Up next: the week of April 9-15. A fairly typical week, by the numbers. Sixteen people accidentally shot themselves, eleven people were killed in gun accidents, nine kids were accidentally shot, six people accidentally fired guns they claimed they were cleaning or otherwise “inspecting,” four people were accidentally shot during their target practice (one more just couldn’t wait to get to the range, and was accidentally shot in the car on the way there), four people accidentally fired their weapons into neighboring properties (plus one more incident in which a passerby in golf cart was struck by a stray round), three people accidentally shot family members or significant others, and two people accidentally fired their weapons while shopping at neighborhood Walmart stores.

OK, that last item was a bit unusual. (But only a little bit.) We’ll get back to that in a moment. But first, some of the other, more unusual incidents of the week. First, a relatively well-publicized and tragic event from Forest Park, GA, in which a 13-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself while streaming his gunplay on Instagram Live. Second, an equally tragic incident from Fort Worth, TX—one which we’ve unfortunately seen more than a few times—in which a man shot and killed himself “while showing a friend how the safety on his gun worked.” I shouldn’t have to tell anyone that there are a million better ways to demonstrate how a gun’s safety works than by pointing it at your own or someone else’s head and pulling the trigger. Even pointing it at your own foot and pulling the trigger is better, though I would likewise counsel against it. But if you absolutely must demonstrate how a safety works, first, make sure you actually know how it works, and second, give yourself some margin for error if your demonstration really has to include pulling the trigger. Do your best to be sure the gun is pointed in a “safe” direction. One further reminder: if you’re in an apartment building, the units next door, or above and below you, do not count as “safe” directions. (See this week’s incident from Montebello, CA for further illustration of that point.)

One more safety tip, while we’re at it. Whether you’re an expert or a beginner taking classes to earn your concealed carry permit (in states where such training is even required), if you absolutely must spend additional time “practicing aiming [your] gun and pulling the trigger” but don’t have time to go all the way to the gun range to do it, one really great idea is to spend a moment making sure your weapon is not loaded. Also, if you’re going to practice both aiming and pulling the trigger, do not “aim” at your own leg. I do not know whether the person involved in this accident did, in fact, go on to earn her concealed carry permit. But I do know that it happened in Florida, so, you know, probably.

A few more final comments. One, just as a reminder of how convoluted stories that end in a GunFAIL can be, try making sense of the events of April 11th in Russellville, AR. None of what happened there makes much sense to me, except that the risk posed by adding a gun to that fact pattern seems extraordinary. That much seems obvious, even though I can’t make heads or tails out of the rest of it.

Next, the two accidental discharges inside Walmart stores illustrate some continuing problems with wider acceptance of citizens going about armed in daily life. The Conroe, TX incident illustrates how a moment of carelessness (or perhaps an entire gun-carrying life of carelessness that just happens to crystallize on one moment) can quickly spin way out of control. Luckily, not all the things that could have gone wrong in Conroe did go wrong. But someone made a very poor choice of carrying methods there, and dropped their weapon, leading to an accidental discharge inside the store. No one was hit, but at least one other shopper said of the incident, "It really freaked me out. For a second, I thought it was another mass shooting." I imagine that could cause some real problems in a place where a significant number of citizens are armed, and then suddenly become panicked and confused, then are perhaps further surprised to see several other armed strangers roaming the store with guns in hand. The second Walmart incident, in Sidney, OH, likewise leaves us with questions. It’s not entirely clear from reports whether this particular store location prohibits firearms on the premises, but most reports do make note of state’s new law, which “overrules private business owners from banning guns on their property as long as the person is a CCW license holder and locks the weapon in his or her personal vehicle.” That would be much more relevant if guns were prohibited in the store, and this gun owner brought his in, regardless. But it’s just not clear. Still, we can be pretty sure that discharging the weapon was a problem, since Sidney police confiscated it afterwards. Yet another gun carried for “safety” that instead ended up endangering everyone nearby.

Lastly, there’s this week’s title story, from Crawford County, KS. I don’t think it needs any explaining, other than to point out that though hunters and others are fairly often mistaken for game and shot, this is a particular danger in turkey hunting. Apparently, turkey hunters don’t wear blaze orange gear, and further, they appear from the reports to do more to disguise themselves as turkeys to lure game than the hunters of other species do. I think the results are somewhat predictable, but you may disagree. I’ve never heard of anyone accidentally shot while buying one of the turkeys widely available in stores, but I suppose both that some people like a challenge, and perhaps we just haven’t waited long enough, yet.

(LINK REMOVED) , 4/09/17: Neighbors repeatedly described the people living in the Fountain home where a young girl was shot in the head Sunday as "a nice family." All the children played together on the "quiet" and "close" block of Progress Drive, they said, some declining to be named. Brittney Frost, who lives across the street, said she took her 4-year-old daughter over to the couple's home to play around Halloween when the family turned their garage into a haunted house for children. "They had a cauldron of candy and were great with the kids in a potentially scary situation," Frost said. But parents said they were shaken after one of the couple's children, their oldest daughter, 6, was shot in the head Sunday in what Fountain police are calling an accidental shooting. The child was in critical but stable condition Monday following surgery, Fountain police said. The shooting happened about 5 PM at 782 Progress Drive. One neighbor said the girl's parents tried to drive her to the hospital themselves but found an ambulance along the way. No details are being released while police continue to investigate, according to Sgt. Dean Gilbertsen. He also declined to say whether they will recommend charges in the shooting. No charges had been filed as of Monday. "We will release more information as we can," Gilbertsen said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/09/17: An Orting-area man escaped serious injury Sunday night when he shot himself in the hand while clearing his gun, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. Medics and deputies responded a little after 9:30 PM to the 14900 block of 147th Street Court East, just north of Orting, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. The man was talking with medics and explained what happened, Troyer said, and is expected to be OK.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/09/17: Indianapolis Metropolitan police are investigating a fatal shooting on the west side of Indianapolis that police are calling accidental. Officers were called to the 2300 block of Raceway Road on the west side around 7:15 PM Sunday. Police say there was a party or gathering at the residence. Officers arrived to find a 24-year-old woman who'd been shot. She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. "We’re trying to figure out exactly where the gun came from, who’s involved, who owned the gun. All of those items and all of those pieces of information will come to surface through the investigation," said Officer Aaron Hamer with IMPD. Police said officers were called to the home in response to disturbances before the shooting occurred. Police believe a 17-year-old shot and killed the woman on accident. The case remains under investigation and the Marion County Prosecutor's Office will decide if the teen will face charges.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/09/17: UPDATE: On Tuesday morning, Chattanooga Police announced that the 13-year-old died from his injuries Tuesday evening. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Police say the investigation continues. ORIGINAL STORY: A 16-year old called 911 pleading for help, after his brother was accidentally shot in the head. Police say the teen is now in critical, but stable condition at Enlarger. Monday, NewsChannel 9 got a copy of the brother's call for help. In the tape, he describes his brother's heavy breathing and the wound he says is near the 13-year-old's ear. On the other side of the wall from where the call was made, Kendasia Lawrence said her family didn't hear any gunshots. Police arrived at her duplex shortly after her kids came inside for the evening. "My sons and nephews were just out there playing with the little boy," she said. At the end of 911 call recording, the caller has a conversation about the gun with one of the first responders in the house. He told him, "We found it and we were just playing with it and then it went off." The Safe Tennessee Project tracks unintentional shootings. Sunday's makes 6 this year in the state. Director Beth Joslin Roth says this case is unique because the boys say they found the gun somewhere outside the home. "That's rare," she said. "What we see much more often is the scenario where a child picks up a loaded gun that is not stored properly in a home or a vehicle and fires it." Still, she says every accidental shooting involving a child is the result of an adult being irresponsible with a gun. "That's even the case in this scenario," Roth said. "We can assume that it was probably perhaps a criminal that threw a gun out of a car or something." Police are working to figure out exactly where the boys found the gun and to determine if it was used in other crimes. Police telll us they are waiting to talk to the injured teen to corroborate what he says happened leading up to the shooting. Safe Tennessee Project says this situation highlights the need for parents should talk to their kids about gun safety, even if they don't have a firearm in the house.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/09/17: An 89-year-old woman was grazed by a stray bullet, but not injured, while riding in a golf cart beside her son, Rowan County officials said. Officials are continuing to investigate the Sunday incident. The Rowan County Sheriff’s Department says four people were target shooting at a home at 1485 Cannon St. about 4:15 PM Sunday. At the same time, Etta Poole was riding in a golf cart with her son, Karry Broadway, in a wooded area near Lower Stone Church Road. The bullet went through the back of the seat, grazed Poole on the back and fell to the floor of the golf cart. Poole was cut and was treated by Rowan County emergency responders at the scene. She was not taken to a hospital. Broadway spoke with the people who were shooting to let them know that he had contacted law enforcement, reports said. Officials said alcohol was not involved in the incident. All four people who had been target shooting stayed on the scene until deputies arrived and were cooperative, the said. No charges have been filed.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/09/17: A young man was shot in the arm the other night while he and two friends were smoking marijuana at a mobile home park in south Bibb County, authorities said. Jonathon Moore, whose right arm was struck by a bullet from a .38-caliber revolver, was already at the Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins when Bibb sheriff’s investigators learned of the shooting. The shooting happened just after 10 PM while Moore, 24, and two other men were at North Park Manor trailer park two miles north of the Houston County line, across Ga. 247 from Middle Georgia Regional Airport. One of the men there, Alec Troutman, 19, of Warner Robins, told the police that he had pulled his .38-caliber pistol to show it to Moore, who wanted to see it, a sheriff’s report said. “Mr. Troutman stated that as he went to hand the revolver to Mr. Moore, the hammer engaged causing it to shoot a round into Mr. Moore’s arm,” the report noted. Troutman told investigators that he and another guy rushed Moore to the hospital. According to the report, Moore explained that he and his friends were “smoking marijuana and he wanted to see the gun Mr. Troutman had with him,” and that after he was shot “he began to black out and that’s when his friends” took him to the hospital. Moore said the shooting was “an accident” and, the report added, the other guys “are like brothers to him.” No charges were filed.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/09/17: A four-year-old child is getting emergency medical treatment right now, after being shot. It happened just after 4:00 PM in the 4700 block of 13th Avenue North in Birmingham. The Birmingham Police Department says two children were playing in a pickup truck, which had a loaded gun inside. One child picked up the gun, and it fired, striking the four-year-old. The victim is a boy, and he was sent to Children's Hospital for treatment. The Birmingham Police says the child has life-threatening injuries, but he is in stable condition. Three adults have been detained for questioning. UPDATE: Birmingham police say no charges are expected after a 3-year-old accidentally shot a 4-year-old while playing with a gun found inside a truck. The 4-year-old, who suffered organ damage, is in stable condition after undergoing surgery Sunday. "He still has a long road to recovery," Birmingham Police Lt. Sean Edwards said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/10/17: The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting which occurred in the 16000 block of Bud Odom Rd in Citronelle. Officials say at approximately 1:45 AM, a female homeowner shot an acquaintance after mistaking him for a burglar after he entered the residence unannounced. The 35-year-old man remains in a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They say this appears to be an accidental shooting.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/10/17: A week after a teen’s accidental shooting death was streamed onto Instagram, Forest Park police arrested a juvenile they said gave the 13-year-old the gun. Officials say Malachi Nasi Hemphill of Forest Park, accidentally shot himself April 10 at his home on Pineridge Court, Maj. Chris Matson said. Hemphill’s mother, Shaniqua Stephens, said she heard a loud bang, went upstairs and found her son shot, Channel 2 Action News reported. Hemphill’s camera phone was recording onto Instagram Live at the time. Authorities have not released the name of the juvenile accused of giving Hemphill the 9mm semi-automatic pistol and said he was charged with “numerous offences.” Former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal offered to pay for Hemphill’s funeral and said he sympathized with the boy’s mom. "No mother should have to go through this,” O’Neal said in a statement. “I can only imagine the pain that she and all of Malachi’s family must be feeling. I just wanted to do what I could to help them at such a terrible time." No details on the funeral have been released.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/10/17: The child of a Clayton County police officer fired the cop's service weapon inside a parking garage last week in Sandy Springs. An officer with the Sandy Springs Police Department responded to discharge of a firearm call at 1 Glenlake Parkway around 7:41 AM Monday, April 10. The officer arrived and spoke with Clayton County officer Welkind Saint-Jean, who recounted the incident to authorities. Saint-Jean, a 30-year-old Riverdale resident, said he arrived at the parking garage with his son, the incident report released by Sandy Springs police said. Saint-Jean parked his vehicle, and his son got out of his car seat and climbed into the front passenger seat. While the officer was exiting the vehicle, "his son accessed the glove compartment and retrieved his service weapon," the incident report released by the department states. "His son was able to remove the gun from the holster and fire the weapon," the officer wrote. The bullet went through the front windshield and "made contact" with the roof of the garage, which is made of concrete. Bullet fragments were also found lying next to the right side of the vehicle and a shell casing was discovered on the front passenger seat. The child, who had a small bruise on his right cheek, did not need any medical attention. Clayton County police detectives and the deputy chief also responded to the scene. The incident remains under investigation. Clayton County police spokesperson Sgt. Ashanti Marbury said the agency is "examining" the incident, and will require Saint-Jean to undergo additional training on safely securing his weapon.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/10/17: Orange County deputy sheriffs say a 15-year-old girl was accidentally shot after a drug deal, not while she and her friends were on their way to buy doughnuts, as originally thought, according to a report released Monday. Ramsys Cruz Abreu, 22, was arrested on charges of manslaughter, failure to report a death and possession of cannabis. Deputies say he supplied a gun to a 16-year-old girl who killed Melanie Mesen Medina. According to deputies, Cruz Abreu drove the girls to sell marijuana the night of April 10. A sheriff’s report originally said they were going to Krispy Kreme, with the 16-year-old in the back seat and Melanie in the front. After the drug deal, Cruz Abreu was counting his money and told the 16-year-old to get a gun out of a case because he was scared of getting robbed, deputies said. According to the report, he told the girl to “shoot if anyone tried to do so.” The girl took the gun out of the case and put it on her lap. When she was moving the gun case out of the way, the gun fell. She reached for it and accidentally pulled the trigger, hitting her friend in the neck and killing her, according to deputies. They drove to Ziegler Road near Orange Blossom Trail and dumped her body, where it was found the next morning, deputies say. Deputies said it was “culpable negligence” for Cruz Abreu to give the girl a gun. “Ramsys Cruz Abreu engaged in a course of conduct that showed a reckless disregard for human life,” the report states. “These actions by Ramsys Cruz Abreu set in motion the course of events that led to the death of Melanie Medina.” Deputies received a Crimeline tip that led to Cruz Abreu’s arrest April 13 as he drove away from a home on Cypress Woods Drive, near Kirkman and Conroy roads. Melanie had been an eighth-grader at Corner Lake Middle School before her parents withdrew her days before her death, Orange County Public Schools officials said. A Crimeline tip led deputies to Cruz Abreu. He was initially arrested April 13 and charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree felony, but the charge was dropped after detectives ruled the shooting accidental. He admitted to dumping Melanie’s body, deputies said. The 16-year-old will not be charged because the facts of the case “clearly indicate the shooting was accidental and not intentional,” deputies wrote. Melanie was living with Cruz Abreu after getting kicked out of her house by her mother.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/10/17: A 69-year-old Vero Beach man who was shot and injured by a malfunctioning gun at a gun range Monday afternoon was treated and released from a hospital, officials said. Palm Bay police said the firearm accident happened at the Port Malabar Rifle and Pistol Club, 610 Hurley Blvd. S.W. Martin Byrnes was setting down a gun when it fired several times, police Lt. Mike Bandish said. One of the bullets struck Byrnes in the shoulder, he said. Byrnes was flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne and released Tuesday, police said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/10/17: A man shot himself in the hand April 10 while inspecting his gun at his home in the 5600 block of East Melody Way, Castle Rock. He was in bed after dinner inspecting his pistol but forgot to clear the chamber. It went off. His wife took him to the hospital. No one else was hurt. He was ticketed for discharging a gun in city limits.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/10/17: A male died Monday in south Fort Worth after reportedly shooting himself in the head while showing a friend how the safety on his gun worked. Officers were dispatched about 5 PM to a home in the 4800 block of Madyson Ridge Drive, according to a police report. A 911 caller at the home reported that his friend was holding the gun to his own head when he pulled the trigger and it discharged, said officer Jimmy Pollozani, police spokesman. Detectives were still investigating Monday night and could not confirm the 911 caller’s account. The victim, whose name and age had not been released, died at the home, Pollozani said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/11/17: The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is investigating an accidental shooting inside a Walmart in The Woodlands. A single shot was fired in the store at 3040 College Park sometime between 10 and 11 AM. No one was hurt. Police say the bullet hit a light fixture. Customers described hearing the gunshot. "I don't know if it hit the ground or not, but it slipped and it banged and it went off. It was a good, loud noise," James McGowan said. "It scared me like crazy, and I have a little baby. I was just thankful she was in the car with her grandma and wasn't in the store with us," Kiki McGowan said. "It really freaked me out. For a second, I thought it was another mass shooting." Authorities describe the situation as an accidental discharge of a gun, but the circumstances surrounding it are not yet known. The scene remains under investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/11/17: Police said a man was arrested Tuesday after he accidently fired a shotgun into a woman's apartment. Kawa Faraj was booked into jail for deadly conduct by discharging a firearm. Police were called at 5 AM Tuesday to Ridgeview Apartments where a woman told them she thought someone had broken into her residence. Investigators say she had not been burglarized, but during the investigation found a bullet hole in her wall. Police said after that, Faraj, her neighbor, admitted to police that he accidently shot his gun toward her unit. No one was hurt.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/11/17: UPDATE 5:15 PM—According to Moore police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis, after detectives spoke with witnesses, it was determined that the shooting was a result of an accidental discharge. He said the bullet went through a wall and struck the woman who was in another room. ORIGINAL—According to Moore police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis, a woman was admitted into an emergency room at a hospital in Moore today suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Lewis said the shooting occurred at a home in the 2600 Block of N. Nottingham Way in Moore. Lewis said Moore police detectives are on the scene interviewing witnesses. The woman's injuries were reported to not be life-threatening.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/11/17: A 61-year-old Mandan man accidentally fired his gun, sending a bullet on an adventure through his neighbor's trailer on Tuesday afternoon. The .44 magnum handgun discharged while the man was cleaning it in his trailer on the 200 block of Ninth Avenue Southeast around 3 PM, according to Mandan Police. The bullet traveled out his window, through the neighbor's window, blinds, television, front door and BBQ grill propane tank, before finally coming to a rest in the grill, police said. No one was home at the neighbor's house, and no one was injured. The case has been forwarded to the Morton County State's Attorney for potential charges. No one has been arrested.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/11/17: A man who claimed he was shot leaving his Beaverton apartment Tuesday night actually shot himself, police said. The man, who was not identified, suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital. Initially, Beaverton police believed he had been shot by someone he knew. After about an hour and a half, they determined the truth. Their emailed update to reporters said, simply: "SELF INFLICTED GUNSHOT WOUND. STORY WAS MADE UP BY THE SUBJECT." The shooting was reported shortly before 8:30 PM at the 12000 block of Longhorn Lane, near Southridge High School.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/11/17: Christopher Lynn Baird, 25 of Russellville, appeared in a felony bond hearing before District Court Judge Don Bourne on Wednesday, April 12, following his arrest by the Russellville Police Department. According to the report, on Tuesday, April 11, at approximately 7:30 PM, RPD officers responded to Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in reference to a patient who had sustained a gunshot wound. Upon the arrival of officers, they made contact with the emergency room staff who advised that police the victim, Robby Brooks, had been dropped off at the emergency room doors by an unknown person who had left the scene. The officers were advised that Brooks had been shot through the top of his left hand and into his left thigh. After obtaining the information, officers spoke to Brooks who stated an unknown person shot him. Brooks advised that he was walking home to an address on East Gum Street from the Super 8 Motel after seeing a friend, and as he reached the area of East Gum Street near Highway 7 North, an unknown man in an unknown vehicle shot him. Brooks said he didn't see anything because he had his head down looking at his phone. A few minutes later, Brooks told police that he was picked up by an unknown male driving an unknown vehicle and he was taken to the emergency room. Additional RPD officers made contact with Brooks' mother at her residence located on East Gum Street. Brooks' mother told the officers that her son took her motorized scooter earlier in the day and had not returned. Brooks' mother also stated that the last time she talked to her son, he had advised her that he was at the Super 8 motel. Officers at the emergency room were advised of the information Brooks' mother had shared with them and then they asked Brooks where his mom's scooter was. Brooks told the officers that he had parked the scooter in Chris Baird's driveway and although he didn't know the address, he stated that Baird's house was located west of his mother's house. Brooks said that his mother would know where Baird's house is. Officers on East Gum Street located Baird's house and as they arrived at the residence they located a scooter parked behind a trailer in the driveway. The officers also observed several blood droplets on the driveway, coming from the door. After attempting to make contact with someone inside the residence, their attempts were unsuccessful. At that time, officers taped off the area surrounding the home and a crime scene was set up. Officers on East Gum Street kept the Crime Scene secured until a search warrant could be obtained and executed. The officers also contacted a RPD Sergeant and updated him about the situation. After receiving the update, the sergeant responded to the emergency room at Saint Mary's and made contact with Brooks. While speaking to the sergeant, Brooks told him a different story than what he had reported to the first arriving officers. Brooks advised that he rode his mother scooter to Chris Baird's house, then walked to the Super 8 motel. When he arrived back at Baird's residence, Brooks advised that he went into Baird's room and they were accompanied by an unknown Hispanic male. Brooks said when he entered Baird's room, he saw a black "Glock" style semi-automatic handgun that was laying on the bed. The Hispanic male picked the handgun to look at it and he accidentally shot him. Brooks continued to state that the man then put him in a green car, drove him to the emergency room and dropped him off. Officers on East Gum Street continued to keep the Crime scene secure, but at approximately 1 AM, while an officer was holding the back of the residence, he saw someone opening the back door very slowly. The officer reported that when he could see the man's face, he ordered him out of the house and to lay on the ground where he could see his hands. The man was then identified as Chris Baird's father. The officer asked him if anyone else was in the house and he stated Chris was. After officers ordered Chris Baird out of the house, both father and son were transported to the Russellville Police Department where they were questioned. Baird corroborated Brooks' story, and told police the Hispanic man, Carlos, lived near University and East O Street. Officers began to patrol the area in search of the Hispanic subject's car and at approximately 3 AM, officers located the car that was described to be a light green 2008 Nissan Sentra. Upon locating the vehicle, the officer looked inside and noticed a blue hat matching the description of the hat Brooks had been wearing sitting in the passenger seat. The officer also noticed a spot on the seat that appeared to be blood. The car was then towed and taken in as evidence. After confirming the Nissan Sentra was the car that Carlos was driving, Baird was transported to the Pope County Detention Center and a felony hold was placed on him for Possession of a Firearm by Certain Persons.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/11/17: A 9-year-old girl and her father were injured in an apparent accidental shooting overnight in Stockbridge. Henry County police said the father was cleaning his weapon inside a home in the 100 block of Bob White Drive. The gun went off with a single bullet, striking both the father and his daughter. The girl was hit in the leg, and the man was struck in the hand. Paramedics rushed both victims to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/12/17: A woman in the 11400 block of 63rd Lane North was practicing aiming her gun and pulling the trigger when the gun discharged, hitting her in the right leg. She told the deputy who came to the scene that she is taking firearms classes to get her concealed weapons permit. The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/12/17: An 18-year-old man who admitted to police he was playing with a gun before it went off Wednesday morning, killing a sleeping 17-year-old Sacramento boy, was charged Friday with involuntary manslaughter, authorities said. Besides the manslaughter count, Marco Palma Cruz was also charged with felony discharge of a firearm with gross negligence. He is accused of killing Luis Urquidez, a friend of his, who was visiting him at his home in the 800 block of East 18th Street. According to court documents, Palma Cruz has admitted to police he was playing with a semi-automatic pistol about 7:14 AM Wednesday when the gun went off and a bullet hit a sleeping Urquidez. He said it was an accident. The boy died at 11:40 AM at a hospital. Palma Cruz and other people at the home initially gave conflicting accounts to police about what happened and someone took the gun from the house. But after extensive questioning, homicide investigators eventually were able to determine what happened and Palma Cruz admitted his involvement. The gun was also recovered.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/12/17: A teenage girl remained hospitalized in critical condition on Friday, two days after she was shot by her neighbor in what was believed to be an accidental shooting at an apartment complex, police said. The suspected accidental shooting took place shorty after 4 PM on Wednesday in the 200 block of North 6th Street, Montebello police Lt. Larry Jackson said. Police responded to reports of a shooting and encountered a teenage girl suffering from a gunshot wound, he said. “Preliminary investigation revealed the neighbor was manipulating a firearm in his apartment,” the lieutenant said. The handgun went off, sending a bullet through the wall separating the apartments, and striking the girl in the abdomen. Rescuers took the wounded teen to a hospital, where she was listed in critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery, Jackson said. The neighbor, a man, was not arrested as the investigation continued, he said. The man attempted to help the injured girl and called 911 immediately after the shooting. Once complete, detectives will turn over their findings to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/12/17: Authorities say a hunter accidentally shot his brother and a friend after mistaking them for wild turkeys in southeast Kansas. The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism says the victims were shot in face and body on April 12. Crawford County Sheriff Dean Peak says the shooting was ruled an accident. Peak says the victims were hit by shotgun pellets and are expected to survive. The victims are at the University of Arkansas Medical Center in Fayetteville, which isn't releasing their conditions. The wildlife department's game warden, Jim Bussone, tells the Wichita Eagle (http://bit.ly/2onxtJE ) the three men were hiding behind preserved turkey tail fans, which are used to disguise hunters, but ended up hunting each other while making turkey calls to lure the animals. Bussone says the shooter broke several hunting safety rules, including shooting at movement.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/12/17: A 42-year old man accidentally shot himself near 95th Circle and West Center Road on Wednesday afternoon. The man’s wounds were not life-threatening. But, police said, he was a convicted felon—and that means it was illegal for him to possess the semiautomatic handgun he was carrying. Officers responded to a report of a shooting at 2:45 PM, said Lt. Kyle Steffen of the Omaha Police Department and found the man. He was suffering from a gunshot wound to his “lower extremities,” Steffen said, though he appeared to have walked a few blocks from where he had been struck. He initially provided little information to police, but later admitted to officers he had shot himself. Police eventually located the weapon.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/13/17: An Illinois man was arrested after his gun went off and wounded a friend in a casino parking garage, police said. Atlantic City Police learned of the shooting when the victim, Kevin Neeld, 19, of Hamilton Township sought medical care for a gunshot wound at the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Galloway Township on Thursday. Police say that Neeld and a friend, Joseph Crouch, 20, of Alton, Ill., were in a vehicle on the top floor of the parking garage at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino when Crouch pulled out a handgun, accidentally discharged the weapon and struck Neeld. As Neeld was being driven to the hospital, police day, Crouch allegedly threw the gun out of the vehicle in the garage, authorities said. The gun was later recovered by Tropicana security and turned over to police. Neeld was listed in critical condition, police said. The did not say in what part of his body he was shot. Crouch was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility. The two men were described by police as friends.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/13/17: The cause of a Madison County man’s death has been ruled an accidental shooting, the sheriff’s office announced today. William Burton Vickers, 56, of Hazel Green, was found dead Thursday after sustaining an accidental gunshot wound to the abdomen, Madison County sheriff’s Capt. Michael Salomonsky said. Investigators found Vickers at his home on the 100 block of Atwilder Drive around 9:30 AM. The sheriff’s office began investigating because the circumstances of Vickers’ death were “odd,” Salomonsky said at the time. Vickers’ body was taken to the Department of Forensic Sciences lab in Huntsville for an autopsy. Based on evidence and witness statements, investigators determined Vickers shot himself in the lower abdomen, Salomonsky said. Vickers(LINK REMOVED)were held this past weekend. Additional details haven’t been released.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/13/17: A Shell Point man wanted to clean his gun Thursday evening, so he pulled the .22-caliber pistol from the top of his bedroom dresser. The gun slipped from his hands. He reached down and tried to snag it before it hit the ground. He missed. The pistol hit the floor, “the gun went off and shot his hand,” according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report released Friday. The man told police he had no idea he was shot until a few moments later when “he saw blood coming from his hand,” the report said. While all that was happening, a woman was in the kitchen cooking crabs. She reported to deputies that she heard the gunshot but “did not think much of it.” A relative drove the injured man to Beaufort Memorial Hospital where he was interviewed by deputies, according to the report. Deputies searched the man’s room but found no sign of the gun.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/13/17: An accidental shooting that caused injuries was reported in Manatee County Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred at 5200 14th Street West in Bradenton. Amaris Peralta, 26, and Jimmy Hernandez-Pantojo, 19, were driving in her vehicle in Bradenton to go shoot their firearms. As Hernandez-Pantojo was handling the firearm, he dropped it in his lap, causing it to discharge the loaded bullet. It struck Peralta in the left side. They drove to the hospital to seek treatment for the non-life threatening injury. The investigation is ongoing.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/13/17: A Grants city councilman is dead after what appears to be a shooting accident during target practice. The Cibola County Sheriff says 64-year-old Eddie Dickens was out shooting off Lobo Canyon Road Thursday afternoon. They say when he didn’t come home, Dickens’ family went looking for him. They found him with a single gunshot wound to the chest. “We really feel for his wife Shirley and his boys,” said Jose Rodriguez. People in Grants are still learning the tragic news the beloved councilor passed away. “I was flabbergasted, it just about threw me,” said Rodriguez, who’s lived one house down from Dickens for many years. He said Eddie Dickens would walk past his home everyday with his dog, to the park at the end of the street. “If somebody was gone from the house and it was garbage collection day or you know he’d go out there and put the garbage cans out for them,” said Rodriguez. Cibola County Sheriff, Tony Mace, said this is devastating. “It’s a devastating event for our community. Mr. Dickens was active in the high school, a great teacher the kids talked about him a lot,” said Tony Mace. He said when his investigators arrived to the scene on Lobo Canyon Road, they found a new box of ammo, four bullets missing from the box and three shots in the target, his cleaning kit was also nearby. Mace said they believe the gun malfunctioned. “Maybe tried to clear that malfunction and somehow the weapon discharged, striking him in the chest,” said Mace. Deputies say they found Dickens’ gun in pieces. Those who knew Dickens say it’s a tragedy and they’re thinking of his family. He leaves behind a wife, two sons and six grandchildren. Funeral arraignments have not yet been announced.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/13/17: A man is facing charges after he accidentally shot himself and then lied to officers about how the injury happened, according to police. Police said around 2:30 PM Thursday, they got a call about a man who had been hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his leg. The man, 18-year-old Phillip Terry, told police he was walking near downtown when a dark sedan drove by and someone inside fired a shot at him. Police examined the injury and determined it was unlikely he had been shot as he described. They investigated and determined Terry was playing with a handgun when it accidentally fired, shooting him in the leg. Terry was charged with prohibited use of weapons and false reporting, according to police.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/13/17: A young boy has been killed in what authorities believe to be an accidental shooting in west Harris County. The shooting happened at a home in the 21300 block of Finbury Oaks Lane. According to officials at the scene with the Harris County Sheriff's Office, an 11-year-old boy was playing with a gun when he was fatally shot. The boy was home alone at the time, and his parents returned home and found him, authorities said. An investigation is underway. The case will go to a grand jury to determine if the parents could face charges.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/13/17: A Lubbock juvenile is being held at the Lubbock County Juvenile Justice Center on charges of aggravated assault after a gun he was cleaning went off, shooting another juvenile in the leg. It happened around 7:45 PM in the 3200 block of 33rd Street on Thursday. The victim told police he was at his friend's house playing video games while his friend was cleaning a gun. The victim told police his friend did not realize there was a bullet in the chamber. The gun went off and shot the victim in the leg. His friend and his friend's mother took the victim to the hospital where he was treated and released. The juvenile initially told police he found the gun in an alleyway without a magazine and thought it was not loaded. He then told police he bought the gun from a friend, according to the police report. He told police he was "playing around" with the gun and it accidentally went off. The juvenile was placed under arrest and the victim was released from the hospital.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/14/17: A shooting thought to have occurred near a dollar store on North Main Street Friday turned out to be an accidental shooting in another location. According to the Baytown Police, two friends and the victim, a 24-year-old Baytown man, were at a residence on Ft. Worth Street smoking marijuana and playing with a .22 caliber rifle when one of the friends accidently shot the victim.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/14/17: A Brownwood man told police he was the victim of a drive-by shooting last week, but police believe the man accidentally shot himself—and the man may be charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, Brownwood Assistant Police Chief James Fuller said. The 22-year-old man was shot in his right hip area Friday afternoon and was not seriously injured, Fuller said. According to a report by Cpl. Zane Taylor: Taylor responded to a weapons offense at 5:54 PM in the 1600 block of Waco and arrived to see a man he knew lying on a driveway. Two neighbors were standing near the man, who was calm and did not show signs of distress unless there was movement involving his right hip area. The man told Taylor he was walking along Belle Plain going east when when a westbound pickup drove by, and a male shot him from the passenger window. The man said he was across the street from the Bostick’s auto dealer and the pickup was traveling in the outside lane toward the lake. Taylor told the man his story didn’t make sense because the passenger side of the vehicle would be on the other side of the road from him. The man quickly responded that he was just walking down the street and did not actually see the shooting, but heard it and then looked up. The man said he actually has a lot of enemies and did not know who it might have been. The man’s shirt had burnt black residue and a hole in the same area where he had been shot. Officers located a couple of picatinny type rails which are commonly used on firearms so other accessories can be attached. Officers also located eight .22 caliber rifle shells in one of the man’s pockets. Lifeguard Ambulance transported the man to Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/14/17: A Pueblo police officer who fired at a dog he believed was attacking him accidentally grazed a rookie who was among officers responding to a call from the pit bull’s owners, according to a police report. The incident began early April 14 when Leslie Hanson, 39, owner of the 2-year-old dog named Crios and her boyfriend heard a noise at the rear of their home. They thought someone was trying to break in. Her boyfriend walked out of the home. Hanson grabbed her gun, followed him outside, called 911, and reported an attempted break-in, she said Thursday. They saw her neighbor’s son, who had fallen onto a trash can before a gate fell on top of him. He “was high on something,” Hanson said, and she put the gun away as he flailed around. She then told the 911 operator she was going to put the phone down and help her boyfriend with the neighbor, identified as David Martinez, 32, in the police report. Martinez was incoherent and appeared to be trying to “get at his mother,” who had come out of her house with her husband. Officer Seth Jensen, who wrote the report, and another officer, got him under control and were taking him to a patrol car, when two other officers, identified as Officer Diaz and Recruit Officer Steffani, arrived. As Diaz and Steffani arrived, the report said, a large, gray pit bull “ran out of the residence. … As the dog exited the house, it began growling aggressively and then attempted to attack Officer Diaz.” Hanson said the dog had gotten through a dog gate and through a door into her yard on Cypress Street but was walking, looking for her and not acting aggressively. According to the report, Diaz backpeddled, drew his pistol, and fired seven rounds at the dog. The dog collapsed in front of a nearby home. Jensen noticed that Steffani was limping and asked if he had been shot. Steffani answered that he might have been grazed by a bullet. He was taken to a hospital and treated for a slight burn mark, the report said. Hanson said she has post-traumatic-stress disorder and that Crios was a service dog. “He was not running; he was walking. I didn’t hear him growl or bark. I’m not saying that he didn’t. I’m not saying that I don’t agree that dogs are sometimes aggressive. The officer could have used pepper spray, Tazed him, shot him once. It would have been OK.” But firing seven shots at the dog, was “not OK.” A veterinarian later euthanized Crios. Police called the incident unfortunate in a statement posted on the department’s Facebook page. “The Pueblo Police Department recognizes the incident as unfortunate but realizes the officer exercised the best option available to him at the time, as the incident happened within seconds.”

(LINK REMOVED), 4/14/17: Shelby County Sheriff's Office said a 12-year-old was accidentally shot by a 13-year-old on Friday afternoon. The shooting happened around 1:45 PM at a home on Grand Pines Drive near East Holmes Road. Investigators said four children were at home alone during the time of the shooting. One child was able to get a gun. Deputies said the children started playing with the pistol and a 12-year-old boy was shot in the arm. Investigators said the shooting could have been prevented if the parent had locked up the gun. Authorities said the gun was left out in the open, giving the children easy access to it. The grandfather of one of the four boys at the house said they were playing basketball at the time and then somehow a gun got involved. "No, they are not bad boys. Mischievous does come up in a child, but for the most part everybody is good. Everybody is good," grandfather Sean Lawrence said. Deputies said this should serve as a reminder for all parents to take extra precautions. "The real lesson is if you have a weapon, lock it up," said SCSO spokesperson Earl Farrell. "All these young guys would have been spending a Good Friday playing together if the weapon wouldn't have been left out - where they could get a hold of it." The child is in stable condition and was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. The child is expected to be okay.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/14/17: A Dallas County 19-year-old was allegedly accidentally shot and killed by another 19-year-old Friday morning in the same vehicle. Rufus Williams Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Captain Mike Granthum with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. Ratravious Sanders has been charged with murder and is currently being held at the Dallas County Jail without bond. Granthum said Sanders will have a bond hearing sometime early this week for what he called a “reckless murder.” The shooting happened between 11-11:30 AM Friday morning in the Tyler and Sardis area near the intersection of County Road 67 and Industrial Drive. Granthum said Williams was riding in the front passenger seat of a car with his girlfriend, who was driving, and two others in the back seat. According to Granthum, Sanders was sitting behind Williams and was trying to shoot a handgun out the window. “They were riding down the road, and [Sanders] had recently got a gun. He wanted to show off the gun, so he was going to shoot it out the window, and the gun failed to go off,” Granthum said. “So he’s in the backseat trying to get the gun to fire, trying to find out why it malfunctioned, and the gun went off.” Granthum said the bullet went through the back of Williams’ seat, striking him in the back and exiting through his chest. “They were friends,” Granthum said. “There was no arguing. They’re not enemies. It was a tragic situation.” Granthum said Sanders was a senior at Selma High School, and that Williams was dating his sister. Granthum said the gun, which is a 9 mm, was confiscated, and it is being tracked down to find out where it came from. Sanders allegedly told investigators the gun was given to him. “These guns are made for one thing, and that’s to kill,” Granthum said. “They’ve got to realize they’re not to be played with. If you have a gun, you need to know how to handle it. And fist of all, you need to have a legal gun with you.” Granthum said investigators are still trying to determine where the gun came from and are still interviewing people about the case. “We do believe at this time it could possibly be an accident like they were talking about,” Granthum said. “But it is still reckless. Even though it was an accident, he could still be facing some serious charges.” Granthum said there is nothing to make investigators think there is any foul play in the shooting. “Charges could change depending on the outcome of the investigation,” Granthum said. “But right now, he is charged with murder. He recklessly caused the death of another person.” This is the first murder in the Dallas County Sheriff Department’s jurisdiction in 2017. This is the second between the city and county combined.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/14/17: A 27-year-old man has been charged with a misdemeanor after a handgun he had on him at the Sidney Walmart discharged a round. Kevin Wilson was a customer in the store, 2400 W. Michigan St., when his semiautomatic weapon discharged, sending a slug into the floor, Sidney police Sgt. Sean Martin said. No one was hit. Wilson presented his concealed carry permit and police confiscated his weapon, Martin said. Police were dispatched to the store about 5:30 PM, he said. Martin said the charge is discharging weapons, a misdemeanor. The (LINK REMOVED) overrules private business owners from banning guns on their property as long as the person is a CCW license holder and locks the weapon in his or her personal vehicle.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/15/17: The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after an 11-year-old was accidentally shot Saturday. It happened in the 1400 block of Angling Road around 6:30 PM Saturday. Deputies say it appears people in the area were target shooting when a stray bullet missed a backstop and struck the 11-year-old in the upper body. A family member rushed the child to St. Mary’s hospital but the child was later transferred to Helen DeVos Children’s hospital in good condition. The incident remains under investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/15/17: UPDATE: Police responded to a shots fired call in the area of 14th and Farnham Streets, but no scene was found. They say a short time later, a 20-year-old man arrived at Genesis East Hospital with a gunshot wound. The injury was non-life threatening. Detectives are conducting follow up, but say the injury was determined to be unintentionally self-inflicted. ORIGINAL: Police say one person was taken to the hospital after being shot on Saturday night, April 15, 2017. Not much information has been released, but we do know that police were called to 14th and Farnham Streets around 8:30 PM. They say they didn't find any shell casings or anything related to the shooting in that area, but neighbors did report hearing gun shots. Police tell us the gunshot victim is recovering at the hospital. There is no word on the severity of their wounds.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/15/17: A Pasquotank County man shot at his home early Saturday was in critical condition Wednesday at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, according to a Sentara spokeswoman. Thomas Wilson Williams IV, 43, of Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City, was shot by his girlfriend with a shotgun around 12:25 AM Saturday, according to an incident report from the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s office. Pasquotank Sheriff Randy Cartwright said Wednesday that the shooting appears to have been accidental. Witnesses said Williams’s girlfriend was returning the shotgun to a gun rack when it accidentally discharged, damaging a wall and causing several pellets to strike Williams, who was in an adjacent room, Cartwright said. The Sheriff’s Office is hoping to talk to Williams before making a final determination in the case, Cartwright said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/15/17: A 23-year-old Bismarck man is dead of an accidental gunshot wound. Bismarck Police said Nick Laqua was showing the handgun to another person at home on Friday night. While handling the firearm, it discharged, a witness told police. He died from a head injury early Saturday at a local hospital, police said. The incident occurred on the 500 block of Assiniboin Drive in Bismarck. Brother-in-law Michael Gilbertson said Laqua grew up in Bismarck and graduated from Century High School in 2012. He worked recently as a sales consultant for Your Home Improvement Company. Gilbertson said Laqua loved hockey, longboarding and spending time with his nephews and niece. "It was just a horrific accident," Gilbertson said. "Nick was taken from us way too soon."

80 guns discovered in carry-on luggage by TSA agents at airports across the country, during the week of April 17-23, 2017.

Hi. We’re back again with another couple dozen accidental shootings. Because time marches on, and the same things keep happening over and over again, but to a mostly different set of people. Fifteen people accidentally shot themselves during the week, and two people were accidentally shot by family members or significant others. And one man, out target shooting with his son, either accidentally shot himself or was accidentally shot by his son, but we don’t know which. Unless he was accidentally shot by someone else, entirely, which I guess is a possibility. But hey, guns! So LOL YOLO ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ !

“Only” five kids were accidentally shot this week. And one injured himself by getting pinched by the slide of the semi-automatic handgun he accidentally fired.

The recurring theme for this week seemed to be the guns that are fired accidentally while their owners (or bearers, anyway) are out and about among the rest of us, while we’re shopping, dining, or otherwise going about our daily business. Four people were accidentally shot during the week—three fatally—by guns brought to the workplace. Several states now prohibit businesses from banning their employees’ guns from their property, so long as they’re stored in their (locked) personal vehicles. In Daviess County, Kentucky, a man who’d brought his gun with him to work decided, for whatever reason, to handle the weapon while sitting in his truck during his lunch break, and ended up shooting himself in the upper leg/pelvic area. I imagine he required family/medical leave, at least for the afternoon. It’s a good thing Democrats fight for such benefits. I hope it was there for him to take advantage of.

There are certainly some businesses where there’s some reasonable expectation of danger, and the management and employees there often choose to keep firearms on site for their own safety. But sometimes it doesn’t work out as planned. In Dalton, Georgia, a man was fatally wounded by a gun kept in a desk at the auto towing & recovery lot where he worked. And in West Palm Beach, Florida, a man working at a strip club was killed when a fellow employee moved and accidentally fired a gun on a shelf in the storage room. (This story gained some additional notice because the man killed was the father of a NFL football player.) And in Rainbow City, Alabama, the manager of a local bank, who carried a gun for protection when he opened the branch early in the morning, was found dead by the next employee to arrive, having accidentally shot himself.

In Columbia, South Carolina, a man shopping at the Dutch Square mall dropped the bag in which he was carrying his concealed firearm. It discharged and fired a round through the shop window. Thankfully, no one was injured. And churchgoers in Gladeville, Tennessee, likewise lucked out when a concealed carrier, (LINK REMOVED) in our GunFAIL history, accidentally discharged a firearm during Easter services.

What a time to be alive.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/16/17: A second Colorado Springs man has accidentally shot himself in a handful of days. Late Sunday, officers were called out to the YMCA on Jet Wing Drive after receiving a call about a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found that a man had accidentally shot himself while driving along the road. He was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Though he has not been charged or named thus far, this is the second time in less than a week that a Colorado Springs man accidentally shot himself.(LINK REMOVED), but reported to police that he had been shot in a drive-by in downtown Colorado Springs. Terry faces prohibited use of weapons and false reporting charges in that incident.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/16/17: Four people were arrested early Sunday after multiple shots were fired inside an apartment and one of the rounds hit a woman sleeping in another unit, according to police. When police found the 31-year-old shooting victim, they found "her ring finger had been severed," according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. About 2:15 AM, a Unified police officer at the Midvale precinct heard a shot fired next door at the Calaveras Apartments, 7940 S. Main, followed by a 20-second pause and then several more shots, said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke. Investigators believe there was a party going on inside the apartment where the shots were fired. At least one of the bullets went through a wall and into an adjacent apartment, hitting woman's fingertip, Lohrke said. The woman was sleeping on a couch, and the shot missed her head by just a few inches, he said. She was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in fair condition. Police surrounded the apartment where the shots were fired. Four people, including two juveniles, surrendered without incident, Lohrke said. Two of the people arrested are documented gang members, he said. Fernando Zavala, 23, and Giovanni Alexis Zavala, 20, were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail in connection with the shooting. Giovanni Zavala was arrested for investigation of felony discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, obstruction of justice and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to jail records. Two 17-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were also booked into Salt Lake Juvenile Detention. Search warrants were served on the apartment Sunday. Shell casings and drug paraphernalia were found in the rooms, the report states. Lohrke said it was unknown whether the shots came from one gun or if there was an exchange of gunfire. Detectives were also looking into the possibility that one of the suspects attempted to shoot someone who fled from the apartment.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/16/17: An off-duty officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department accidentally shot himself in the leg over the weekend, a police spokesperson said. Officer Michael Price will be OK after shooting himself in the leg. The incident happened around 11 AM, at the officer's house in New Palestine, Indiana. A deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff's Department responded to the shooting, and noted he saw Price laying on the ground with bruising and swelling around his right knee, according to a police report. Price told the deputy he was attempting to clear his .40-caliber mini Glock. He had it on his lap when it fired. The department is looking at employing additional training for safe handling of firearms after the incident.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/16/17: The 19-year-old Detroit man who shot two Detroit Police Officers who were responding to a burglary call is in court Friday for a preliminary hearing. Juwan Plummer, 19, was charged with shooting the officers last month when they were called to his home on Lesure Street. His family says that he fired the shotgun once in an attempt to protect his house from suspected burglars. Plummer's father Vincent Redd said his son had already been shaken up, from an apparent attempted break-in the week before and didn't know that officers had been called to investigate suspicious activity across the street. That's when Plummer fired a single shot through a front window. Redd says, his son was trying to scare away who he thought were burglars. But Prosecutors say the two young officers in full uniform banged on the door. "He never heard anyone announce themselves," Redd said. "He just saw flashlights down by the window and heard a noise approaching the porch." The shotgun blast grazed one officer in his arm, but his partner, hit in the face with two pellets. One pellet became lodged in his jaw. "When he heard that one of the police officers had been shot in the face, instantly, it tore him up," Redd said. Detroit police say that officer shot in face—originally critical, is thankfully, doing much better.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/16/17: Darcy Flagg was planning a ham dinner; instead, she spent her evening at the hospital. “Just hearing them call and say you’re daughter is being taken to the hospital because she was shot and then getting to the hospital and seeing my daughter laying in bed with her arm full of blood, it just, it was horrible,” Flagg said. Her 16-year-old daughter Brittany Bean was shot in her right forearm with a 12-gauge shotgun while she was at a friend’s house. Her friend, a 12-year-old boy, shot her according to New York State Police. Trooper Jim O’Callaghan said no adults were home at the time. “We took that weapon from the house and we also took several other weapons from the house which were not used in this incident. But as a precautionary these items were removed from the house and unfortunately a lot of these items were not locked up and some of them were even loaded,” he said. Brittany was taken via Mercy Flight to the hospital, where she’s undergone several surgeries. She’s now home-schooled for the rest of the year and won’t be enjoying the spring and summer activities she used to. “She has barely to no movement in the wrist. Her fingers are getting a little bit of movement but they are still numb. The doctors are saying it’s going to be a long road for her,” Flagg said. The 12-year-old suspect has been charged with Reckless Endangerment and Menacing. The boy’s 41-year-old father is charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child. State police want this avoidable tragedy to serve as a reminder that part of responsible gun ownership is keeping guns locked away from your children. (LINK REMOVED), 4/16/17: Kentucky State Police is asking for the public's help identifying a person involved in a hunting-related shooting Sunday morning in Pike County. Troopers say Timothy Adkins of Feds Creek told them he was mushroom hunting in the Biggs area of Pike County Easter Sunday morning when he was shot in the back by a turkey hunter. Adkins told troopers the hunter, who did not remove his face mask, told him he would go get help...but, he never returned. Family members transported Adkins to Pikeville Medical Center, where 41 buck shot pellets were removed from his back, arms and head. At this time, KSP is considering this an accidental shooting, but would like to speak to the hunter who shot Adkins. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Kentucky State Police Post 9.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/16/17: A gun accidentally discharged in a Wilson County church on Easter Sunday. It happened between sermons at The Glade Church in Gladeville. Thankfully, nobody was injured, but the incident is now under investigation. Authorities told News 2 a man, who has a carry permit, was attending an Easter service at the Gladeville Baptist church when the gun in his pocket accidentally went off. The gun was a 9mm Glock, and the bullet tore a hole through his pants and shot into the floor. Pastor Mark Marshall heard the gun shot when it happened around 9 AM. “The big picture is nobody was hurt. It was completely an accident on this guy’s part,” Marshall said. “There are people in the vicinity, so we do believe God protected everyone yesterday,” the pastor added. According to investigators, there were about 40 to 50 people around when the gun discharged. While there is a notice prohibiting firearms in the church, Pastor Marshall says several members of the congregation, including law enforcement officers, do carry guns on their person. Marshall told News 2 the notice is posted for the large number of people who use the church for various reasons all week long. And while no one was injured, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department takes the accidental discharge seriously. “You are legally and ethically responsible for every bullet that comes out of that gun,” said. Lt. Scott Moore. Sheriff’s officials say the bullet hit the carpet leaving a small mark, but the bullet could have gone anywhere. “It could happen whenever you discharge a firearm. In this case, accidentally, it could go through his leg, off the floor; it could do anything. You have no control of a bullet once it is fired,” explained Lt. Moore. The sheriff’s office says how the gun went off in the man’s pocket is unknown. “Something has to trigger the bullet to be fired out. In a situation like this, not sure if something was in his pocket, but something has to pull the trigger,” the lieutenant told News 2. The district attorney plans to review the case once the investigation is over. The man could be facing charges or lose his carry permit, but that remains unknown at this time. His weapon and ammunition were placed into evidence pending the outcome of the case.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/16/17: A man accidentally shot himself Sunday morning while running away from police in High Point. High Point Police Capt. Anthro Gamble confirmed that the shooting happened on the Triangle Montessori School property after a 20-year-old man fled from police. Officers have not named that man. The man came into contact with police after an officer heard a gunshot at 10:21 AM near Kroll Lane in High Point. Gamble said the officer was talking with the man who suddenly ran into nearby woods. The officer chased after him. Police do not know if the man is the person who fired the original gunshot. Gamble said the man shot himself as he was trying to get rid of his own gun. Gamble said he believes the 20 year old did not want to get caught with the weapon since he is not authorized to be carrying a gun. The police captain said that the man has a small criminal history with only minor crimes. Gamble said the man is hospitalized and needs surgery but he is expected to recover.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/16/17: A 76-year-old woman was accidentally shot Sunday while trying to break up a fight between two men at a home on West Baker Street in the Jefferson community of Chesterfield County, according to Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks. Brooks said the woman got between her relative and another man to stop them from fighting when her relative accidentally shot her in the stomach. Brooks said that relative was then stabbed in the eye by another relative. Deputies found the woman wounded on the front porch and her relative sitting on the steps bleeding from his left eye. Both were taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., where the woman remains in stable condition. Her relative has been treated and released. Charges are pending as the investigation continues, police say.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/17/17: What allegedly began as a late night handgun sale ended with a 19-year-old suffering a gunshot wound in downtown Juneau. According to a Juneau Police Department news release, the 19-year-old was at the Wharf building on Monday night to meet a 22-year-old man to buy a handgun. The two men, whom police did not name, were examining the loaded weapon when it went off, the statement said. At about 11:18 PM, a 911 caller reported a “bang” and a man lying on the floor screaming. Officers found the man in significant pain with a gunshot wound to his leg. “The bullet wound was in the right thigh of the 19-year-old,” Juneau police spokesman Lt. David Campbell said. “It was right in meaty part of the thigh. (It was) a fairly significant bullet wound. It wasn’t like a grazing shot or anything like that.” The victim was treated on the scene by Capital City Fire/Rescue and taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital. Campbell had read the police report, but it was in a draft format, so not all details were immediately available. Police interviewed everyone involved and located the handgun, but the details about the firearm were limited. “We are not releasing the type of gun at this point in time just because we are dealing with recommendations from the district attorney’s office,” Campbell said. “The only thing we can say is it was a semi-automatic handgun.” If the department arrests them or files charges, the department would release their names. “Saying what charges are going to apply and how we’re going to go forward at this point in time it’s too premature to say, but there are several that just on the surface look like they would apply in this case,” Campbell said. Those charges include potential weapons misconduct, assault and reckless endangerment. Campbell said it’s up to the officer, the detective and the district attorney to determine what charges apply. He also said the incident could have been prevented had both parties observed basic handgun safety protocol. “There are handgun safety rules that if they would have been followed, this situation could have been avoided,” Campbell said. “And I don’t know what kind of training these two men might have had in handling firearms, but standard safety practices would definitely have avoided this situation.” Police believe alcohol was a factor, but Campbell couldn’t say whether that meant the victim, the 22-year-old or both. No other injuries were reported and the investigation is ongoing.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/17/17: The bullet that hit a 17-month-old girl passed through her face, penetrated the drywall of a utility closet and became embedded in the outer shell of a water heater, Omaha police said in a report. Officers filed a separate report on what they had to do to recover the bullet that critically injured Ma’Laya Buie. The girl was shot Monday afternoon in a third-floor apartment at the Pine Tree Apartments, 10375 Hamilton Plaza. Ma’Laya’s father, Marquell Buie, 22, has said that the shooting was accidental and that another toddler had fired the shot. Officials are continuing to investigate the shooting. Marquell Buie said Tuesday that doctors were trying to reduce the swelling in his daughter’s head. Police forensic investigators had to cut a hole in the drywall to gain access to the spot on the water heater hit by the bullet, according to the report. The outer shell of the water heater was cut and peeled back to provide access to the inner insulation, police said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/17/17: A Southside man well-known and well-regarded in the community died from an apparent accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday morning at Exchange Bank in Rainbow City. Roy Christopher Daniel, 54, was found at the bank, where he worked as a manager, just after 7:30 AM, Rainbow City Police Chief Jonathon Horton said, by the next bank employee to arrive at work. Police secured the scene and continue to investigate the incident, he said, but after viewing security camera recordings, Daniel’s death is believed to be an accident. Daniel usually arrived at the bank about 7:20 AM, the chief said, and he usually carried a gun for personal protection. “He was very security conscious in his position at the bank,” Horton said. “He would come in and make sure the bank was safe.” “This morning there wasn’t anything wrong, but it appears that he was alarmed of something,” Horton said, after viewing the surveillance footage. “He had his weapon there with him, and as unfortunate, as tragic, as it sounds ... he accidentally discharged his weapon and it ended his life,” he said. “Mr. Daniel was a good friend to the city,” Horton said. “He participated on many levels. He was a good friend to all of us—a personal friend. “It’s just a tragedy. We ask people to pray for his family,” the chief said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/17/17: Chickasaw County Sheriff Jim Meyers says he responded to a Chickasaw County house after a report that Lekearis Shoemaker shot himself. The sheriff said the man’s cousin heard gunshots and walked outside of this house to find Shoemaker shot in the abdomen. “Our office received a call that somebody had received a gunshot wound. When our deputies got there, they had already put the suspect in a vehicle and carried him to the hospital," said Meyers. He says Shoemaker's cousin rushed him to Trace Regional Hospital in Houston, and he was then flown to North Mississippi Medical Center. The man is in critical condition in the intensive care unit. The sheriff says he's treating the incident like an accidental shooting until he interviews the man. “Right now, we really don’t know. He’s a young male. We’re trying to determine all that now. Like I said, we’re trying to go back now and interview neighbors to see if anybody saw anything," said Sheriff Meyers. No neighbors were available for comment. The sheriff says one round was fired.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/17/17: Two men were arrested after one of them attempted to shoot Pittsburg officers in a shopping center parking lot Monday afternoon, police said. Around 4 PM, Pittsburg officers followed a stolen vehicle into the parking lot at Costco, 2201 Verne Roberts Circle, Pittsburg police Capt. Ron Raman said. As the vehicle’s driver stopped and officers got out to approach it, the vehicle’s front-seat passenger fired once at officers before the car sped away, Raman said. While fleeing, the passenger accidentally shot himself, and both vehicle occupants were arrested after a brief pursuit, Raman said. Police arrested and identified the driver as Harrison Thomas, 48, of Concord and the passenger, who had recently been released from prison, as Nathaniel Sheppard, 28, of Pittsburg. Both men will be booked into Martinez county jail on suspicion of attempted murder on a police officer, along with other felony charges. “We are grateful that none of our officers or community members were hurt as a result of the violent acts of these suspects,” Raman said in a statement.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/17/17: Two teenagers ran from an apartment after one of them accidentally fired a shotgun into the floor and hit himself in the foot during an armed robbery April 16 in Stevens Point, according to a criminal complaint filed last week. David Schmies, 18, and Zachary Hendricks, 17, both of Iola, face multiple charges, including armed robbery, a felony with a maximum penalty of up to 40 years in prison. They both appeared Monday in Portage County Circuit Court to hear the charges filed against them, according to court records. Schmies and Hendricks demanded cash and marijuana before they ordered two people inside the apartment to the ground and bound their hands with zip ties, the complaint says. Schmies was wearing a paintball mask, while Hendricks was wearing a bandana over his face. Schmies was pacing in the apartment, waiting for Hendricks to return with the cash and marijuana, when the shotgun he was holding suddenly went off, the complaint says. Schmies and Hendricks started yelling at each other, then ran from the apartment with about $2,500 and nearly a pound of marijuana. Police sent photos of Schmies and Hendricks to officials at Amherst High School, who recognized Schmies because he was a current student, the complaint says. Schmies initially denied involvement in the armed robbery, but later admitted his role in the incident after giving officers inconsistent explanations for an injury to his foot, which was wrapped in electrical tape and “appeared to be infected and swollen,” the complaint says. Hendricks admitted his involvement in the armed robbery when he was confronted by police, the complaint says. Schmies and Hendricks are both still being held on $25,000 cash bonds. They’re scheduled to be back in court May 15.

Newark police said Davon Johnson, 28, of Orange, arrived at University Hospital around 11:15 PM with a gunshot wound. It was not clear where he was shot. Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said the location of where the shooting happened remains under investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/18/17: Another suspect has been arrested in connection with last week’s shooting death of a 25-year-old Ashland man, police said Tuesday. Landry Watkins, 22, of Kevin Street in Houma, turned himself in to the Houma Police Department shortly after noon Tuesday, Police Chief Dana Coleman said. Watkins is the fourth suspect charged in the April 19 second-degree murder of Daronte Howard of Mozart Drive. Houma resident Travelyn Warren Gims, 31, of 103 Tulane St. was arrested Thursday, and Jerod Mosley, 27, of Morrison Avenue in Houma, surrendered to authorities Saturday afternoon. The fourth suspect, Michael Dewayne Diggs Jr., 34, of 1157 Lafayette St., had originally been charged for the murder but was released after authorities said Thursday they received “credible information” from independent witnesses that Diggs had not been involved. Coleman said that detectives obtained additional information in the investigation which led to Watkins’ arrest. Since his arrest, Watkins has been cooperating with authorities, Coleman said. Investigators said Howard and a friend were sitting inside of a vehicle that had been parked in front of a residence on Larry Street about 10:30 PM when Gims climbed into the car’s rear passenger side and two or three suspects dressed in dark-colored clothing approached. Howard and Gims began fighting as one of the other suspects robbed Howard’s friend at gunpoint, police said. Howard was shot in his upper torso during the scuffle, and Gims and the other suspects fled the scene. Howard then drove himself to Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center in Houma, where he died from multiple gunshot wounds, the police chief said. Gims was involved in planning the robbery, and the other suspects were developed as accomplices, investigators said. Gims shot himself in the leg with a handgun during the struggle and was taken to a local medical facility, where he was treated, police said. Once released, Gims was charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. All three remaining suspects are in the Terrebonne Parish jail on a $500,000 bond. Gims is also being held with no bond for a parole violation, the Sheriff’s Office said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/19/17: The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the report of a gunshot victim with serious blood loss at 12:20 PM yesterday on Kentucky 405. According to DCSO, when emergency crews arrived, they discovered William P. Mullens with a gunshot wound to his leg and pelvic area. Investigation revealed the gunshot was accidental and occurred due to Mullens handling a .40 caliber handgun that he didn’t realize was loaded. Authorities say Mullens was sitting in his truck during his lunch break handling the gun when it discharged once striking him in the leg. Prior to the arrival of emergency crews, Mullens was assisted by co-workers and a neighbor to prevent further blood loss. Dispatchers were also providing instructions over the phone until emergency crews arrived. Yelvington Volunteer Fire Department, Daviess County Fire Department and Owensboro/Daviess County Ambulance assisted at the scene. Mullens was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital for further treatment. No charges were filed by DCSO.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/19/17: A 13-year-old was hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself on a north St. Louis porch Wednesday afternoon. Around 3:40 PM, the teenager was playing with a loaded gun on the back porch of his home in the 1900 block of Hebert when it went off and a bullet struck him in the hand, police said. The teenager was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition. According to police, the gun was not found at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/19/17: Thanks to the powers of the Internet—and social media—police have charged a man that allegedly gave a phony story about how he sustained a gunshot wound to the foot. Kyle Garrison, 25, initially told police he sustained a gunshot wound to his foot when he was robbed by two men at gunpoint. Officers learned the truth, according to court documents, by taking a look at Garrison’s Facebook page. According to the criminal complaint: Officers were dispatched to 130 Stephenson St. at 10:18 AM on April 20 for a report of a man who was shot approximately two hours prior. The victim, identified as Garrison, was found sitting on the porch of the residence and being treated by EMS workers for an injury on his right foot. Garrison reported that he was walking north on North Main Street when two black men wearing black hoodies and dark jeans jumped out and demanded his possessions. Garrison reported that one of the men pointed what looked like a .357 revolver at him, and when he slapped it down, it went off and the shot struck him in the foot. Officers asked to see Garrison’s phone, but he denied them access. Garrison then claimed that someone unknown to him called after the incident. Garrison’s Facebook account, however, told a different tale. Officers looked up Garrison’s Facebook account, and discovered three separate videos posted several hours before the alleged incident. The video depicted three men consuming alcohol and shooting a revolver. One of the men pointed the revolver toward the ground and fired a shot. In another video, Garrison could be heard stating he was shot several times, and the video then showed his foot with a wound to the big toe. Garrison also posted on his page that he had been shot in the toe. Investigators also learned that Garrison has a prior felony conviction that prevents him from using or possessing a firearm. Garrison was interviewed by police on May 3 and read his Miranda warnings and agreed to speak with officers. Garrison said he and his friend, Sean Granahan, met up with two other men at the Saints and Sinner’s bar on April 19. Garrison said the trio then went back to Granahan’s residence to get more alcohol to go ATV riding. That is when Granahan retrieved the firearm, and the trio then went to an area in Pittston Township known as “the pick” near Devil’s Falls. Garrison admitted to posting the videos on social media, and that Granahan shot him in the foot when he pointed the gun downward. Garrison also told police he later deleted the videos in hopes they would not be seen by law enforcement. Garrison also said he “got scared” when he called 911 and made up the story when he found out police would have to respond with the ambulance. Garrison was arraigned on charges of possession of a firearm prohibited and making false reports before District Judge Alexandra Kokura Kravitz on Wednesday, and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing before Kravitz at 9:30 AM on May 24. He is free on $25,000 unsecured bail.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/20/17: A woman reported she accidentally discharged a firearm inside her house shortly after 9:30 PM Thursday on the 300 block of Ward Street in Juliaetta, according to the Latah County Sheriff’s Office. The woman told a deputy she had her firearm out due to a recent incident and she was in the process of putting the firearm away. She said she de-cocked the firearm and is not sure how it fired. No injuries were reported and the woman was not charged. The sheriff’s office said the woman’s sliding glass door was damaged as a result of the discharge but a deputy did not find any damage to surrounding residences.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/21/17: UPDATE: The Dalton Police Department is investigating today's fatal shooting at an office at the A1 Towing & Recovery lot as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Department spokesman Bruce Frazier said there's a possibility that this was an accidental shooting as opposed to an intentional act on the part of the victim. Frazier apologized for using the term suicide earlier, which would imply intent. PREVIOUS UPDATE: Dalton Police Department investigators believe a man committed suicide by shooting himself today at an office at the A1 Towing & Recovery lot. In a release, spokesman Bruce Frazier said investigators found a gun under the desk where the person was found. Also, surveillance footage does not show anyone walking in or out of the office before the shooting, which was reported to the police around 12:30 PM. ORIGINAL STORY: Police are investigating a shooting today that claimed the life of a man at A1 Towing & Recovery lot in the 1500 block of E. Morris Street in Dalton, Ga. Officers were dispatched about 12:30 PM on the report of a shooting victim being found in an office at the lot, according to Bruce Frazier of the Dalton Police Department. Responding officers found a male victim with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Hamilton Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to Frazier. The victim's identity has not been released. Officers have secured the scene and are investigating but no arrests have been made.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/21/17: The father of former Florida State football star Travis Rudolph was killed when authorities say a gun accidentally went off at a Florida strip club. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that 55-year-old Darryl Rudolph was in a storage room fixing items at Sugar D’s Adult Club in West Palm Beach when another worker moved a gun off a shelf in an adjacent room and it fired. The bullet struck Rudolph in the back of the neck on Friday. Wide receiver Travis Rudolph led Florida State in receiving the past two seasons and is forgoing his final season of eligibility to enter the NFL draft this week. Travis Rudolph made headlines last year when he ate lunch with an autistic middle school student who was sitting alone. A photo of the pair was shared online and the story went viral.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/21/17: Ocala Police Department officers were investigating two separate shootings that occurred less than 15 minutes of each other on Friday evening. At 7:28 PM, while officers were investigating the first shooting, they received a call about the second one, across town at Steeples Apartments at 2901 SW 41st St. In the incident, a man—whose name was not released—was critically injured. Police aid he was shot be his female roommate, who feared an intruder. They were the fifth and sixth shootings since Wednesday afternoon—in which a total of five people have been injured.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/21/17: Charges of attempted homicide have been filed against a man who shot a woman after mistaking her for an intruder last week, according to police in Harrisburg. Saivon Markel Waller, 22, has also been charged with aggravated assault for the April 21 shooting that injured Chave Miller, according to court records. Officers were called to the 1600 block of North Third Street just after 5 PM after receiving a report of shots fired in the area, records state. Miller was found in the doorway to 1623 North Third Street with gunshot wounds to her left thigh and left pelvic area, police said. "Waller was sitting in the doorway to the apartment building. Waller did admit on scene that he shot Miller as she was coming up the steps to his apartment because he thought she was an intruder," court records state. Court records did not include additional information about the incident. Waller is currently being held in the Dauphin County Prison on $500,000 bail. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for May 3.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/21/17: Authorities say a 17-year-old was killed Friday afternoon during an accidental shooting in Akron. Officers responded to a shooting on the 600 block of Fulmer Avenue around 1 PM. They found a 17-year-old with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Dylan Ray Hudson, 18, of Akron, has been charged with reckless homicide and receiving stolen property in the shooting. The gun had been reported stolen from a car on Lansing Road. Hudson has been booked into the Summit County Jail. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy. The victim's name is being withheld pending positive identification and family notifications. Authorities say the shooting appears to be accidental.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/21/17: Metro police are investing after a 4-year-old child was injured by a gun. Police say it appears the child got a hold of a gun and was possibly pinched by the slide when the gun went off. Police say the child is in good condition and was treated on the scene.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/21/17: The Custer County Sheriff's Office received a report of an unknown accident on the school ground just off of Ryno Road Friday, April 21, 2017 at 11:07 AM. Sheriff Dan Osmond and Deputies responded and conducted an investigation. The investigation revealed that a male subject identified as Thomas A. Essig (date of birth 08-24-1969) of Longmont, Colo. had been accidentally shot in the face at a distance of approximately of 170 feet with a shotgun by his hunting partner Kevin J. Scannell (date of birth 03-09-1966) of Fraser, Colo. Essing was transported to Callaway District Hospital and later flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney with non-life threatening injuries. The shooting has been ruled accidental.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/22/17: An Elgin man was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm after a friend was taken to an area hospital with a bullet wound, police said. According to Elgin police, officers were called about 5:53 AM Saturday to St. Alexius Medical Center, Hoffman Estates, for a gunshot victim. The person had serious injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. The person told police he was accidentally shot by a friend identified as Jeffery A. Cohn, 35, of Elgin, while they were at Cohn's house in the 100 block of Mosley Street in Elgin. Cohn was taken into custody at his residence. Following a warrant search, police found two firearms and ammunition, according to reports. Cohn was previously convicted on felony charges and he does not possess a valid Firearm Owners Identification card, police said. He was charged with three class 2 felony counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, in addition to the class 4 reckless discharge count. Bail was set at $50,000.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/22/17: Authorities have released the name of a Rapid City man who accidentally shot and killed himself while hunting over the weekend. The Pennington County Sheriff's Office says 63-year-old Timothy Coats was found dead Sunday on U.S. Forest Service land off of South Dakota Highway 44. His family says Coats did not return from turkey hunting Saturday. He was hunting alone. Investigators say he apparently accidentally shot himself while crossing a barbed wire fence.

Clay County Sheriff Department is saying that at 1:45 PM this afternoon a juvenile male accidentally shot another juvenile male outside of Hawley, Minnesota. On scene was Hawley City Rescue, Sanford AirMed, Fargo Medical Ambulance and the Clay County Sheriff Department. No charges have been placed at this time. The investigation is still ongoing. The injury is said to be non-life threatening.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says one of their deputies was flagged down just north of Arlington near 90th Street and W-51 on Saturday morning. A passenger in the vehicle had suffered a gunshot wound to his ankle. The deputy performed first aid to the man, 50-year old Patrick Lynch of Grimes, until an ambulance arrived. A preliminary investigation shows Lynch was target-practicing with his 25-year old son on private property north of Arlington when a 9-mm pistol accidentally fired. Lynch was transported to Regional Medical Center in Manchester. The incident remains under investigation.

(LINK REMOVED) , 4/22/17: Dubuque Police have identified the two men injured in an accidental shooting on Saturday night. 28-year-old Kyle Chase and 29-year-old Travis Lemonovich each suffered leg injuries after Chase inadvertently fired his handgun while showing it to Lemonovich. The incident happened at about 10:30 Saturday night at Chase’s home in the 2100 block of Garfield Avenue. Both men were taken to Finley Hospital to be treated for their injuries. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing. It’s unclear whether any charges will be filed.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/22/17: Ogden Police say that a dog attack led to an accidental shooting on Hutchings Road. Police say that people were out walking a dog. That is when another dog from another house in the neighborhood reportedly got loose and attacked the dog the people were walking. According to police, one of the individuals walking allegedly tried to shoot the attacking dog using a legally permitted gun, but accidentally shot another person they were walking with in the lower extremity. Police say the person shot was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They say that the attacking dog is dead, while the dog that was attacked is reportedly fine.

Police say after looking at video, the shooting appears to be accidental. No one was injured, however a shop window was damaged. Investigators say it appears that the man had a firearm inside a bag, and the gun went off when he dropped the bag on the floor inside the shopping center. Police released a photo of the person they are looking for to question about the incident.

Just after 6 PM, authorities responded to a call at Spring Guns and Ammo on Spring Cypress. The injured deputy was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening wounds, authorities said. L.A. county police shoot at attacking pit bull, instead kill teen, authorities say

Amber Alcantar woke early Thursday morning to a knock at the door.

Before her stood a friend of her nephew, 17-year-old Armando Garcia-Muro. The young man was frantically searching for Garcia-Muro’s mother, Alcantar told the Los Angeles Times. In his hands were bloody shoes.

“Obviously something was wrong,” Alcantar said.

What had just unfolded outside an apartment complex in Palmdale, Calif., would later be described by authorities as an “extremely, extremely unfortunate incident” and by his family as the tragic loss of an animal-loving teen. While trying to shoot a dog that had attacked an officer, deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office instead struck Garcia-Muro.

Their bullets ricocheted off the driveway, authorities said, and one hit the teen’s chest. He later died at a hospital.

The sheriff’s office released details of the incident in a statement and at a news conference, but did not identify the teen victim. The family of Garcia-Muro told local reporters his name and age.

My nephew was trying to save the dog because the cops started shooting at the dog,” Alcantar, the teen’s aunt, told CBS Los Angeles. “He put his life on the line for an animal that wasn’t even his.”

According to the police account, deputies were called to an apartment in Palmdale, a city 60 miles north of Los Angeles, just before 4 a.m. Thursday to investigate a report of “loud music.” They approached the apartment in question and were “aggressively charged” by a 60 to 65-pound pit bull, authorities said. The dog bit one of the deputies on the knee.

At that time, a “male Hispanic juvenile” emerged from behind the apartment, restrained the dog and took him back to the rear of the complex. Deputies “retreated back onto the street for safety,” treated the injured officer and called paramedics.

As they waited for help to arrive, the dog returned and charged the deputies again, authorities said. Two officers shot at the dog from a distance of five to seven feet and it returned to a carport area behind the complex.

Deputies followed the dog to trap it and “prevent additional victims” but in the carport area, they found the young teen bleeding on the ground from “what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the chest.” Deputies provided medical attention until paramedics transported the boy to a hospital, where he died.

“Preliminary investigation indicated the first six to eight feet where the shooting occurred with the pit bull, there was evidence of skip rounds on the driveway area,” the sheriff’s department said in the statement. “Detectives believe when the juvenile came out from behind the building, which was approximately 40 feet away from where the shooting occurred with the dog, the juvenile may have been struck by one of the skip rounds.”

The deputy injured by the dog bite was also hit by a bullet fragment in his right leg, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. The dog was shot and survived but will be euthanized, authorities said.

At a news conference, Capt. Christopher Bergner told reporters five deputies were present at the time of the shooting but only two discharged their weapons, reported the Los Angeles Times. Six to eights shots were fired, Bergner said.

The teen “may have been struck by one of the skip rounds in what we’re calling an extremely, extremely unfortunate incident,” Bergner said. “Our initial impression was didn’t even see the individual coming around from the side of the building.”

The dog’s owner, a woman, told the Los Angeles Times that the neighborhood kids use her home a local hangout to listen to music.

“They are all my friends,” the woman, who declined to give her name, told the Times. “They are good kids.”

The dog, she said, is a 3-year-old blue-nosed pit bull that was usually well-mannered when off its leash. She disputed authorities’ claim that her dog attacked them.

“That’s not my dog,” the woman told the Times. “That’s not his personality.”

Garcia-Muro’s mother, Roberta Alcantar, told the Times her son was the eldest of four siblings, loved dogs and wanted to go into the construction business. He would have been a senior at R. Rex Parris High School in Palmdale this fall.

“He would give his life for anybody,” Alcantar said. “He was a very loving person.”

A Stunt Turns Deadly for a Couple Seeking YouTube Fame

Over the past several weeks, Monalisa Perez of Halstad, Minn., and her boyfriend, Pedro Ruiz III, began their quest for YouTube fame by creating and posting videos of mostly harmless pranks: Mr. Ruiz climbing onto a tenuous tree branch and falling a short distance, or Ms. Perez feeding him a doughnut covered in baby powder rather than powdered sugar.

On Monday evening, the couple suddenly upped the ante when, the authorities say, Ms. Perez, 19, shot at a thick book that Mr. Ruiz, 22, was holding, apparently believing that the bullet would not make it through the volume.

But the high-risk stunt went horribly wrong: The bullet entered Mr. Ruiz’s chest and he died at the scene.

“I really have no idea what they were thinking,” Sheriff Jeremy Thornton of Norman County said in a telephone interview late Wednesday. “I just don’t understand the younger generation on trying to get their 15 minutes of fame.”

It was a preventable death, the sheriff said, apparently fostered by a culture in which money and some degree of stardom can be obtained by those who attract a loyal internet following with their antics.

In the couple’s last video, posted on Monday, Ms. Perez and her boyfriend considered what it would be like to be one of those stars — “when we have 300,000 subscribers.”

“The bigger we get, I’ll be throwing parties,” Mr. Ruiz said. “Why not?”

Instead, just hours after she posted that video, Ms. Perez was arrested and booked into Northwest Regional Corrections Center on suspicion of reckless discharge of a firearm, the sheriff said. Then, on Wednesday morning, prosecutors charged her with second-degree manslaughter. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $20,000, or both.

Ms. Perez, who is pregnant with her second child, appeared in court on Wednesday afternoon for a hearing and was released in the evening after $7,000 bail was posted.

The department has video recordings of the shooting, the sheriff said, adding that he would not release them.

In an interview with The Star Tribune of Minneapolis, Lisa Primeau, an aunt of Mr. Ruiz’s, said, “We called him our little daredevil.” Her nephew put “a dangerous twist on everything he did,” she added, once even “jumping into the swimming pool from the top of the house.”

Ms. Perez told investigators that she had shot Mr. Ruiz from about a foot away while he held a 1.5-inch thick book to his chest, the authorities said. She described using a firearm that matched the pistol that was found at the scene.

Mr. Ruiz had been “trying to get her” to fire the gun “for a while,” Ms. Perez told investigators, according to court documents. They state that he had set up one camera on the back of a vehicle and another on a ladder to capture the stunt.

To help persuade her to pull the trigger, Mr. Ruiz had even shown Ms. Perez a book that he had previously shot himself, she told investigators. In that case, she said, the bullet had not gone all the way through the text.

The gun, a gold Desert Eagle .50-caliber pistol, was a “very strong weapon,” the sheriff said, adding that “as far as I know,” it was legal for Mr. Ruiz to own it.

Claudia Ruiz, another aunt of Mr. Ruiz, told WDAY-TV in Fargo that before the fatal shooting, her nephew rationalized the stunt as a way to get more viewers and “get famous.”

Ms. Perez appears to have posted 18 videos on her YouTube channel since May 9.

In the videos, the pair’s stunts are interwoven with raw moments that chronicle their evolving relationship. Ms. Perez complains that living in a rural farm community in northwestern Minnesota turns a trip to the grocery store into an afternoon-long ordeal. Other scenes show Ms. Perez, Mr. Ruiz and their daughter eating baked pasta leftovers for lunch; the couple discussing how a relative’s offhand comment stung; and the pair falling into bed together, exhausted.

In one particularly poignant video, Ms. Perez takes viewers with her to the doctor’s office on the day she and Mr. Ruiz discover the gender of their second child. She tells viewers early in the video that she is secretly rooting for a boy.

“Fingers crossed,” she says.

Then, minutes later, with the camera pointed at the sonogram, she practically squeals, “Oh, it’s a boy!”

“That’s awesome,” Mr. Ruiz says. “That’s my boy.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, all but one of the videos had between 200 and 3,000 views.

But by the evening, many of them had several thousand. And the couple’s final video, which was linked to by news reports about the shooting, had more than 83,000 — and climbing.

Pro-confederate ‘patriot’ mistakenly shoots himself while trying to counter-protest at anti-fascism rally

A self-described “patriot” who showed up to counter-protest at an anti-fascism rally that never happened at Gettysburg National Military Park managed to shoot himself with an ancient gun he was packing.

According to Fox43, 23-year-old Benjamin Hornberger showed up to attend a rumored “anti-fa” rally when his gun went off and the bullet lodged in his thigh.

According to spokesperson for the national park, Hornberger was in an area open to park visitors, but outside of a fenced area where some groups have protested previously.

Park officials quickly provided medical help to the young Pennsylvanian by applying a tourniquet before was transported to a local hospital.

“It looks like he’ll be OK,” claimed U.S. Park Police spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Rose.

According to Katie Lawhon, a spokeswoman for the national park, Hornberger’s gun discharged a second time as a park police attempted to take the bullets out, but no one was hurt by the second shot.

“It was apparently an old gun, not in good working order,” Lawhon explained.

66 guns discovered by TSA agents in carry-on bags at airports around the country, during the week of April 24-30, 2017.

The week of April 23 was a pretty busy one. The numbers were fairly typical: 15 people who accidentally shot themselves, 14 kids accidentally shot, six accidental gun fatalities, five people who accidentally shot other family members, etc. Like I said, pretty typical. What was extraordinary was the number of GunFAIL incidents that were themselves extraordinary, in one way or another.

We had a Colorado man accidentally shoot his brother while the two were practicing their “defensive techniques.” We had an accidental discharge at a Texas gun show. We had an Arizona wildfire started by the careless use of exploding targets. In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, we had a loaded gun left not just in a public bathroom, but on the baby changing table, at that. We had an Ohio cop accidentally shoot himself in the leg at the practice range, with a rifle he had slung over his shoulder. We had a Florida man accidentally shoot into his neighbor’s apartment when he decided the time was right for a little heroin and to clean his gun. We had it all!

I’m not even done yet! We had a Philadelphia teenager decide to try to wake his friend up for school by sticking a gun in his face, then accidentally shooting him in the eye. We had a campus concealed carrier in Utah accidentally fire the weapon in his backpack in the middle of a Utah Valley University food court. We had yet another turkey hunter accidentally shot in Ohio, once again doing such a good job with his turkey call that he was mistaken for the real thing. We had a California driver who pulled his gun in self-defense during a road rage incident, only to accidentally shoot himself in the leg on the draw. (Though it should be noted that the assailant did then flee.) And finally, we had yet another gun instructor accidentally shoot a student, this time in Michigan.

That’s a lot!

I’ll just wrap up by recalling the Utah Valley University accident and note that that is the second time UVU has made the GunFAIL list, the first being in May 2015, when (LINK REMOVED) while taking his gun apart, forgetting there was a round in the chamber. Back in 2012, a student at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah,(LINK REMOVED). And it was in Taylorsville, Utah, in September 2014 when a sixth grade teacher injured herself when she (LINK REMOVED) in the faculty bathroom with her (not very well) concealed handgun.

So, you know, keep that all in mind as more states begin to permit campus carry and allow teachers to arm themselves in the classroom. (Pennsylvania (LINK REMOVED), by the way.) After all, that’s actually the reason I try to keep track of how frequent gun accidents of all kinds really are.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/23/17: A man who on Sunday told police that his 27-year-old brother had shot a 4-year-old boy in the hand recanted his statement Tuesday after a court hearing for his brother, Jared Nichols. “The little boy got a hold of the gun and the little boy shot himself in the hand is what happened,” said Dennis Nichols, 39, after his brother’s first court appearance Tuesday morning. He added that he and his brother had been drinking “some beers” before the shooting occurred. The account differs from what he told police, according to prosecutor Eric Fabian. Fabian said both Dennis Nichols and the 4-year-old had told officers that Jared Nichols fired the shot. Jared Nichols is charged with intentional child abuse and tampering with physical evidence. Douglas County Judge Thomas Harmon on Tuesday ordered him held on $450,000 bail. He also ordered him to have no contact with any child under 19 years old if he posted the required $45,000 for release. Jared Nichols’ girlfriend, Coneasha Davis, has said she left her son, Princeton Shannon-Davis, at Nichols’ duplex at 3301 Blondo St. on Sunday evening. Fabian, the prosecutor, said Jared Nichols shot Princeton in the hand with a Taurus 9mm pistol and then asked his brother to throw the gun in a sewer. Dennis Nichols refused, Fabian said, and Jared Nichols took the gun and went around the side of the building. Police recovered the gun in a storm sewer with a spent casing inside the slide, Fabian said. Dennis Nichols and another brother, 29-year-old Jamie Nichols, said after court that Jared Nichols told officers where the gun was. They defended their brother, saying it was an accident and that he immediately provided first aid to the boy. “He cares for the children,” Jamie said. “He’s a good man. He wants to get out and go back to the family.” “He said he wants to get help—parenting classes and stuff like that. He’s willing to do anything to better himself,” Dennis Nichols said. Public defender Mary Thielen was vague about the circumstances of the shooting, but said it doesn’t equate to intentional child abuse committed by someone who might, for example, shake a baby. “A gun was in a place where it should not have been, and it resulted in this accidental shooting,” Thielen said. Jared Nichols waived his preliminary hearing and will stand trial.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/23/17: A man faces charges for reckless manslaughter and prohibited use of a weapon for admitting to fatally shooting his brother while he says they were practicing “defensive techniques.” The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says deputies first responded to the shooting at around 6:15 PM on April 23. The admitted shooter, identified as 30-year-old Erik Mattyasovsky, has been booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center. His brother has not yet been identified. The incident remains under investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/23/17: A shooting at the Bell County Expo Center has left police asking the public to be more careful. Sunday afternoon a gun show vendor was showing someone a gun when the weapon accidently discharged. Deputies say the bullet went up in the ceiling and thankfully did not hurt anyone on its way down. The vendor was asked to leave following the incident, however deputies say incidents like these can quickly escalate into something much worse. "These guys are dealers and they deal with guns all the time and even they had an accident," said Major T.J. Cruz of the Bell Co. Sheriff's Dept, "This was an isolated incident but it's very important to point out always treat a gun like it's loaded." It's unclear why the vendor had the handgun loaded since only ammunition brought in the original box is allowed.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/23/17: A man target shooting on state land Sunday morning started the Sawmill Fire that had burned 22,000 acres by Tuesday night, according to several sources who spoke with the Green Valley News. The man was firing at exploding targets when brush apparently ignited near Box Canyon and the Santa Rita Ranch about 11 AM. He tried to put out the blaze, then called to report it. He later turned himself in, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. John Cambra, a public information officer with the Southeast Arizona Incident Management Team, the team fighting the fire, would not confirm the reports. “It's human-caused, under investigation,” he said, adding that there were no arrests. He would not discuss whether anybody had been questioned. Heidi Schewel, a public affairs officer for the Coronado National Forest, also would not confirm the reports. “Our statement is (that) our case is under investigation,” she said. Exploding targets are created by mixing two types of powder in a container and are detonated when shot by a high-velocity firearm bullet. Fueled by heavy winds and bone-dry grass, the Sawmill Fire continued its march east on Tuesday, charring an estimated 22,000 acres and prompting law enforcement officials to prepare to evacuate residents of about 400 homes east of the Santa Rita Mountains. The fire crested the mountain Sunday night and by Tuesday evening had prompted the closure of Highway 83 from Interstate 10 to Highway 82 in Sonoita. Nearly 300 firefighters from across the state were assigned to it, Cambra said. Nearly three dozen homes and ranches near the eastern slope were evacuated to the Sonoita Fairgrounds on Monday and the American Red Cross set up another evacuation shelter at Pima County’s Southeast Regional Park Shooting Range. Exploding targets contain chemicals that mix to produce a loud noise when penetrated by a high velocity bullet. Although federal land managers have banned exploding targets in at least a dozen national forests in four Western states, they are not banned in Arizona. Doug MacKinlay, owner of Diamondback Shooting Sports in Tucson, spoke with exploding target manufacturers and watched several YouTube videos online before deciding he won’t carry exploding targets. “Exploding targets are fun if used properly, but you’re always going to get that one individual who’s going to say, ‘Wow, that’s what a quarter-pound does, let’s see what five pounds does or 10 pounds or 20 pounds will do.”

(LINK REMOVED), 4/23/17: A 26-year-old man told police he was walking in Little Rock on Sunday night when someone drove by and shot him, according to a police report. Little Rock resident Courtney Hammons told investigators he was in the 800 block of South Dennison Street about 10:30 PM Sunday when he was struck by gunfire, a Little Rock Police Department report said. Officers met Hammons at a hospital. Hammons couldn't give police a description of the person who shot him or the car the gunman was in, the report said. Police said the Hammons "had a bullet wound on the inside of his right leg just above his foot" with an exit wound in his heel, according to the report. Police noted in the document that the wound "appeared to be self-inflicted." A hospital receptionist told officers that a male left Hammons at the hospital and drove away in a maroon SUV. A female was driving, the report said. No arrests had been made at the time of the report.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/23/17: Authorities have ruled an April 23 incident that hospitalized a Little Rock man with a gunshot wound as accidental, but the man now faces multiple charges for unlawful possession of a firearms and another charge of child endangerment. Joseph Michael Pedersen, 36, suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest at a residence in the 300 block of Clothier Street in Little Rock April 23. Pedersen was transported to Sibley Hospital and then flown to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls for treatment of his injury. According to a news release issued Tuesday, an investigation by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident determined Pedersen had inflicted the gunshot wound on himself. However, he was found to not be allowed to have firearms in his possession. Pedersen was charged Monday with seven counts of felony possession of firearms and one count of child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor. He has been released from the Lyon County Jail on $10,000 bond.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/23/17: A neighborhood along Ford Street is still in shock following the shooting death of a Vicksburg 3-year-old on Sunday. Police confirm that the child's name is Jayceon Karter O'Neal Hasty. According to Vicksburg investigators, he was handling a gun when he was shot. Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said the child was shot in the chest with a .380 caliber handgun and was found in the living room. Police said Jayceon's father and a 16-year-old were inside the home at the time of the incident. The father's name has not been released. Investigators have not said how the child gained access to the gun. "The failure to properly maintain and secure a gun could amount to culpable manslaughter," said Warren County District Attorney Ricky Smith. "If convicted that charge carries a penalty of 20 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections". Smith would not speak specifically about the case, but said no decision has been made regarding criminal charges. Vicksburg Police Department officials say so far no charges been filed.

According to police, a 16-year-old boy accidentally shot himself on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. We’re told the teen is in stable condition. JPD said no children from the school were present where the incident happened. No other injuries were reported.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/24/17: A man cleaning a Broadway at the Beach restroom Monday told Myrtle Beach police he found a gun on a baby changing station, a report says. Police were called Monday afternoon to Celebrity Circle within the entertainment complex. The man told officers while he was cleaning a bathroom near Margaritaville, he found a gun laying on the baby changing station while no one else was inside, the report says. The man said he didn’t see anyone in the bathroom and told his boss immediately after discovering the Ruger LCP 380 gun, which was valued at $300, police said. Police checked to see if the gun was stolen and said it wasn’t after investigating. Its unclear whether the gun was loaded when it was discovered.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/24/17: A Rocky River police officer was hospitalized Monday after what investigators described as an accidental shooting at a Lorain County gun range. The shooting happened between 11 to 11:45 AM Monday at the Lorain County Joint Vocation School Law Enforcement Range. The 25-year-veteran, who is a police sergeant, was taken to MetroHealth by helicopter for treatment. His condition is unknown, but he was conscious when he got to the hospital. A .223-caliber bullet went through the back of the officer's left leg and came out of the front of his leg and into his left foot, Lorain County Sheriff's Office Capt. Rick Thomas said. The officer's rifle was slung over his shoulder and pointed toward the ground with a round in the chamber and the safety off, Thomas said. He reached around to grab the hand guard and instead hit the trigger, Thomas said. "You got to always pay attention with firearms," Thomas said. "I feel sorry for the guy." Eight Rocky River police officers went to the gun range for rifle qualification training, Thomas said. Rocky River police said family has been notified, but would not release the name of the officer Tuesday morning. An updated medical condition was not available as of Tuesday morning. Police say the shooting range at Lorain County JVS is not near student centers or activities. There were no students at the range, according to Rocky River police. The Lorain County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and Rocky River police is investigating the incident internally. The sheriff's office will investigate the incident, but Thomas said there won't be much to it.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/24/17: Bullets whizzed by a Fort Myers couple inside their apartment after their upstairs neighbor started shooting. Deputies say Richard Shield, 43, was high on heroin when he decided to clean his gun. The bullets went through the floor, then the ceiling and eventually hit the couch in the apartment below. The couple who live there said they heard a loud boom and then saw parts of their ceiling start to crumble. That's when they noticed two bullet holes just inches from where they were sitting. Devon Knowles is holding on to one of the bullets that almost hit him. "I honestly wasn't really thinking about it. It was more or less... just surviving." He said he was playing video games on his couch at the The Fountains at Forestwood on Brantley Road around 10 PM Monday, when the shooting game became a reality. "I just popped back like this, and a few minutes later pla! Pla! Gun shots came right through the ceiling." Knowles said he was in the line of fire and his cat lying next to him was almost hit. "You can see within inches of where everything happened." His wife Chrystal was in the bedroom. Both ran for cover, hid in their bathroom and called for help. "We didn't go outside because we didn't know if there was going to be a third, fourth, fifth shot," Devon said. "I was terrified, like, the 911 operator said are you in a safe place? And I said, no I am not in a safe place. There isn't anywhere safe. I don't know where to go!" Chrystal recalled. When deputies arrived, they told the couple the man they say hello to every day, their upstairs neighbor, was high on heroin. Deputies said they found the resident and a syringe at Shield's apartment, and that Shields was high when he decided to clean his Glock, accidentally firing two shots into the Knowles' home. "He was on heroin, and he's never struck me as the type of person that would have done something like that," Chrystal said. The couple said they're afraid Shield will return and they don't know what could happen next. "We just didn't know about what actually was happening up there," Devon said. "He could have killed my husband," Chrystal said. Shield remains in the Lee County Jail on drug and weapons charges. The Knowles said they're talking to the property managers about getting away from Shield.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/24/17: Police say a Philadelphia teenager was accidentally shot in the face by a friend who was trying to wake him for school. Philadelphia police Lt. John Walker said a 16-year-old was trying to wake his 17-year-old friend Monday morning. When the older teen wouldn't wake up, the 16-year-old pointed a gun at his face. Police say the 17-year-old then woke up and tried to push the gun away. The gun fired, hitting him in the eye. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police have not said if the 16-year-old will face charges.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/25/17: Authorities believe that a 14-year-old boy killed Tuesday inside a McKeesport home was the victim of an accidental shooting by his cousin. The alleged shooter, a 19-year-old man, told authorities that his cousin, Will Chaffin, showed up at his 1317 Ridge St. home with a shotgun Tuesday afternoon. The 19-year-old told authorities that he warned Will he was too young to have a gun and then said he tried to grab the firearm. But the weapon fired and the blast hit Will in the chest at point-blank range. The two teenagers were alone in the home during the shooting. The 19-year-old stayed at the scene afterwards. He was questioned by investigators but has not been charged in Will’s death or publicly named. Allegheny County Police said Tuesday that all the people “involved during the incident have been identified” and that District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. will determine whether criminal charges will be filed in the case. Will—called “Lil Will” by family and friends—was a popular eighth-grader. Dozens of people, including friends and relatives, came to the crime scene and watched with tears in their eyes as police investigated. At one point, part of the group formed a circle and bowed their heads in prayer.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/25/17: The brother of a 13-year-old shot and killed in Florida City is facing charges for her death in what some people are calling a tragic accident. Martaevious Santiago, 17, is charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child under 18 years of age and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. The shooting happened Tuesday night at 421 NW 167th Street. Tedra King, whose family and friends called her Rosie, was shot in the head when a gun her brother and friend were handling went off. Miami-Dade Police said her brother called 911 and stated he had shot his sister. When crews arrived, they pronounced her dead at the scene. “When my wife was down there with her, you know, I saw a handful of blood,” said her stepfather Vernon Williams. ” My reaction was to just grab them both. That was my reaction, you know, so no one would run.” Investigators found that Santiago was holding the loaded semi-automatic handgun when King was being playful with him because it was his birthday. They say she hugged her brother while he was holding the handgun. At some point, police say, she turned around to walk away and Santiago pointed the handgun to the back of King’s head and pulled the trigger, shooting her. The tragedy prompted strong words Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. “When a 13-year-old is shot by her brother after getting a gun from a friend, the question must be asked, how can this happen? Who’s responsible for safeguarding the use of guns in our community,” asked Carvalho. “Why are children having access to guns on the streets of Miami, as well as in our homes? It is unacceptable and the community needs to step up and deal with this issue. The availability of guns side by side with the murderous code of silence does not allow for information to be brought forth to law enforcement and it’s victimizing kids in our community. Enough is enough.” A family friend spoke to CBS4’s Peter D’Oench and called it a tragic accident. “He didn’t mean to kill his sister because every picture that they take it’s always Popeye and Rosie and they always together,” said family friend Shamara Perpall. “This was a freak accident that shouldn’t have never even happened.”

(LINK REMOVED), 4/25/17: An 18-year-old who claimed she was grazed by a bullet fired into a home made the whole thing up, Central Falls police said Wednesday. Police said Lisa Henriquez actually shot herself by accident while she and two others were playing with a gun in the Parker Street home Tuesday afternoon. According to police, the three thought the gun was not loaded. When officers responded to the reported shooting, police said Henriquez and others at the house told officers that a gunman had fired through the window, then ran off. Police said several more officers rushed to the Parker Street address to search for a suspect and other possible victims. After she was treated for a gunshot wound to her cheek at Rhode Island Hospital, police said they charged Henriquez with obstructing officers and firing a gun in a compact area. Police said they also charged a 16-year-old boy, claiming he was in possession of the gun. Police said the boy also tried to hide the gun from officers. According to police, Henriquez was released on $50,000 personal recognizance following her arraignment Wednesday morning. The 16-year-old was arraigned in Family Court and ordered held at the Training School.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/25/17: A search of vehicle in which a Hinsdale, N.H., man claims he was accidentally shot by a Colt 1911 didn't turn up the firearm, but it did turn up a number of items, such as marijuana, a "possible stolen safe (and) credit card," empty liquor bottles, a 7mm handgun and pill bottles. On Tuesday, April 25, at 5 PM, the Windham County Sheriff's Office received a report of an accidental shooting at the boat landing near the Vernon Hydroelectric Dam. The victim, identified as Shawn J. Gailey, 20, of Hinsdale, N.H., was initially driven to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and later transported by ambulance to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., for treatment of gun shot wounds to his right hand and his right leg. Gailey had a single gunshot wound through his right hand and another in his right leg. The bullet had entered Gailey's inner thigh and shattered his femur, which was put back together by doctors at Dartmouth Hitchcock. Clark told the Reformer on April 27 that while the investigation was ongoing, there are a number of unresolved questions about how the shooting actually occurred. "We are assuming it was a single round, but given some inconsistencies, we are not sure," he said. The search of the vehicle, which was conducted on April 27, is part of the sheriff's investigation. An emergency room nurse at BMH told Windham County Sheriff Keith Clark that Gailey had been brought to the hospital in a vehicle "with a lot of blood on the passenger's side." After delivering Gailey to the ER, the driver and a passenger left the scene in the vehicle. According to an affidavit attached to the search warrant, Gailey told Clark he was in the passenger seat of the vehicle with the Colt 1911 handgun in his lap when he dropped his iPad onto the weapon, causing it to fire. But Clark, who writes that he himself owns a Colt 1911, notes the handgun is designed with various safety features including a grip safety that requires the firearm to be "properly gripped" before it will fire. "The victim's statement is inconsistent with the known features of the Colt Model 1911," wrote Clark. Gailey also told Clark that he had possessed the gun for "a couple of months," but did not purchase it. Gailey said he found it near powerlines in Chesterfield, N.H. When Clark asked where the gun was, Gailey said it had been tossed into the water near Cersosimo Lumber on Route 142 because "we got scared." At 9:40 PM on April 25, a deputy located the vehicle Gailey had been riding in at the Vernon Dam boat launch. Two people were in the car, noted Deputy Joshua Parro, and there was "a significant amount of blood and tissue on the floor, seat and door on the front passenger side ..." The driver of the vehicle admitted to Parro that she was with Gailey when he shot himself and that they had been smoking marijuana when he took the gun out and was cleaning it. "She later said she thought he was changing the grips. She said the gun went off once striking Gailey." The driver confirmed Gailey's statement that on the way to the hospital, the firearm was thrown into the Connecticut River. The firearm has not yet been located, according to the affidavit. In September 2016, Gailey was found guilty of misdemeanor criminal mischief in Hinsdale. According to the Keene Sentinel, In February 2016, he intentionally damaged another person's vehicle by pouring one or more items into the gas tank, puncturing a tire and smearing tuna fish on the interior of the vehicle. He was sentenced to 12 months in jail, with all but three months suspended, and ordered to pay $2,559 in restitution to his victim. He was also ordered to tour the New Hampshire State Prison and to undergo an anger management evaluation and follow through on all recommendations.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/25/17: A 31-year-old Battle Creek woman accidentally shot herself in the leg Tuesday and later was arrested on a charge of child abuse. Battle Creek police said they were notified of the shooting at 8:02 PM Tuesday in the 100 block of Waubascon Road. The woman told police she didn't realize the 9mm handgun was loaded and she accidentally shot herself. She was taken to Bronson Battle Creek for treatment. While there the woman's parents approached Battle Creek officers at 1:11 AM Wednesday and said a 10-year-old daughter of the woman said she had been assaulted by her mother. The girl told officers that a couple hours before the shooting she accidentally bumped a baggie of pills which spilled into a heating grate. The girl said her mother began to yell at her and then threw her to the ground and punched her in the head, slapped her, kicked her in the side and choked her. The girl said she is frequently assaulted by her mother. Police said they arrested the woman on charges of assault by strangulation and child abuse in the third degree. Six children living in the house were placed in the custody of other family members.

According to witnesses, a man called 911 after accidentally shooting a 13-year-old in the leg. The child was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay, according to sources. The investigation is ongoing.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/25/17: A student sitting near a Taco Bell on campus reached into his backpack and fired a gun in the bag by mistake Tuesday, Utah Valley University reported. The blast went off about 2:30 PM in a popular food court. The bullet hit a table and a light near the Jamba Juice and Taco Bell, but did not strike anyone, said UVU spokesman Layton Shumway. Campus police responded to a report of a shot in the dining area between the Physical Education and Liberal Arts buildings. The student had a valid concealed carry permit, Shumway said. Utah law allows people with the license to carry firearms at the state's public colleges. UVU is not releasing the student's name, and university police are investigating, Shumway said. UVU police did not immediately return a message left Wednesday afternoon. In 2015, a gun accidentally (LINK REMOVED)at UVU and grazed a student's chest in the education building. He had surgery for an injury police said was minor.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/25/17: A 40-year-old man faces multiple charges in the April shooting of an infant. Jail and booking records show Jeremiah James Halper was booked Friday into Clark County Detention Center on child abuse charges, on which he’s being held without bail. Halper also faces unrelated drug charges. He has prior felony convictions of forgery charges in 2010 and drug charges in 2013 and 2014, according to court records. Metropolitan Police Department documents implicate Halper in a shooting where a(LINK REMOVED) Metro officers responded about 11:10 AM April 25 to an apartment complex on the 300 block of Harmon Avenue, near Koval Lane, where the baby was shot. The baby was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. Gunfire from a neighboring apartment went through a wall and struck the child, police said at the time. Halper faces six counts related to the incident: 3 counts each of child abuse or neglect with substantial bodily or mental harm; 1 count of discharging a gun within a prohibited structure or vehicle; 1 count of owning or possessing a gun by a prohibited person; 1 count of battery resulting in substantial bodily harm.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/25/17: A shooting that seriously injured a 19-year-old Lubbock man last week was ruled accidental, Lubbock police said Tuesday. The man’s release release from a Lubbock hospital came a week after the April 25 shooting at a South Lubbock apartment complex, according to Lubbock police spokeswoman Tiffany Pelt. Police were called about 5:30 PM April 25 to the Enclave Apartments near 71st Street and Utica Avenue in reference to a shooting. “The caller said that his friend just shot himself,” a police report states. Upon arrival, police found the injured, shirtless man on his hands and knees with a witness holding a throw blanket on the man’s chest and back. A second witness poured water over the man’s head upon his request as he said he was feeling ill. According to the report, other responding officers arrived on scene and the initial officer noted he was told the gun was taken to a different location. Police at the scene reported finding a spent shell on the apartment’s floor in front of the couch, and live 9 mm rounds were scattered around the carpet. The officer also located a bullet hole in the left-side of a television. “(The suspect) said that (the wounded man) was jumping around in front of him and (the suspect) stood up to get off the couch and then gun went off,” the officer notes. There were blood drops on the sidewalk, in the entry hallway, and a bloody-hand print on the closet door. The officer notes the unspent rounds allegedly came from one of the involved parties attempting to unload the magazine. Over the course of the investigation, 18-year-old Madison Oglesby was arrested at a home in the 2000 block of 35th Street on charges of tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance, according to A-J Media records. Pelt said that, after questioning all involved individuals, including the wounded man, LPD investigators determined the shooting was accidental. Court documents show Oglesby has since been released from the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $20,000 bond. No further information was released.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/25/17: The death of a man who police said was accidentally shot by his son Tuesday on Robinwood Drive has been ruled a homicide, the 10th in Allen County this year. The AllenCounty coroner today identified the victim as Frank Lax, 65. Police said Lax's son accidentally shot him in the 4000 block of Robinwood Drive. Officers were called to a home between Rudisill Boulevard and Baxter Street at 11:50 AM. The men were handling a gun when it went off. The father was taken to a hospital in critical condition but later died, police said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/26/17: A 3-year-old is being treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder at a downtown Louisville hospital, and police believe another child shot her. Dwight Mitchell, a spokesman for the Louisville Metro Police Department, said the girl's injury is not considered life-threatening. She was brought by private vehicle to Norton Children's Hospital about 11:45 AM Wednesday. The shooting happened at Henry M. Greene apartments in the 1000 block of W. Jefferson Street. It appears to have been an accident, Mitchell said. A woman who lives next door to the apartment where the shooting happened said the bullet went through her bedroom wall and that if she has been in bed, the bullet would have hit her, too. "I heard a big boom," the woman, who didn't want to be identified said. "I looked through the hole to see if I could see through. It's a little frightening." Where the gun was or how the child was able to access it remains unknown. "I work right in the midst of gun violence in the city and all too often it seems to be innocent children," apartment maintenance supervisor Vincent Henderson said. The message neighbors are sharing about guns, is an important one. "When it comes to guns, children, and having them in the household, keep them secured and locked away at all times," Henderson said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/26/17: A 17-year-old resident of Athens Gardens was treated for a gunshot wound Wednesday morning at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, Athens-Clarke County police said. The teen claimed he was holding a pistol by his side when it accidentally went off, sending a bullet through his leg, according to police. Two friends who accompanied the teen to the hospital backed up that account, but none would say where it occurred, police said. After some investigation, police said they identified a location in Oglethorpe County where it might have happened, and the case was handed over to that county’s sheriff’s office for further investigation, police said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/26/17: A 63-year-old man was injured Wednesday night after he accidentally shot himself in the arm, police say. Officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of Stowe Drive about 9:40 PM Wednesday, Lawrence Police Officer Drew Fennelly said in a written response to questions. They found that the man had accidentally shot himself while he was cleaning the firearm at home. The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, Fennelly said. An update on his condition was not available Thursday. Fennelly said additional information regarding the incident was not immediately available Thursday because the police reports were not yet complete.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/27/17: Law enforcement authorities in Barton County are investigating a shooting. Just before 8 PM Thursday, police were dispatched to 4900 12th Street in reference to a man who had been shot, according to a media release. The victim of the shooting, Michael Workman, 20, was treated on scene by EMS for a wound in the area of his side and back, according to police. He was transported him to Great Bend Regional Medical Center, stabilized and then transported to St Francis Hospital in Wichita. Officers found that several other people were in the house at the time of the shooting. One witness, who was in the room with the victim at the time of the shooting, claims that the shooting was accidental. There have been no arrests.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/27/17: Coldwater Police say a man accidentally shot himself late Thursday night with a stolen weapon and then lied about the circumstances surrounding the shooting when he was interviewed by police. Coldwater Public Safety Director Mark Bartell says officers were dispatched to the Community Health Center of Branch County for a man with a gunshot wound. Bartell says initial statements made by the 24-year-old Coldwater man indicated he was shot in the back yard of his residence on Waterman Avenue by an unknown male. A female friend who was also at the residence during the incident then drove the man to the hospital. According to Bartell, officers through interviews were able to determine the man was not being truthful about what was initially reported and found that the man had accidentally shot himself while in possession of a stolen firearm. Attempts were made to hide the firearm but officers found it hidden on the man’s property. Bartell says the man suffered extensive injuries to his hand and thigh area. He was initially treated at C.H.C. before being transferred to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. Coldwater Police will forward a report to the Branch County Prosecutor’s Office that will request numerous charges

(LINK REMOVED), 4/28/17: A man hunting turkeys in the Wayne National Forest was injured in an accidental shooting Friday morning. According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, the victim said he was hunting just off of fire road 1981B in Union Township. He said he had turkey decoys set up and was calling turkeys when he was shot from behind. Deputies said he had multiple shotgun pellet wounds to his backside. All of the wounds appeared to be superficial, investigators said. The victim and the other hunter involved made their way to the roadway to await help. The victim was taken to a Zanesville area hospital for treatment. The Sheriff’s office turned the investigation over to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for further investigation.

According to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office the boy and an 11-year old girl related to him were playing with a gun when it was fired. The boy was taken to WakeMed for treatment.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/28/17: A teen is in serious condition on Friday following what Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio is calling an accidental shooting. Cameron County Sheriff's deputies responded to a traffic accident on the 2200 block of South Browne Road shortly after 12:00 PM. Upon arrival, deputies found 18-year-old Adrian Bautista inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the chest. According to Lucio, 18-year-old Jose Gonzalez shot Bautista with a .40 Caliber pistol at an apartment on the 2200 block of South Indiana. Gonzalez was driving Bautista to the hospital when the traffic accident occurred, according to Lucio. Deputies are investigating if there was an altercation before the accidental shooting. Gonzalez is being detained by deputies, and may face charges.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/28/17: A 17-year-old boy has been charged with reckless endangerment after accidentally shooting a 15-year-old boy at a Dickinson residence early Friday morning. The Dickinson Police Department says just before 1 AM, the 17-year-old was recklessly brandishing a loaded handgun when it fired, hitting the 15-year-old victim. The victim's friends took him to CHI St. Alexius Health Dickinson and he was later transferred to Bismarck with non-life threatening injuries. The incident is still under investigation.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/29/17: Deputies responded to a shopping center parking lot about 4:36 PM Saturday after receiving reports of a man being assaulted and possibly shot. Deputies found Chris Chow, 54, at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Chow shot himself during a road rage incident also involving 21-year-old Chance Givens, which started near Petaluma Road and Mall Boulevard, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. Chow was the driver of his car and Givens was a passenger in a car driven by his girlfriend. According to sheriff’s investigators, Chow pulled into a parking lot on Bear Valley Road, west of Amargosa Road, and Givens followed him. Givens got out of his car and “confronted Chow about his driving,” officials said, and then began repeatedly punching Chow in the face. Chow has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon, and told investigators he pulled his handgun from his waistband because he feared for his safety and that of his wife. Chow’s gun accidentally went off while he was retrieving it and resulted in him shooting himself in the leg, sheriff’s officials said. Givens and his girlfriend fled from the scene after the shooting, but Givens was apprehended a short time later. His girlfriend returned to the scene on her own. Givens was cited and released at the scene, sheriff’s officials said. Chow was transported to a local hospital for a non-life threatening gunshot wound, as well as the injuries suffered during the physical assault.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/29/17: A Detroit-area firearms instructor has been charged in the accidental shooting and wounding of a man attending a gun training class. The Wayne County prosecutor's office says 44-year-old Michael Hearn of Farmington Hills is expected to be arraigned Tuesday on a misdemeanor careless, reckless or negligent use of a firearm charge. Prosecutors say Hearn was teaching a concealed pistol license class at a gun range in Livonia on April 29 when a shot was fired through a door and into a second classroom. A Detroit man attending gun training in the second classroom was struck in both legs.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/29/17: Police in Hardin County are looking for a teenager they say accidentally shot another teen. The shooting happened Saturday night on Daneswood Court in Radcliff. Police say a 13 year old boy was shot in the abdomen by a 17 year old who was showing off the gun. The 13 year old was taken to the hospital where he is expected to be okay. Police say they are still looking for the 17 year old and are considering whether charges will be filed.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/29/17: An Indianapolis man was injured Saturday evening while handling a gun. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department says Thomas Moon, 21, was feeling out the trigger on a gun when it went off and struck him in the left hand. The incident happened in Pleasant View. There’s no further word on Moon’s medical condition.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/29/17: A 20-year-old man was killed Saturday afternoon in a shooting, police say. Chesapeake police spokesperson Kelly Elliott says officers were called to Seaboard Avenue around 3:50 PM for a report of an accidental shooting. Witnesses told officers two people were handling a shotgun when it went off, hitting 20-year-old Jaonta Wyche in the face. Wyche was pronounced dead at the scene. “It’s the most people I’ve seen on this block,” said resident Kenneth Caldarera. Caldarera said crowds grew as news spread of the shooting. “I had heard the muffled shot. I didn’t think much of it, so I went in the house,” he said. Caldarera says he had been sitting on his porch at the time and went inside to make a sandwich. “Came outside, the cop cars were flying down here. People were in the front yard screaming. There were two young gentlemen out of control screaming, flopping around on the ground. We couldn’t deduce what was going on,” he said. Caldarera says he sensed something bad happened when the victim’s mother showed up. “It’s really sad. It’s really sad,” he said. Police have charged 20-year-old Juan Perry with voluntary manslaughter. The two men were reportedly friends. “It’s real sad. You know this stuff has to stop. It’s out of control around here,” he said.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/29/17: A 29-year-old male appeared to have accidentally shot himself in the leg in the 900 block of Conestoga Boulevard at approximately 4:06 PM Saturday, according to 911. Medics at the scene reported the man was awake and alert, but will likely be hospitalized for serious bleeding. Scanner reports indicated emergency responders are not yet sure if he was alone at the time. No further details were immediately available. The man's identity was withheld.

(LINK REMOVED), 4/29/17: A Fairbanks man was arraigned today in Fairbanks Superior Court for allegedly shooting another man by accident after he went to the man's apartment to confront him. 37-year-old Adrian Mendizabal is charged with Attempted Murder, Assault, and Tampering with physical evidence. According to officials, the Fairbanks Police Department received a call on April 29 that a shooting occurred near 11th Avenue. Police responded and found that the victim, Vernon Smoke, had been shot. A few minutes after the shooting, Mendizabal reported to authorities that he had accidentally shot Smoke. He told police he had heard that Smoke and some other individuals were "out to get him," so he went to Smoke's apartment and waited for him inside. When Smoke arrived, Mendizabal said the gun went off by accident. Smoke was medevaced to Seattle with life-threatening injuries.

I’ll just wrap up by recalling the Utah Valley University accident and note that that is the second time UVU has made the GunFAIL list, the first being in May 2015, when one police academy cadet accidentally shot another while taking his gun apart, forgetting there was a round in the chamber. Back in 2012, a student at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, accidentally discharged his concealed weapon. And it was in Taylorsville, Utah, in September 2014 when a sixth grade teacher injured herself when she accidentally shot and shattered a toilet in the faculty bathroom with her (not very well) concealed handgun.

So, you know, keep that all in mind as more states begin to permit campus carry and allow teachers to arm themselves in the classroom. (Pennsylvania has decided to go next, by the way.) After all, that’s actually the reason I try to keep track of how frequent gun accidents of all kinds really are.

Well not really. That is just another one of your lies. But it sure is the reason I tore up my NRA membership and sent it back to them more than 35 years ago when I figured out they could really give a shit less about my gun rights and one of their primary purposes was to push conservative politics.

American gun ownership drops to lowest in nearly 40 years

The percent of American households owning guns is at a near-40 year low in the latest CBS News poll released this month.

According to the survey, which was conducted among 1,001 Americans in the aftermath of the Orlando nightclub shooting, 36 percent of U.S. adults either own a firearm personally, or live with someone who does. That's the lowest rate of gun ownership in the CBS poll going back to 1978. It's down 17 points from the highest recorded rate in 1994, and nearly 10 percentage points from 2012.

Different national polls tend to show slightly different rates of gun ownership. The latest household gun ownership rate in the General Social Survey, in 2014, was 32 percent. The October 2015 Gallup survey showed a higher rate of 43 percent, including guns kept on property outside the home.

But the downward trend in gun ownership remains consistent across the national polls. According to Gallup, gun ownership has fallen by about 10 percentage points since its peak in 1993. The General Social Survey shows a 20-point drop since the mid-1970s.

But gun purchases, as measured by FBI firearm background checks, are at historic highs. And data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms shows that gun manufacturers are churning out record numbers of guns. Many gun rights advocates argue that these figures mean that the overall number of gun owners is growing: If more guns are being sold, more people must be owning guns.

But the declining rates of gun ownership across three major national surveys suggest a different explanation: that most of the rise in gun purchases is driven by existing gun owners stocking up, rather than by people buying their first gun. A Washington Post analysis last year found that the average American gun owner now owns approximately eight firearms, double the number in the 1990s.

Other research bears this out as well. A 2004 survey found that the average gun owner owned 6.6 firearms, and that the top 3 percent of gun owners owned about 25 guns each. More recently, a CBS News poll taken in March of this year found that roughly 1 in 5 gun owners owned 10 guns or more.

Gun owners remain a potent political force in the U.S., due largely to the successful efforts of advocacy groups like the NRA. But survey data showing declining gun ownership suggests that the NRA has been successful largely by channeling the energy and intensity of an existing gun-owning base, rather than by broadening that base and bringing more supporters into the fold. If declines in ownership continue, the group could have a hard time replicating recent successes in the coming decades.

Hello Dave. Thanks again for starting this great thread. But no I don't need to start another thread. For one the point I am making here is idiots should not have guns. Because in case you didn't notice guns are dangerous and idiots cannot be trusted to be safe and responsible with them. And also I would be more than happy to see some of the same restrictions and safeguards we have on alcohol and vehicles put on guns. In fact why do we have laws against driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol but we don't have any laws against operating a firearm under the influence of alcohol? Because a lot of the people involved in the accidents I post aren't just idiots. They are drunk idiots.

Fortunately or unfortunately, our constitution doesn't exclude idiots from owning guns. I also wish that their was an idiot exclusion for guns, cars and reproduction. It would make the world a better place.
