Washington (CNN)Democrats have won key races in Virginia and New Jersey, CNN projects, their first major wins during the tenure of President Donald Trump and a boost heading into the 2018 midterms, when control of US House and Senate will be up for grabs.

The blue wave along the East Coast saw Ralph Northam winning the governor's race in Virginia and Phil Murphy victorious in New Jersey. Democrats are also on pace to capture control of the Virginia General Assembly, and several liberals, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio won their mayoral elections...

Democrats also made significant down-ballot gains in Virginia. Justin Fairfax won the lieutenant governor's against Republican Jill Holtzman Vogel, a state senator known for her sponsorship of a 2012 bill that would have required women seeking abortions to undergo vaginal ultrasounds.

Not surprising the east coast voting Democrat. Not that party lines truly matter.

Cities and areas of dense population nearly always vote Democrat.

Right. Cannabis consumers can breath a sigh of relief....:p:biggrin:

The newly elected governor said: "The criminalization of marijuana has only served to clog our courts and cloud people’s futures, so we will legalize marijuana," he said during his primary night victory speech. "And while there are financial benefits, this is overwhelmingly about doing what is right and just.”

Actually, marijuana won big in the other ballots too.

Guess it is OK to be from Goldman Sachs if you are a democrat....

Meet New Jersey's next governor, a Goldman Sachs veteran and major Democratic donor
    • Former Goldman Sachs executive and major Democratic donor Phil Murphy won the election for New Jersey governor Tuesday.
    • Murphy has had to defend his more than 20 years at Goldman while pushing a progressive platform.
    • He has tried to avoid the shadow of the state's last Democratic governor, the unpopular Jon Corzine, who was Goldman's CEO before becoming a New Jersey politician.

The Wall Street White House: Trump hires fifth Goldman Sachs staffer to the administration
He trashed the bank during the campaign, but now Trump is surrounded by Goldman veterans

    TAYLOR LINK03.16.2017•2:15 PM

Despite the "drain the swamp" rhetoric during the campaign, Trump had a complicated relationship with Wall Street. He was, at times, a fierce critic of the banks, slamming rival Hillary Clinton for her paid speeches in front of Goldman Sachs. But he also sought to relieve the burdens of regulation on Wall Street, pledging to roll back legislation, such as Dodd-Frank, that he said impeded certain banking practices.

I think that the meaning of this is way over blown. Va. Is my home state and has been trending Democrat for several cycles now. Much of the DC swamp lives in NOVA and the high population areas around the ocean have always been blue. Much of the state is still Red and in fact more Repubs voted now than 4 years ago, but so did more Dems. Saying that this is some type of referendum or revolution about Trump is probably a reach.
Trump didn't even campaign for Gillespie and when you get right down to it Gillespie didn't campaign for Gillespie.

Northam has already begun to be over shadowed by the Lt. Governor elect less than 24 hours later. I predict Northam will be quickly forgotten before his term is even over.

I do not want the United States to divide, but it may, and this map gives a good estimate of how it might divide. What would remain of the United States would be the west coast and Nevada, and the east coast from Virginia to Main. A few states in between would remain in the United States.

What would leave would be what I will call "the Restored Confederacy.'

What remains of the United States would have most of the best universities and most of the most sucessful corporations. There would be a brain drain. Most of the more intelligent young people born in the Restored Confederacy, AKA "flyover country," would go to the United States for their educations. They would stay to get jobs with the best corporations.

They would return to fly over country for high school and family reunions. They would stay long enough to remember why they left. Then they would hasten back to the Civilized World.

One more point: if the United States divides, I want it to happen without another civil war. There is no moral issue equivalent to ending slavery that would justify violence.

(CNSNews.com) – A new report by the Tax Foundation shows what percentage of each state’s revenue comes from the federal government through federal grants-in-aid, a sum that in total has reached $600 billion a year.

Federal grants-in-aid to state and local governments include payments for Medicaid, education funding assistance, infrastructure project support, housing grants, and other payments, according to the Tax Foundation.

For fiscal year 2013, which is the latest year for complete data, the Tax Foundation found that Mississippi got 42.9% of its general revenue from the federal government, and Louisiana came in second with 41.9% of its revenue from the U.S. Treasury.

The 10 states receiving the most in federal aid as a percentage of their general revenue, in order, were:
    1. Mississippi, 42.9% federal aid as percentage of general revenue
    2. Louisiana, 41.9%
    3. Tennessee, 39.5%
    4. South Dakota, 39.0%
    5. Missouri, 38.2%
    6. Montana, 37.4%
    7. Georgia, 37.3%
    8. New Mexico, 36.6%
    9. Alabama, 36.1%
    10. Maine, 35.3%
At the other end, the 10 states receiving the least in federal aid as a percentage of their general revenues were:

    40. Illinois, 25.9%
    41. New Jersey, 25.5%
    42. California, 25.0%
    43. Nevada, 25.0%
    44. Kansas, 24.9%
    45. Delaware, 24.8%
    46. Connecticut, 23.4%
    47. Virginia, 22.9%
    48. Alaska, 22.4%
    49. Hawaii, 21.5%
    50. North Dakota, 19.0%

“States with heavy reliance on federal grants-in-aid tend to have a combination of modest tax collections (reducing the denominator) and sizable low income populations (correlating with greater per capita reliance on Medicaid, housing assistance, and other low income and poverty relief programming, and with a greater share of federal education support),” said the Tax Foundation.

States with lower percentages of federal aid “tend to have higher per capita tax collections (growing the denominator) and populations with lesser reliance on federal assistance (shrinking the numerator),” said the Tax Foundation.

In its calculations, the Tax Foundation noted that “general revenues includes state taxes and fees, but excludes utility revenue, liquor store revenue, and insurance trust revenue.”

Of the ten states getting the highest percentage of their money from the federal government, two are blue states: New Mexico and Maine.

Of the ten states getting the lowest percentage of their money from the federal government seven are blue states: New Jersey, California, Nevada, Delaware, Connecticut, Virginia, and Hawaii.

Probably the best upset in all of New Jersey. And probably the one no one is paying attention to.

93-year-old WWII vet wins local New Jersey race for mayor

    11/8/17

A World War II veteran’s shoe-leather political campaign resulted in an upset win in a local New Jersey mayor’s race, according to a report.

Vito Perillo, a 93-year-old veteran of the US Navy who served in the Pacific Theater, wore out two pairs of shoes campaigning door-to-door in Tinton Falls and ousted the incumbent mayor, Gerald M. Turning, app.com reported.

Perillo got 53 percent of the vote compared to Turning’s 46 percent.

”I wanted to run because I was upset with some of the things this administration is doing,” Perillo, who will be 97 at the end of his term, told the website.

He said he was motivated to run after a pair of whistle-blower lawsuits against the police department cost Tinton Falls $1.1 million in settlements, the report said.

Turning, 63, served in the police department for 30 years and was the police chief from 2004 to 2011.

He was also the borough administrator from 2010 to 2014.

Monmouth County Board of Elections has to verify the results.

    You go, Vito!

One thing that is being overlooked here is there was a much bigger winner than the Democrats Tuesday night. And that winner is women who won offices coast to coast. Its actually phenomenal how many women replaced men Tuesday night because women turned out to vote in record numbers.

And most of those wins came straight out of the Women's March where they said they were not going to just protest. They were going to band together and take political action especially running for office. And they not only followed through women turned out to vote for them.

And the epitome of that is Ashley Bennett who defeated the New Jersey man who insulted the participants of the Women's March. She ran against him specifically for that. And she didn't just win she kicked his ass.
