I'm not that cultured and never been to NYC, let alone take in a Broadway show there. I've seen a few popular plays that come through here though. Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera and Starlight Express come to mind.
What I like is a small dinner theater experience put on locally. I always enjoy those so much more.

Does Old Folsom still have the dinner theater with the melodrama?

I don't think so. They are fewer all the time.

I think you might mean Garbeau's Dinner Theater. It was close to Folsom just past the Gold River area. I used to like it but their choice of entertainment was lacking and now it's a comedy club called Mr. T's.

The 2017 season of New York City’s Shakespeare in the Park debuted its new year on May 23 and their portrayal of “Julius Caesar” comes with a liberal caveat — the character of Julius Caesar, who is stabbed to death on the Senate floor in William Shakespeare’s play — is portrayed by a man who is eerily similar-looking to President Donald Trump.

Yet, does anyone remember someone losing their job just for wearing a mask?

It’s All Fun and Games Until Obama’s Feelings Get Hurt

    8/13/13

Making fun of the president was a grand American tradition … until now.

Officials at the Missouri State Fair have banned for life a rodeo clown who entertained spectators during a bull riding contest while wearing a Barack Obama mask. "The rodeo clown won't be allowed to participate or perform at the fair again," the Associated Press reported Monday. "Fair officials say they're also reviewing whether to take any action against the Missouri Rodeo Cowboy Association, the contractor responsible for Saturday's event."

It's an extreme response but not a surprising one. For those who came in late the unwritten rules are simple: It's okay to wear a Nixon, Reagan or George W. Bush mask. A Barack Obama mask? No so much.

Making fun of the President of the United States is what we do in America. It's a subtle reminder that we are a nation of laws, not of men, and that we threw off the monarchy more than 225 years ago and have not looked back since. We poke fun at our elected leaders to keep them from getting too big for their britches, to remind them – and ourselves – that we are all just citizens, some having been chosen by the rest of us to carry a greater share of the responsibility for the conduct of civic affairs.

From Mark Twain to Will Rodgers, from Fred Allen to Mort Sahl, Johnny Carson and Jay Leno, humorists, clowns and comedians have made taking shots at politicians their bread and butter. Until Barack Obama that is.

In days past, making fun of the president, not just his policies but the man himself, was no big deal. Some, like FDR, Kennedy and Reagan, appeared to take it in stride and were able to give as good as they got. Others, like Nixon, found little to laugh at. Obama is different. People are all too sensitive about what passes for funny where he is concerned, lest it displace him from the pedestal on which his supporters have placed him.

Overall this sensitivity reflects what might be called a latent insecurity about his job performance, about his ability to lead the nation that brings to mind the story of the emperor and his new suit of clothes.

President Obama's policies have failed in large measure. The post-recession growth in the economy has been the most anemic since the end of World War II. The official unemployment rate during his time in office has consistently been over 7 percent, while the real unemployment rate, which includes people who have simply stopped looking for work, is closer to 14 percent. His signature health care law is a mess even before it is fully implemented, the latest example being Tuesday's report that the caps on out-of-pocket health care costs the statute imposed starting in 2014 are being pushed back to 2015. America is even less popular abroad than it was under George W. Bush and our relations with the Chinese, the Russians and the Islamic world – three hot button flash points – have all worsened. And yet, somehow, making fun of the president is in some ways still off limits.

Taste is not a factor here. There were plenty of things that were written about George W. Bush and said about Ronald Reagan that were in very bad taste, yet some people laughed and the tellers of the tale got away with it. Under Obama, people are so fawningly, stupidly concerned about hidden meanings and matters of perception that they are falling all over themselves to avoid giving offense.

It is unfortunate the culture has been changed in this way, for comedy's sake as well as the nation's well-being. It may be a naturally defensive posture to take given that the Alinskites who worship Obama and all that he stands for use public shaming as a rather effective bludgeon against anyone who gets in their way. As has been previously noted, in the age of the community organizer president the ones who scream the loudest, longest often win even when the facts are not on their side.

A lifetime ban on a poor rodeo clown who wore an Obama mask, when there is, as the AP noted, a tradition of poking fun at all presidents in the same way in that venue, is not only extreme but borders on Stalinist. Remember, a bad joke told in Soviet Russia could get one sent to the gulag. In this case the offender should probably be grateful he is only being sent to the unemployment line.

    -------------------------------

So, where are we? Make fun of Blowbama...lose your job and get banned from the industry. Simulate killing Trump....get applause. Nope. the left's not TOO fucked up.

Delta, Bank of America pull Public Theater sponsorships over Trump-like Julius Caesar

    6/11/17

Delta Air Lines and Bank of America yanked their sponsorships of New York’s Public Theater on Sunday over its controversial staging of “Julius Caesar” — which features a Donald Trump look-alike playing the role of the assassinated title character.

The free Shakespeare in the Park play has sparked outrage with it’s grisly portrayal of the president and bloody climax.

The characters onstage wear regular clothes throughout the outdoor production and stab a blond, suit and tie-clad Caesar to death to close out the show.

“No matter what your political stance may be, the graphic staging of Julius Caesar at this summer’s Free Shakespeare in the Park does not reflect Delta Air Lines’ values,” the company said in a statement, ending it’s four-year run as the official airline of the Public Theater

Their artistic and creative direction crossed the line on the standards of good taste,” they added. “We have notified them of our decision to end our sponsorship as the official airline of The Public Theater effective immediately.”

Bank of America, which has sponsored the outdoor venue for the past 11 years, also blasted the nonprofit in a statement Sunday.

“The Public Theater chose to present ‘Julius Caesar’ in a way that was intended to provoke and offend,” a spokesperson said. “Had this intention been made known to us, we would have decided not to sponsor it. We are withdrawing our funding for this production.”

The Public Theater’s rendition of Julius Caser, which runs until June 18, also reimagines the Roman leader’s wife as Melania Trump.

“I wonder how much of this ‘art’ is funded by taxpayers?” Donald Trump Jr. tweeted Sunday morning, in response to the depictions of the first lady and his dad.

“Serious question, when does ‘art’ become political speech & does that change things?” he said.

Delta’s announcement came just hours before members of the Public Theater gathered for the Tony Awards — and roughly two weeks after Kathy Griffin’s severed head stunt.

Social media users had been urging the airline to pull out for days.

“Cancelled [flight] reservations,” wrote one Twitter user, who was outraged by Delta’s sponsorship. “Julius Caesar is shameful. Have integrity support @realDonaldTrump.”

    Ugh.

What have you peeps done to my nice Broadway thread?

I have no opinion on that snuff porn they're running on Central Park, except to say, "The fault, Dear Brutus, is not with the stars, but with the moonbats."

This thread is months old, idiot

And don't pretend you're capable of understanding it.

When God gave you extra melanin, the genes had to go somewhere, so He swapped them for culture.

    So was the Hamilton thing.

    I am angry?

    Hmm.

What have I said about Hamilton that offends you?

You do know that Hamilton is not jungle art. It is caribbean art. So, you have no need to defend it, or take offense over things said about it, or pretend to enjoy it, or pretend to understand it.

It is not even rap, in the strict sense. So you don't even have to get defensive over that.

Hamilton employs black people. That's about it. That doesn't mean you get to lay some goofy claim over it. Unless you're Puerto Rican. And you're not. So shush, sit down, and listen to a grownup.

Hamilton distills from the entire rap genre its one and only salient characteristic: its cadence. And applies that single attribute to show music in such a way as to engender a fresh and interesting aesthetic. Yet a tediously repetitive and ponderous one that necessarily wears thin, because rap by its nature is tedious, vacuous noise.

Rap and hip-hop are repetitive and simple, because they are not artforms. They are mind-numbing pablum for simple people who comprehend little or nothing about their surroundings and comprehend best when presented with cartoons.

Cultured folk have said, "Well that is interesting," and we have dutifully given the obligatory affirmative action nod to the effort.

Hamilton has received its participation trophy.

Thus Hamilton had its flash in the pan, and while no doubt there are a hundred and one coked up Lin Manuel wannabes cooking new copycat rap/hip-hop stage spectaculars with black Kennedys, black Nixons, black Roosevelts, and black Charles Mansons, we can rest easy, because the flash in the pan has passed, the ship has sailed, and thanks to a merciful God, Hamilton will be the last culturally vacant borefest of its kind.

Don't drink the Koolaid lol ...

Broadway limits the conversation and there are only so many attractions there to talk about, whereas there are just as cultured if not more than Broadway. London comes to mind ... hell Toronto has an incredible theater district as well.

    Besides, New York sucks lol.

You'd like School of Rock I think. Another great musical. Eclipsed by Hamilton that year, but still a very good show. And in all seriousness, Hamilton rightfully took best show that year. Lin Manuel is brilliant. I just hope we're done with rap adaptations for awhile. It wears thin, even when scored to a brilliant book.

The new Phanton Of The Opera Tour is coming to Edmonton July 25th - Aug 6th and I bought a group of tickets for us and close friends to go see it.

I saw the original and paid 500 per ticket to have dinner with Andrew Lloyd Webber and the cast years ago in Calgary after the show.
