You are confusing the suppression of facts and ideas with ending reverence for an evil past.

In Germany one does not see statues of leaders of the Third Reich. In Russia one does not see statues of Stalin and Lavrentiy Beria.

There may be a few statues of Lenin still standing in Russia. I am confident there are none in countries that broke away from Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union, and none in former Soviet "allies" (actually subject nations) in the Warsaw Pact.

The Confederacy was an evil country dedicated to the preservation of an evil institution.

Several days ago I posted a video of one of my favorite Civil War songs. I asked that it be removed, because I thought it might violate the Rule against posting a photo of an underage child. I will now enjoy posting the lyrics:

    ---------

Marching Through Georgia, by Henry Clay Work

Bring the good old bugle, boys, we'll sing another song
Sing it with a spirit that will start the world along
Sing it as we used to sing it, 50,000 strong
While we were marching through Georgia.

    Chorus
Hurrah! Hurrah! we bring the jubilee!
Hurrah! Hurrah! the flag that makes you free!
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea
While we were marching through Georgia.

    Verse 2
How the darkeys shouted when they heard the joyful sound
How the turkeys gobbled which our commissary found
How the sweet potatoes even started from the ground
While we were marching through Georgia.

    Verse 3
Yes and there were Union men who wept with joyful tears,
    When they saw the honored flag they had not seen for years;
Hardly could they be restrained from breaking forth in cheers,
While we were marching through Georgia.

    Verse 4
"Sherman's dashing Yankee boys will never reach the coast!"
So the saucy rebels said and 'twas a handsome boast
Had they not forgot, alas! to reckon with the Host
While we were marching through Georgia.

    Verse 5
So we made a thoroughfare for freedom and her train,
    Sixty miles in latitude, three hundred to the main;
Treason fled before us, for resistance was in vain
While we were marching through Georgia.

Does anyone think removing the statues is going to change the minds of the people?
What do you think would happen if we demanded that all streets in America named after Martin Luther King be changed?
Would that change the minds of anyone?

During the Civil War the Union had two weapons it was barely aware of: the Henry Rifle, and the Gatling Gun. The Henry Rifle was the first repeating rifle. The Gatling Gun was the first forerunner of the machine gun. The Henry Rifle was available at the beginning of the Civil War. The Gatling Gun became available in 1862.

If the Union Army had used these weapons intelligently and thoroughly the Union Army could have ended the Civil War a year or two earlier by annihilating the Confederate Army, and with it most of the marriageable white men of the South.

Hundreds of thousands of white women in the South who wanted to get married would have had to choose the men who had killed their brothers, husbands, and sweet hearts, or they would have had to chose recently freed slaves.

Minds are changing. That is why the statues are coming down. The federal government is not forcing their removal. Local governments are removing them because the people who vote for those governments no longer think the statues are acceptable.

Bullshit, the people didn't ask for the statues to come down. None of them, much less a majority.

Mandela was arrested for inciting violence in South Africa. And he was responsible for a number of bombings .

But that was different . He was a leftist .

So no one is going to have a problem with any statues devoted to him.

Americans prior to the American revolutionary war regularly targeted British patrols and sometimes killed them.

People who were fighting for a Jewish state in what is now Israel Were what we would call terrorists today .

I'm tempted to give a whole bunch more examples but you get my point .

History really is written by whoever won and the South lost .

You are very right, the government is not forcing the removal of the statues. The majority of th epeople are not for it either.
6 people made the decision to remove the statues.

As I have said many many times when it comes to political exoression , it is nearly always the left that first tries to ban it when it is in opposition to their own values

They are very frustrated by the First Amendment and are constantly trying to do end runs around it.

They like the more left wing governments in Europe that have made hate speech whatever that means illegal .

Can't do that here so they work with in the educational system . Schools are not allowed to allow certain speakers not by law or any vaguely associated statute but by the fact that board of regents are more than aware that their funding and maybe even their careers would be in jeopardy if they allowed certain forms of speech on campus even if that speech was given equal time by speakers of their own choosing .

There used to be this concept of the great chain of being and the notion that if only people were to fall within their proper stations everything would be fine because then we would be in harmony with God and His plan . God was at the top then the angels then the rulers of the earth and it moves down to rocks and so forth at the bottom .

Well Liberals have abandoned the notion of God and replaced the notion of God with a special and properly educated elite which coincidentally happens to be them .

The masses cannot be trusted to make proper decisions for themselves .

They claim that they are protecting the masses from themselves and their crass values

Not much has changed in human behavior from the medieval period to today.

We are still expected to give the wall to our betters.

Giving the wall is an interesting expression and it's worth looking up.

Change every street name and school name to MLK Memorial, and the loudmouthed puke is still a plagiarist and philanderer.

(And incidentally, he's also a role model. If you're into plagiarists and philanderers.)

In Jackson there is a member of the city council that spends most of his time changing the name of everything in the city, from street names to the airport, to names of black people. Meanwhile this week a woman went to Kroger shopping at 1am and left her car running in the parking lot with her 6 year old boy in it. 3 black boys came up to the car and hopped in driving it away with the little boy still inside. The next day the car was found with the little boy full of bullet holes still in the back seat.

I can't even wrap my head around the story .

I can just say that it makes me feel like I want to throw up.

Maybe people were created equal but they sure don't stay equal and some are unworthy of even their own life

They caught them the next day. In Madison country. In Jackson criminals do not really try to run. It is a sanctuary city for criminals. No other law enforcement are allowed to even chase a criminal into the city limits. No matter what crime they were committing. The city council, the sheriff, and the city police chief have told the citizens to throw rock, bottles, and brick at any police car they see other than Jackson's. They will be back on the street in 6 months.

Lawmakers in Alabama approve protections for confederate monuments
    Published May 20, 2017

Alabama lawmakers of Friday approved sweeping protections for Confederate monuments, names and other historic memorials, as some Southern cities rethink the appropriateness of keeping such emblems on public property.

The measure "would prohibit the relocation, removal, alteration, renaming, or other disturbance of any architecturally significant building, memorial building, memorial street, or monument" that has stood on public property for 40 or more years," it reads. Changes to names or memorials installed between 20 and 40 years ago would need permission from a new state commission.

African-American lawmakers opposed the bill at every step of the legislative process, saying argued that solidifies a shameful legacy of slavery.

"You say we are protecting history. We are not protecting history. We are protecting monuments that represent oppression to a large part of the people in the state of Alabama," said Sen. Hank Sanders, an African-American Democrat from Selma.

Supporters argued that the measure should protect all kinds of history — not just Confederate symbols.

Sen. Gerald Allen, the bill's Republican sponsor, criticized what he called a "wave of political correctness" wiping out monuments to people he said were historically significant even if they had their personal flaws.

The legislation would also apply to schools named to memorialize people.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey added an amendment, which lawmakers approved, to clarify that schools could change locations and do renovations, but not change names. The amendment came after lawmakers raised concerns that schools, which are often named for people, could not do renovations or relocate under the bill's directive.

Governments around the South are reconsidering the appropriateness of monuments honoring the Confederacy. Some have decided to remove them altogether, while others would add statues honoring civil rights figures, or plaques providing more historical information about slavery and the legal segregation that followed.

Officials in New Orleans have been removing several Confederate monuments. The proposed removal of a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia, prompted a torch-lit protest and a candle-lit counter-demonstration there.

Birmingham's park board has approved a resolution to remove a 52-foot-tall Confederate monument in a downtown park in 2015, prompting a legal challenge from a Southern heritage organization.

"Are you good with the sanitizing of history as we are seeing in New Orleans?" asked Rep. Mack Butler, R-Rainbow City. His opponents countered that local governments should be able to decide what's appropriate for their communities.

    Good job Alabama.
One thing many people may argue with but a statue such as the ones removed could have been Donald Duck and Goofey and still been beautiful works of art.
I doubt you could find 2 out of 10 New Orleans citizens who cold name a single person on any of the 4 statues. They were works of art and people visiting the city appreciated them. Now they are gone. What is going to replace them?
