olds are all different. Some 15 year olds will be mature enough to make that decision, other 15 year olds are still very much children.

I also notice that a lot of chat in this thread is about 15 year old girls, no underage guys being mentioned....

Also, what about two underage people having sex? If they are in a relationship, then one of them is bound to reach 16 before the other. What then?

Hey, Well im canadian and i know this aint much help for an amarican, but heres what i know in canada here. The legal age for sex is 14 no matter how old the other person is, if someone is 13 and the other person is like say 20 its illegal, but there is one loophole to this which is a 2 year age difference, say the 13 yr old was with a 15 yr old then its fully legal as long as they are both ready for it you know. BUT! if a babysitter was to have sex with whom they were babysitting no matter the age at all it would be fully illegal because they are working and its called sumtin really stupid lol, sorry cant remember the word. Well this is all true in canada, hmmm ill look into sex ages for the American laws. Well, after reading the post from Canada. I seriously wish I lived there. What a great law. That is the only time I don't blame Canada! America should our laws changed to that.
