The Republican Party is the party of shrinking demographics. The Republican Party knows it needs to hand onto power as long as it can by preserving the Electoral College, the Senate, gerrymandering, and voter suppression.

These methods cannot work forever. Eventually the dikes will break, and the blue wave will engulf the United States.

One problem facing the GOP is that it has become the party of older and lower income whites. These are dependent on Social Security and Medicare. The leaders of the GOP want to cut Social Security and Medicare payments to pay for their tax cuts for rich people and corporations.

Trump says whatever he thinks his audience wants to hear. This is because of his successful lifetime career as a con man. It means that he often contradicts himself.

One man who has had business deals with Trump has said, "No promise from him means anything unless it is written down with his signature on it, or recorded orally."

Shooter would be willing to bet that if the despicables had gotten their man(woman) into the oval office even though they had lost the popular vote they'd be singing the praises of the Electoral College and deplorables would we standing on the state house steps demanding a change.
    That's politics.
However, Shooter very much doubts that deplorables would be trying this end run around a constitutional convention.

Except the democrats have won all their elections by the popular vote. Its only the last two Republicans that have relied on that system to win.

It is also very telling how republicans love to shout "states rights" for their issues, but anything else is an end run around the constitution.

The electoral college is in the constitution, yes, but it says nothing about how the state's should implement it. That's the part that is the "state's rights" aspect.

It is an act of treason to remove the electoral college. Understanding why the Pre-Amble and the Bill of Rights were added after the Constitutional Convention.

At the same time, the Congress does not represent the make up of the U.S. population. The size of Congress, which also determines the size of the electoral college, has not been adjusted since 1911. Prior to that, Congress changed with regular intervals.

    Wait.
Then why the stink over the census every 10 years.
States get the number of representatives for the House based on census. In 1911 that was locked at 435 members. The number of representatives from each state is determined by the census, so while the total number of representatives doesn't change, the number of representatives from each state does. How does that not represent the make up of the US population??

I think may be , hopefully, this will make the people who don't vote wake up and realize . The real American vote does count . The foreigners in this country though , and the true to life , American's sit home and complain about the results. Maybe this will wake them up a little .

Trump changes his mind on Electoral College, now wants to keep it
In a not-totally-unexpected reversal of policy, President Trump, who before being elected president called the Electoral College “a disaster for democracy,” now says it’s “far better for the U.S.A.”

After Barack Obama in 2012 won reelection, Trump declared his win “a total sham and a travesty” and called for a revolution and march on Washington.

“The phoney electoral college made a laughing stock out of our nation,” he wrote indeleted tweets, and then added, “[Obama] lost the popular vote by a lot and won the election. We should have a revolution in this country!”

Trump was wrong; Obama actually won the popular vote over Republican Mitt Romney by 5 million votes, and carried the Electoral College, 332 to 206. In 2016, Trump lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by some 3 million, but carried the Electoral College with 304 votes. He has tried to exaggerate the significance of his victory by claiming the Electoral College is stacked in favor of Democrats, although most political scientists believe the opposite.

“I used to like the idea of the Popular Vote, but now realize the Electoral College is far better for the U.S.A.,” Trump wrote Tuesday night.

He likened the popular vote and Electoral College to “training for the 100 yard dash vs. a marathon.”

“The brilliance of the Electoral College is that you must go to many States to win,” hetweeted. “With the Popular Vote, you go to just the large States - the Cities would end up running the Country. Smaller States & the entire Midwest would end up losing all power - & we can't let that happen.”

This isn’t the first time Trump has had a change of heart. After his win in 2016, hetweeted, “The Electoral College is actually genius in that it brings all states, including the smaller ones, into play.”

However, his recent switch comes after Democrats, including presidential candidatesElizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke, have called for ending the Electoral College and choosing the president by popular vote.

“Come a general election, presidential candidates don’t come to places like Mississippi, they also don’t come to places like California or Massachusetts, because we’re not the battleground states,” Warren said at a CNN town hall on Monday.

“My view is that every vote matters, and the way we can make that happen is that we can have national voting and that means get rid of the Electoral College, and every vote counts,” she said to an extended ovation from the audience.

Because of the Electoral College, swing states like Florida and Ohio receive greater attention by presidential candidates. While states under the Constitution have the power to determine who gets their electoral votes in national elections, a majority of states give all their electoral votes to the presidential candidate who receives the most votes within that state.

Eliminating the Electoral College would require a constitutional amendment, which would need a two-thirds vote in both chambers of Congress and ratification by three-fourths of the states. But Democrats have proposed another option.

As of last week, 12 states that are mostly Democratic strongholds and the District of Columbia signed on to the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, pledging their Electoral College votes to whichever candidate wins the national popular vote. The bill would take effect if the law is passed by states controlling at least 270 votes, which is the figure needed to win the presidency. It currently has 181.

Trump is one of five presidents to win a presidential election while losing the popular vote. In 2000, Democrat Al Gore won by over half a million popular votes, but lost Florida in a disputed recount by a few hundred votes, and the presidency went to George W. Bush.

I really don't understand why we even need an electoral college. What's the point in voting when the majority is intentionally ignored? "There are too many people living in this state, so we're just going to disregard what you want." I don't care about states, a vote in one part of the country should be worth the exact same as a vote from any other part of the country. If Trump had won the popular vote, I could have lived with that. I'd be super pissed, because I hate Trump, but I'd be willing to accept that as the will of the people.

You probably should have paid closer attention in civics class.
We have the popular vote for all Federal elective positions except the President.
That's what the Electoral College is for.

It's based on the same concept that gave us the House of Representatives and Senate.

    1. Sage_of_the_Forlorn_Path
The popular vote should work for the president as well.

There's no reason why it shouldn't. If the majority of the country wants someone to be president and votes for them, what good reason could there be for that person to not be president? Trump becoming president despite losing the popular vote just proves that there is no point in voting at all, that the will of the people doesn't matter.

So, when the founders set up Congress the big debate was that the "big" states would decide everything and the "little" states would have no say.

On the other hand, why shouldn't the big states run the show?

Long story short, we ended up with a 2 house system, with the house delegates decided based on population and the Senate having 2 senators from each state.

    Balanced power.

So eventually we got the electoral college-- you can educate yourself on why, shooter is running short on time--- and states got EC delegates equal to the total of their representatives plus their 2 senators.

So, the point is, just as Congress is intended to reflect the US population, there is a check against big states running off with everything.

    Same with electing the president.

And we fuck with a system that has worked so well for so long only with caution, and for damn sure not just because people are butt hurt that their man(woman) lost.

    1. Sanity_is_Relative
The electoral college was not set up when the Constitution was first drafted, it was added through a constitutional convention over 20 years later and was not even ratified until 1804.

I already told you I don't care about states. There are forty million people in California and over three hundred million people in the whole country, so it's pretty damn obvious that California doesn't have the majority vote. If the majority of the country wants something, why does it matter what state they are in?

    3. Sanity_is_Relative
They use California as a way to frighten their uneducated base, trying to make them think that if we do away with a system that removes the power of our votes then we will all end up under the "communist regime" that is California.

How is it supposed to be fair to the voters to have their vote, the bulk of the popular vote, overturned and thrown out by a handfull of people that believed that their will should be placed above what the people want and voted for.

    Trump won.

Despicables lost, and now want to change the rules so their man(woman) can win.

What is it that makes despicables think changing whats worked for all these years just cause they lost is good for the country?

Oh. That's right. Fuck the country. Winning is the point.

      Hillary R. Clinton Democratic 65,845,063
That leaves only the electoral college over-riding the want and will of the people in order to enact their own desires.

So, who would that be again?
    The Russians?

Did you see the map of the US that showed how many counties trump won as opposed to clinton?

But, we don't elect our president based on counties, or land mass, or popularity, now do we?

We elect our president through the electoral college and the only reason, THE ONLY REASON you want to change it is because your man (woman) lost.

And that in shooters opinion is a damn dumb reason to change the constitution.

What I find so funny is that you to bitch at people for not responding to a post by a comment and instead posting an all new post like you just happen to be doing now, you know like a fucking gutless pussy that is trying to hide the idea that again you responded with nonsensical bullshit.
And I have been saying that the electoral college needed to be abolished for at least 2 decades. It served its place back when people would be in a hardship to have to leave the family farm to travel to go vote, but in this modern area that excuse is long gone, the idea of voting is as simple as go to a local poling place and vote as long as you are registered and have the legal right to vote. There should be almost no restrictions on voting other than registration and legal right. The people should make up the vote not the electoral college and not congress.

For all the people who fell asleep in civics class, and want to put a stop to the electoral college...

1: There are 3,141 counties in the United States. Trump won 2,626 of them. Clinton won 487.
2: There are 62 counties in New York State. Trump won 46 of them. Clinton won 16.
3: Clinton won the popular vote by approx. 1.5 million votes.
4: In the 5 counties that encompass NYC, (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Richmond & Queens) Clinton received well over 2 million more votes than Trump. (Clinton only won 4 of these counties; Trump won Richmond) Therefore these 5 counties alone, more than accounted for Clinton winning the popular vote of the entire country.
5: These 5 counties comprise 319 square miles. The United States is comprised of 3,797,000 square miles.
6: When you have a country that encompasses almost 4 million square miles of territory, it would be ludicrous to even suggest that the vote of those who inhabit a mere 319 square miles should dictate the outcome of a national election.
Large, densely populated Democrat cities (NYC, Chicago, LA, etc) don’t and shouldn’t speak for the rest of the country.
And this children, is WHY you have a Electoral College. It's a safety net so that EVERYONES vote counts!

The U.S. is based upon a union of individual States, the Individual States have the ultimate power.

The U.S. federal fucking government is in essence powerless and it not based upon a fucking democracy.

The federal fucking government is based upon a Constitutional Republic.

The federal fucking government is made up of representatives of the individual States.

The individual States have represented delegates and ultimately decide, not the population of said individual States.

As this also eliminates some election fraud.
