The way of life for which poor whites in the South fought was a way in which they made less money than whites with similar skills in the North. Farms managed by a single white family with no slaves could not compete with plantations. Skilled workers in the South usually earned lower wages than workers with their skills in the north.

The clear majority of European immigrants moved to free states in the North because that is where the jobs and economic opportunities were. That is why when the Civil War began the number of whites in the North was much higher than the number of whites in the South.

A new petition is calling on state leaders to replace Confederate statues in New Orleans with ones of pop star Britney Spears.

"Do the right thing: Replace the Confederate statues with an actual Louisiana hero and influential human being, Britney Spears," the petition reads.

The Cultural Thucydidean Trap
