Arizona Senate race no longer ‘too close to call’ as Democrat Kyrsten Sinema expands lead to more than 30,000 votes

Kyrsten Sinema just gained another chunk of votes as the ballot counting continues in Arizona.

While Republicans have attempted to try and stop votes from being counted in close elections, most states and counties have continued to ensure every ballot is counted as it was cast. As a result, Sinema is now over 30,000 votes ahead of Martha McSally, AZFamily.com reported.

“Election Officials estimate about 195,000 of these are early ballots, provisional and out-of-precinct ballots that voters cast or dropped off on Election Day,” according to a news release from the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office. “Additionally, about 3,000 early ballots that the Elections Department received before Nov. 6 must be tabulated.”

Arizona continues to count the ballots and more than 260,000 remain as of Saturday, AZCentral reported. McSally would have to win at least 150,000 of the 260,000 votes left to reclaim the lead and of those 260,000 votes left, at least 125,000 are from Maricopa County, where Phoenix is. That’s 57.7 percent of the ballots left that McSally would have to win.

Democrat Kyrsten Sinema wins Arizona US Senate seat

PHOENIX (AP) -- Democrat Kyrsten Sinema won Arizona's open U.S. Senate seat Monday in a race that was among the most closely watched in the nation, beating Republican Rep. Martha McSally in the battle to replace GOP Sen. Jeff Flake.

The three-term congresswoman won after a slow vote count that dragged on for nearly a week after voters went to the polls on Nov. 6. She becomes Arizona's first Democratic U.S. senator since 1994. Her win cemented Arizona as a swing state after years of Republican dominance.

Sinema portrayed herself as a moderate who works across the aisle to get things done.

McSally, a former Air Force pilot who embraced President Donald Trump after opposing him during the 2016 elections, had claimed that Sinema's anti-war protests 15 years ago disqualified her and said one protest amounted to what she called "treason."

But during her six years in Congress, Sinema built one of most centrist records in the Democratic caucus, and she voted for bills backed by Trump more than 60 percent of the time. She backed legislation increasing penalties against people in the country illegally who commit crimes.

McSally's attacks on Sinema reached back more than 15 years, when Sinema was a Green Party spokeswoman and liberal activist.

McSally backed Trump's tax cut, border security and the Affordable Care Act repeal agenda as she survived a three-way GOP primary in August, defeating two conservative challengers who claimed her support for Trump was fake. McSally also campaigned on her military record and support for the Armed Forces.

Sinema attacked McSally's leadership of last year's failed Affordable Care Act repeal effort as a sign that she would not protect Arizona residents with preexisting medical conditions. McSally argued that she would protect patients, despite her vote on the bill that would have removed many of those protections.

The contest drew more than $90 million in spending, including more than $58 million by outside groups, according to Federal Election Commission reports. Attack ads by both sides clogged the airwaves for months.

Sinema, 42, has a law degree, worked as a social worker and was a political activist in her 20s, running as an independent Green Party candidate for the Arizona House. She then became a Democrat and served several terms in the state Legislature. Sinema started as an overt liberal but developed a reputation for compromise among her Republican peers, laying the groundwork to tack to the center.

When the 9th Congressional District was created after the 2010 Census, Sinema ran for the Phoenix-area seat as a centrist and won the 2012 election.

McSally, 52, was the first female Air Force pilot to fly in combat, flying A-10 attack jets. She also was the first woman to command a fighter squadron, again in A-10s.

McSally lost her first race in Arizona's 2nd congressional district in 2012, when she was narrowly defeated by Democratic Rep. Ron Barber, who replaced Rep. Gabby Giffords after she was wounded in a 2011 assassination attempt. But McSally came back to win the 2014 election, beating Barber by a narrow margin. She was re-elected in 2016.

Flake was an outspoken critic of Trump and announced in 2017 that he would not seek re-election, acknowledging he could not win a GOP primary in the current political climate. His support of the president's initiatives, however, was mixed. He strongly backed last year's tax cut bill but criticized Trump's positions on free trade.

Judge Orders Review of All Provisional Ballots in Georgia Governor Race

A federal judge late Monday ordered the review of thousands of provisional ballots that haven’t been counted in Georgia’s tight governor race between Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp. Judge Amy Totenberg said the race cannot be officially certified until those ballots, believed to have been issued to as many as 27,000 voters, have been reviewed and counted. Abrams would need to gain more than 20,000 votes to force a runoff against Kemp. Judge Totenberg’s order also calls for a hotline for voters to check if their provisional ballots were counted, a review of voter registrations, and updated reports from the state government about why so many voters were required to use provisional ballots. The Georgia race has been beset with voter-suppression claims for weeks after a series of controversial moves by Kemp, who declined to step down as the top Georgia elections official—even though he was overseeing the election he was a candidate in.

Want to run? Fine. Resign your position.

That the candidate wasn’t required to insulate themselves from any and all dealings with the election the moment they announced their candidacy shows an abject failure on behalf whatever state or federal agency is responsible for protecting the sanctity of the election process.

Well lets see the Republicans had to defend 9 senate seats and the democrats had to defend 22, hard to gain with those odds, as well all the seats, if not the sitting senators were positions filled when Obama beat Romney in 2012, so he dragged a few that were questionable in with him, some of them were always doubtful to sustain. . And the Democrats will probably pick up 37 house seats, so hey lets see what happens that is so nice for Trump and his big victory in 2018, now as the new house is sworn and the new session begins. I don't think it will be business as usual.
Remember Trump lost the majority by a whooping 3 million votes, so most Americans didn't want him here in the first place, no one can deny that...I mean more people in America wanted a dump like Hillary over Trump. Damn that's really tough to take. Can you imagine being Trump and realizing what a loser you are that more people liked Hillary, Hell Id a quit! Even I gagged when I voted for her. No doubt 2016 election was the worse the country had ever had, our choices were cat poop or dog poop!

It Was A Big, Blue Wave: Democrats Pick Up Most House Seats In A Generation

Votes are still being counted in several House races. But the AP has now called another race in New Jersey, projecting Democrat Andy Kim the winner in the suburban Philadelphia 3rd Congressional District over incumbent Republican Tom MacArthur.

That means, more than a week after Election Day, Democrats have increased their House gains to a net of 34 seats — and, when all the vote is counted, they may get to 39.

Make no mistake: That is a very big wave.

How big? It's the most House seats gained by Democrats since the wave election following Watergate. President Richard Nixon resigned in August 1974, leading to Democrats' pickup of 49 seats that fall.

In 2006, the last time Democrats took over the House, when George W. Bush was president and the Iraq war was spiraling into civil war, Democrats gained 30 seats. They picked up 26 more in 2008, when Barack Obama was elected president. What's more, this cycle's seats are far more gerrymandered to favor Republicans than those were.

So what's left to be counted? In addition to the recounts for statewide offices in Florida and the outstanding vote in the Georgia governor's race, there are still eight House races to be called. Of those, Democrats very well may win five:

CA 39: Republican Young Kim leads in this open-seat race, but the margin is shrinking and down to about 700 votes, with Democrat Gil Cisneros gaining. There are many votes left to be counted in this district, which includes parts of Orange and Los Angeles counties. As of Tuesday afternoon, there were more than 261,000 votes left to be counted in Orange and 688,000 left in Los Angeles County.

CA 45: Democrat Katie Porter has now pulled ahead in this Orange County district after a week of trailing incumbent Republican Mimi Walters.

ME 2: GOP Rep. Bruce Poliquin is ahead, but Maine's ranked-choice voting system could give the race to Democrat Jared Golden. Perhaps seeing the writing on the wall, Poliquin has sued to challenge ranked-choice voting.

NY 22: Democrat Anthony Brindisi is holding on to a 1,200-vote lead over incumbent Republican Claudia Tenney in this upstate District that stretches from Binghamton past Utica.

UT 4: Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams, a Democrat, leads incumbent Republican Mia Love by about 1,200 votes.

Republicans lead in Georgia's 7th, New York's 27th and Texas' 23rd congressional districts and appear in stronger positions in those. All would represent holds for the GOP.

Republicans flipped two Democratic-held seats in Minnesota.

Note: The polls got it right. Democrats currently lead on the national House ballot by 7 percentage points, according to data compiled by David Wasserman of the Cook Political Report. (This link compiles the total number of votes cast and counted so far for all House races.)

The final NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll a week before the election had Democrats with a +9 advantage with likely voters (+6 with registered voters), well within the margin of error of the final result. The RealClearPolitics final congressional ballot average was Democrats +7.3. The current exact number is +7.1, and that is expected to climb as more votes in California are counted.

There are some 3.1 million votes left to be counted in California, according to the latest numbers from the California secretary of state's office, updated at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Then Trump took the idea that maybe Obama wasn't quite really an American by becoming the face and primary motivator of the Birther conspiracy loonies, and suddenly being a racist, homophobe and bigot was acceptable, at least in the minds of his demented followers.

He has never to my knowledge made a sincere effort to back away from that, and his behavior directly correlates with the empowerment felt by the Alt-Right. No one would have believed that running a car into a group of people no matter their political beliefs would be an acceptable form of reply without Trump's rallies where he constantly exhorted the crowd to commit violence against his detractors and the press, saying he had their backs if they did.

Ms Meyers was a peaceful protester and was murdered for it. And Trump owned it by saying there were good people "on both sides", ignoring the fact that "good people" don't commit murder with an automobile or any other weapon. Certainly they don't do it in this country over political differences, not matter how Kushner's friends in other countries or how his Puti-Poo act.

‘Things could get really dicey’: Trump is reportedly furious and lashing out at everyone as he realizes the how badly the GOP did in the midterms

In the past week, President Donald Trump has behaved even more frantically and erratically than he normally does — tweeting aggressively, excessively insulting reporters and skipping opportunities to honor American veterans, triggering negative press reports.

And according to a new report from the Washington Post documenting what it called “five days of fury,” it’s not just his public persona that has become more dour and testy. Behind the scenes, Trump is lashing out at allies and expressing his frustration toward those around him as the results from the 2018 midterm elections continue to pour in and look increasingly bad for the Republican Party.

“He was frustrated with the trip. And he’s itching to make some changes,” one anonymous official told the Post, referring to Trump’s visit this week to Europe. “This is a week where things could get really dicey.”

Even when British Prime Minister Teresa May reached out on Friday to offer congratulations on the midterms (despite his party’s defeats), the president reportedly responded with fury:

Trump berated May for Great Britain not doing enough in his assessment to contain Iran. He questioned her over Brexit and complained about the trade deals he sees as unfair with European countries. May has endured Trump’s churlish temper before, but still her aides were shaken by his especially foul mood, according to U.S. and European officials briefed on the conversation.

According to the report, Trump was personally offended when French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a speech denouncing nationalism, which was widely interpreted as a rebuke to the American president. Trump made his anger with Macron public on Twitter.

“The problem is that Emmanuel suffers from a very low Approval Rating in France, 26%, and an unemployment rate of almost 10%. He was just trying to get onto another subject,” Trump wrote. “By the way, there is no country more Nationalist than France, very proud people-and rightfully so!”

When Trump decided not to go to a World War I memorial outside Paris with other world leaders because of bad weather, he faced a torrent of criticism on Twitter and in the media. According to the report, Trump reacted angrily to his staff because they hadn’t foreseen the backlash.

“Trump told aides he thought he looked ‘terrible’ and blamed his chief of staff’s office, and [deputy White House chief of staff Zachary D. Fuentes] in particular, for not counseling him that skipping the cemetery visit would be a public-relations nightmare,” it said.

Trump’s anger has also focused on election officials, particularly in Florida, where the ongoing recount has undermined the early reported victories of his allies Gov. Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis.

The most obvious source of Trump’s continuous outpouring of anger is the devastating losses the GOP suffered in the 2018 midterms, even as the party has kept control of the Senate. Despite initial analyses suggesting that the blue wave had been a disappointment, as ballots continued to be counted, a consensus emerged that Democrats really had won a spectacular victory. Having claimed the elections as a personal triumph, Trump now looks weak and deluded.

But there’s another possible source of his anger. Other reports have suggested that White House officials believe special counsel Robert Mueller is prepared to hand down more indictments soon in the Russia investigation — or perhaps unseal indictments that have already been filed with the court. Donald Trump Jr. is the subject of much speculation as a potential target of the investigation.

It’s plausible that lurking possibility is weighing on Trump and increasing his stress levels — only compounded by his diminished standing after the midterms.

Just to be clear. The "Blue Wave" wasn't in the House races even though that number continues to increase. The real wave was in hundreds of legislator seats the Democrats won, control of 6 state legislatures, 7 governors, and judges where they elect them. Because those are who will be controlling the redistricting following the 2020 census and for the first time in 10 years actually do something about Republican Gerrymandering.

‘Stunning’: Historic victory for a Democrat in Maine after federal judge rejects GOP lawsuit

Maine’s 2nd congressional district made history Thursday afternoon as it named Jared Golden the winner of his race for incumbent Rep. Bruce Poliquin’s (R-Maine) seat, after the state used ranked-choice voting for the first time in a national race to determine the winner.

Shortly after a federal judge rejected Poliquin’s lawsuit in which he attempted to halt the ranked-choice voting (RCV) process, election officials forged ahead in their tabulation of ballots and found that Golden won 50.53 percent of the vote, compared to Poliquin’s 49.47 percent.

**“The first time ranked-choice voting is used in the state of Maine [and] we’ll have an instance where it will have made a difference—this is stunning,” Larry Diamond, a political scientist at Stanford University, told the Portland Phoenix ahead of the vote tabulation. “Either way it’s going to validate the logic of it, and it’s going to make for fairer elections.”

Maine voters reaffirmed their support for RCV last June—after a previous vote in favor of the system was blocked by the legislature—ensuring that voters in the 2nd district could rank the four candidates for Poliquin’s seat in order from their favorite to least favorite when they went to the polls on Election Day.

One of the candidates would have had to gather more than 50 percent of the first-choice voters in order for the election to be called. When Poliquin won only 46 percent of the vote and Golden won 45.9 percent, election officials prepared to distribute two independent candidates’ supporters’ second and third choices until either the Democrat or Republican gained a majority.

Maine’s plan to become the first state to use RCV for a federal election was briefly threatened when Poliquin filed his lawsuit, claiming that it was unconstitutional to allow voters to rank their choices in order to ensure they are represented by a lawmaker with the majority of support.

“There is a certain degree of irony because the remedy Plaintiffs seek could deprive more than 20,000 voters of what they understood to be a right to be counted with respect to the contest between Representative Poliquin and Mr. Golden,” wrote Judge Lance Walker in his opinion (pdf). “At oral argument, Plaintiffs emphasized that the First Amendment entitles them to express their support for their candidate. They feel that Maine is giving other voters disproportionate expression…The RCV Act actually encourages First Amendment expression, without discriminating against any given voter.”

“I am not persuaded that the United States Constitution compels the Court to interfere with this most sacred expression of democratic will,” the judge added.
