Last night I happened to watch a CNN documentary entitled "Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door", which focuses on the fight in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, over the construction of an Islamic center and mosque. Soledad O'Brien does a pretty good job of letting people speak for themselves, and it must have been pretty hard for her to keep from saying either "are you serious?" or even better, "are you fucking nuts?".

Anyway, you really should see it, if you want to get a good picture of the face of anti-Muslim bigotry in this country. If you thought those people in New York City were only concerned about the desecration of the World Trade Center site, think again. The documentary shows them for who and what they really are -- people with no understanding and no regard for the provisions of the U.S. Constitution concerning freedom of religion, people driven by fear of people who don't look, act and think just like they do.

What really shocked me, though, more than anything, was that a black man was helping to lead the charge against the local Muslim community. He didn't seem to grasp the irony -- that the same kind of people he was now consorting with had, in times past, relegated African-Americans to the back of the bus, denied them the use of restrooms and drinking fountains, burned down their churches, and hanged them from the nearest tree-limb.

And the second thing that shocked me was the attorney for the anti-Muslim group, a fellow named Joe Brandon. And it wasn't that he apparently bought his clothes from "Clowns-R-Us". He actually tried to make the case in court that Islam is not a religion. With a straight face.

The program is going to air again, several times, later this week. See it.

 

Damn I forgot to watch that last night and really wanted to but as you say I think I'll get plenty of chances. Because I really think we need to address this really ugly side of us.

I am stunned at not just the amount of hatred I see but the abysmal level of ignorance in our nation by people who claim to love the US and then just spit all over everything its supposed to stand for and represent.

But, unlike you, I will not be surprised to see a black man take up the cause of his oppressors and volunteer to be used as a very useful token for even the appearance of acceptance.

Hell, I've been watching Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas do that for 30 years.

PS Soledad O'Brien is really an excellent reporter on these kinds of features I believe. I saw her do one on being black in America and sat right there listening to a racist that didn't realize Soledad she was at least half black. She never batted an eye during the interview but damn sure corrected him later.

 

Yes, I actually gained some respect for her while watching this.

Most people in our country are fucking retarded, and if you dont understand why we dont want mosques in our areas you are one of those people. Their religion conflicts with our government, therefore they do things that are extremely inappropriate, when those actions go against our people, you have a huge fucking problem. I'm glad people are sticking up for themselves, unlike those pussies in New York who let a mosque get built. Just a reminder of what their religion preaches, hatred towards freedom.

Anyone who wants to defend them, live their lifestyle, because your breaking their laws as you live, and if you lived in their country, you would be stoned to death.

 

This doesn't surprise me at all. I have lived in and around TN for years, as well as Mississippi. I am totally familiar with Murfreesboro and all of the cities in TN, and have never even heard of the Muslim community building in Tennessee.

Once more, I've employed a huge cast of African. Muslims. These states wouldn't take kindly to an official Muslim presence. With that being said, I've always seen people be nice to these guys, but I see how they would be threatened.

Haven't seen the documentary. The main fear expressed by people who disapprove of Islamic cultures in my opinion is this:

Sharia law and its part in Muslim culture; being accepted both in word and in practice, to coexist within the USA alongside Catholic/Christian/other religions.

Proponents will talk about what "our" rights are. They will claim to be the voice of a dying nation where national pride does not exist. These same people will cry and whine about freedom too. How allowing other nationalities to find a place where they too can have the freedom to worship, should not be allowed if someone wants to label themselves a true American. Is this about right???

I on the other hand believe that the land of the free is meant to support and sustain everyone who wishes to find refuge here.
