I just heard this on the news but the recent earthquake in Chile was so powerful it slightly changed Earth's axis actually shortening the day by like microseconds.

That just really caught my attention because our poles reverse polarity sometimes and when I asked a geology professor during a lab assignment one day what would happen if the polls shifted like that, he just whispered; "That would be bad" and wondered off shaking his head.

Probably nothing of course but it did catch my attention, and now I need to get hold of some of my old MWD buddies to see if this has had an effect on them because all their measurements use the magnet fields, and axis of the earth to provide the data of where they're at and where they're going in the well bore.

Not really. Time's a man-made construct based entirely upon his own perceptions.

The Earth just wiggled a bit and spun on its axis a split-millisecond faster than it did last time or next time. We just apply a disproportionate amount of importance on the rate of that spin. No timeloop. :excited:

Although, the concept of the Earth moving (underneath my feet - not at a global level) creeps the shit outta me. The Earth ain't supposed to move.

 

i´m not thinking about the microsecs KN ... i´m thinking about how something like this can have such a strong impact on the "stability" of the planet, that small time diference is just a small consequence
