Just watching Phelps vs Shark on Discovery and he is training to outrun a GWS and is outfitted with a monofin that took 4 seconds off his WR pace.

He beat a reef shark in trials but lost to a hammerhead but the big race has a very hungry looking GW for 100meters.

Sharks are fast but only in short bursts and fade after 25 meters, still plenty of time to chow down LOL.

Anyone watching this ???

 

They are showing some insane underwater video of GW's attacking the cameraman's cage. They look pissed right off ...

So you do know that this is only a simulation but after extensive testing and filming they portrayed a 100m race course and he did actually swim the distance ...

Final results :

Shark 36.1 seconds
Phelps 38.1 seconds

All in all not fucking bad and well under WR pace for both of them and Phelps was actually neck and neck until the 50m mark where the shark went into overdrive and took the lead for good.

 

Maco sharks are actually faster than GW's ...

Exactly how do you get a great white shark to race a 100 meter lane

Then , how do you make it go full speed , unless it is catching food ?

They have no need to race , unless both hungry , and within striking distance of food ,
or possibly , being chased by a killer whale.

 

They baited the waters with chum to entice the GW and then towed a simulated seal decoy behind a boat and had the shark chase it numerous times until they could get an accurate reading on it's capability since sharks do not normally swim in straight lines and they mashed the results together to do the simulation. The shark did a final lunge at the end of the test where it showed it's true killer instinct as it caught the decoy and devoured it. That final push was the difference in the race ...

There should never have been any doubt as to the winner but Phelps did put in a nice run too.

All a promo for a great week of quality shark shows. The ratings show it was a complete success ...

 

It would suck to be a shark, they can never stop moving or they will drown ...

I actually heard someone once say if confronted you should try grabbing it by the tail fin and tow it backwards to kill it, ya ok I will get right on that LOL.

The follow up show I saw on the crocs vs. sharks along the Australian coast was pretty interesting. Would be a bitch to be a Sea Turtle....

Tomorrow they are interviewing a shark that once actually escaped with it's life after confronting Hush on a hedonist beach LMAO. Right afterward the shark ate the interpreter and interviewer LOL.

 

Some sharks need to constantly move...but not all of them.

Sharks can be subdued if they're flipped on their backs, it's how the researchers get a chance to work on them.

 

You would know better than I so thanks for the info but if I ever need to flip a shark over to subdue it I will have already shit my wetsuit and had a heart attack so it may as well just finish me off lol.

It's not even close to a fair fight, they can get "traction" with their flippers but I dare one to piss me off if I am ever walking on the bottom of the ocean where I can get some footing.

By the 30th I will literally know WAY TOO MUCH about sharks and will never go scuba diving ever again lol.

If the shark has a grip on you, stick your fingers in his eye and rip it out and he'll swim away in pain/shock. That's your best chance.

At any rate, the show was a nice gimmick and a way for Phelps to make some money. It's tough for a world class swimmer to earn money after the Olympics are no longer available to them. They made it seem like he was going to actually swim with a great white instead of a simulation.

 

I think it would have been more entertaining had they tied some raw beef around his waist, then let the shark chase him. I'd pay to see that!
