Im not american, i have never been to america and from what i see, hear and read about (which of course might not be right because im not there) america i wouldnt want to go there now either, america has to sort out this racist shit that is going on its pathetic, those white americans that go on about how bad the blacks and mexicans are no wonder they hate you, you talk about them like shit for no reason and if they have lived up to the stereotype that they have its the white racist americans that have brought it on, there is also from what i gather alot of uneducated, angry, aggresive, bitter and stupid police officers over there that are givin a gun when they shouldnt even be allowed to be givin a fork to feed themselves, anyway im not part of it but from my point of view and probably most of the worlds america has to sort its own shit out before it thinks it is a powerfull country in the world ( which it undoubtedly was the most powerfull country in the world) At one point, everyone needs to get along the world would be a better place, help people in need dont make things worse

Racism in Scotland: One third of ethnic minority Scots have experienced discrimination

More than half of incidents of racial discrimination in Scotland go unreported, according to a recent survey. Researchers at Strathclyde University, working with polling company Survation, found that a third of black and ethnic minority Scots (BME) had experienced discrimination in the past five years, with 60% of incidents not reported to police.

More than 500 people across Scotland were questioned for the survey, which researchers say is the first to focus on the experiences of ethnic minority Scots.

Those surveyed said that discrimination was not confined to any particular area, but was encountered in getting a job (36%), in being promoted (61%), in education (35%), and in the use of public transport (35 per cent).

More than 82% of those who experienced discrimination said it was due to their ethnicity, while 42% said it was due to their religion.

Some ethnic groups said they had experienced more discrimination than others, with nearly 45% of respondents with a Black African Caribbean heritage saying they had experienced discrimination, compared with 29% of Asian heritage and 23% of mixed heritage backgrounds.

Though 60% said they had not reported an incident of discrimination, 82% of those surveyed said they would encourage friends of family members to report racist incidents.

Dr Nasar Meer of Strathclyde's School of Social Work and Social Policy, who led the research, said that more was needed to understand the problem.

"There is clearly a perception of both low-level and more obvious experiences of racial discrimination in Scotland, but also of under-reporting, and much more research is needed to show how and in what ways this may be occurring.

1. Between 2000 and 2013, the per capita rate of murders with a known or suspected racist element in Scotland was higher than in the rest of the UK - 1.8 murders per million people in the population compared to 1.3[1].
2. There were more than 4,600 racist incidents recorded by the police in Scotland during 2012/13 – around 90 per week[2], and almost certainly just the tip of the iceberg.
3. 28% of Scotland’s people think there is sometimes good reason for prejudice against certain groups.[3]
4. 10% would be unhappy if a black or Asian person joined their family circle, rising to 37% if a Gypsy/Traveller joined .
5. Black and ethnic minority communities in Scotland are significantly more likely to live in relative poverty – at 25% for 2012/13, compared to 14% for the white-British group[5] and at greater risk of severe and extreme poverty[6].
6. Just 0.85% of Modern Apprentices in training as of March 2014 were estimated to be from BME communities – despite 6% of our young people being BME .
7. 2011/12 figures showed that, for local authority jobs, even after the interview stage, white candidates were almost twice as likely to be appointed as BME candidates[8].
8. Just 1.3% of police staff, 1.1% of local authority staff, and 0.85% of fire service staff are BME[9] - despite BME people making up more than 4% of Scotland’s population. Even in Glasgow, the City Council’s BME workforce is 1.9% of the total, despite the BME population of the city amounting to 11.6%[10].
9. DWP research (which included employers in Scotland) showed a person with a ‘BME name’ had to send an application away 16 times to achieve a successful response compared to the 9 times for someone with a ‘white name’ - even though they were submitting the same application[11].
10. In 25 of our 32 local authorities there are no BME Councillors at all, and there are only 4 Black minority ethnic women councillors in the whole country.[12]

I am an American. America is a big place, with a lot of different parts, with lots of different attitudes. There's a lot to recommend a lot of places in America.

I've not noticed racism, except on the news. Being white, I probably wouldn't.

What a complete load of shit, honestly i dont get how people can actually believe things they just type into google, there is nowhere near the kind of racism in scotland as there is in the states, i live here it does not happen, can you say the same for your country? There is racism in england but not scotland, murders in scotland are caused by white people

 

As an American it makes me sad to read this and I would love to tell you that you are wrong but the fact of the matter is racism is rampant in the United States . All I can say is that not all Americans are ignorant there are many diverse people living and working in harmony and for every bad cop that makes the news there hundreds more good ones who make a diffidence . The media does it's best to divide our people and between that and leaders with their own agenda some of us have lost their way . But I believe that things have a way of unraveling as they should it just takes time don't write that us trip off yet

@Heywood123 thanks you, yes ofcourse theres is good people its the same as everywhere else and i think what makes it worse for america is the fact its probably the most well know country in the world and gets more media attention, there is bad everywhere in the world including scotland we have alot of problems here aswell ofcourse but i just dont understand racism and police having guns and shooting at their own free will for know reason apart from the person he is shooting is black in some cases i have seen

I fully admit that there are problems with police and such, but I'd hardly say racism is "rampant" based on that alone. Our police force has several institutional problems aside from racism that are far more important and would solve problems far more effectively.

But I think to say racism is "rampant" does a great injustice to the successes that have been seen over the years, and vastly oversimplifies issues.
