  2. Hello,

You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

I need to be able to recognize you in that picture. You need to have some pictures of your self in your gallery so I can compare that picture.

Please note that verification is completely optional and it won't give you any extra features or access. You will have a check mark (as I have now, if you want to look) and verification will only mean that you are who you say you are.

You may not use a fake pictures for verification. If you try to verify your account with a fake picture or someone else picture, or just spam me with fake pictures, you will get Banned!

The pictures that you will send me for verification won't be public

Hey you have to be creative to get some people to read these things..

I have a lot of things going about how the poor are carrying a big burden and a lot of extra cost.. I live in a small town, and the library here has today's newspapers and notheing else.

A can of Corn.. 2 for a dollar. but what is the size of a can compared to 20 or 30 years ago? I cannot find an answer to this and how much the price has increased..

The price of a pound of hamburger (we are lucky that they cannot change the size of a pound) 30 years ago? and where did the seasonal price of vegistables go... and where did the seasonal price of beef go..

Farmers sell off their beef in the fall so they will not have to feed them expensive dry food.... 30 years ago the additional beef available would bring the price down..

Do any of you notice what free trade agreements had done to our ability to purchase.. A loaf of bread was ten cents at the end of WW II, and that was a time when we were fed propogands that all of our wheat had to go to the boys fighting in germany .

The joke about the size of a nickle candy bar that is twice the size of today $1.29 candy bar...

The size of cans of beans or any other things on the store shelves. from 30 years ago...?????

The only cans I've studied for the past 20 years are on women and I'd have to say those are just as nice if not nicer than they were 20 years ago. But I did manage to make this comparison a few years ago.
When my wife and I were first married in 1972 my first job paid $400 per month. Out of that we made our car payment, and insurance, paid our rent, paid our utilities including phone, bought our food and still had enough money to drink a few beers and other forms of entertainment.
When my kids reached the same age they and most of their peers had to group together in one household, four or maybe six living together to cover the same expenses. In a lot of cases this was the same with poorer kids except they might share one vehicle between them and it would often go uninsured and things like a phone were beyond their means.

What I remember (like anybody cares)...

Hamburger in 1960 was 29¢ per lb and Ground Beef was 49¢.
Canned Veggies (11 - 15 oz size) were 19¢ as was a large 16 oz loaf of bread. I remember celery being 9¢ per bunch (or whatever it's called). Peanut butter was 29¢. Jelly? Well, we made our own from grapes in our back yard.
Eggs were 19¢ per dozen and milk was 39¢ per gallon.

In 1970 a can of Spam cost 99¢ and eggs were 69¢ per dozen. At the time I lived on fried Spam and eggs. A loaf of bread was 59¢ and milk was 89¢ and I weighed 145 lbs.

In 1972 I quit buying milk until it went back down under $1 per gallon. It never did, and I no longer t farted when I walked. In 1983 I quit buying cigarettes because they went over $1 a pack. I gained 70 lbs.

    I Remember I Remember

I bought my first house in 1957 for nothing down and $80 per month., Three bedrms, 1 bath.

In 1967 bought one for 23000. 1970 sold it for 23000. It was mansion, 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, dressing room, not a room in the house had a dimension less than 20 ft, except the baths and kitchen and breakfast rm.

1970 bought a new house in Modesto, CA, 1400 sq ft, 23000. Sold it in 1989 for 95,000, a quick distress sale. The one next door sold for 108,000 a few months earlier.

2004, visited Modesto, same house, 225,000.

Until 1985, I was able to run my house with 3 kids on 1200/mo.
Today, I barely get by on 2200/mo.

    Rents, house payments: 1957-1967...80/mo
    1967-1970...225/mo
    1970-1979...208/mo
    1979-1989...625/mo (refinance 15000 cash out)
    1989-1996...385/mo(800 sq ft apt.)
1996-2000...500/mo (portion of wf#3 house pmts
    2000-2004...768/mo (1180sq ft apt.)
    2004-2005...838/mo (rent increase)
    2005-2006...878/mo (rent increase)
    2006-2007...908/mo (rent increase)

Food prices: I worked in a grocery store 1951-1953. Still remember some prices, I was a checker and defacto Asst Mgr, but I was too young for them to give me the title and pay..they gave me gratis overtime instead.

    Coffee 48cents lb
    Tomato soup 11cents
    Saltines 48cents
    Sugar 48cents/lb
    Bread not sure 75cents
    Salt 13cents
Soda 1.25 for six (not sure)

The cans are standard sized #2 #2-1/2, #3, etc., and the sizes have been standardized since before I can remember. They are the same sizes (in the US) today.

My fearless and hopefully accurate contribution to illustrate the insane increase in cost of living. They want us all to live in the street and starve.

The cans are the same size?? They sure seem smaller. I cannot seem to find out for sure... I remember the size of a case of green beans, and today that case seems smaller.. I buy in large quanities.. I do not have any of the old cans. I do know that they play games with some things,,, such as coffee in the big can. a few years back they were all 39 oz not you better look on the can for they may be 32 or 34 oz and the same price.. Long ago the cans of veg. were advertised ans #2 , but you never see that designation used.. and I ask the grocery manager at Wal-Mart.. He had a real blank look,, so I changed the subject...

You have helped a lot. This is slowly comming together..

Don't take this as bragging, but my first job was .55 cents an hour,, but all the overtime I could work up.. BUT as I was working for two master photographers, and looking back I should have paid them... I would get off work, then run all the way to my next job (I was cross cuntry runner and in good shape) There I baked pies for deleivery the next morning to resturants. Then on the way home,, I stopped at a service station and did his books. I made a living, had enough extra to race boats.. Of course selling pictures of the boat races paid for that..

Now my daughter (40+) has to take an extra job in order to by gas to go to her first job,, at a carpet mill.

Imagine how much a can of corn will cost in like 2o2o. It might require a mortgage. That is if some disease doesn’t prevent you from going inside a bank.

When Shooter first started working for someone his goal was to make $1,000 a Month. His first job was minimum wage, in 1967. Once he graduated from college in 1974 it took him 4 years to get to $1,000 a month.

He bought his first house in 1973 for $13,000, sold it a year later for $25,000, and made more money from buying and selling his houses than he did working, until 1999.

I remember when I first started working, I made minimum wage, and I remember thinking that if only I could make double that much, I could afford to work part-time. Well, I found out that was not true. lol

Well, but are you better off now than then?

Shooters first house was 900 square feet. His current house is 3 times that. And cost 30 times as much.

His first car cost $500, used. Took him 3 years to pay it off. His current cars cost 100 times that new and he paid cash.

Absolutely! It was just my youthful naivety that made me think of my life in such simple terms. :)
I love my house, and my life now. I am a fortunate woman.

There was an interesting poll taken in the mid 5os that asked how much money people needed to feel secure and happy. The average answer was about twice as much as they had presently. A similar poll asked the same question in the mid 90s (and adjusted for inflation) and the answer again was about twice as much as they had presently.

    I guess it’s never enough.

There are pamlets that tell how much things cost by year. Also gives sport, and political news.
Can't recall what they are called. Something like, " How things were when you were born".
