in open waters , in this day and age ?

(US warship and container ship off coast of Japan)
    That's extraordinary ,
    who went to sleep.

The warship has damage to her starboard side , (just forward of midship it looks like) ,
so she did not have right of way , normally , if they were crossing.
It looks like it was pretty much a straight on hit by the other ship ,
which would indicate she was not overtaking ,
and should have had right of way , unless she was abaft abeam.
    BUT , who knows.
In any case , both should have been on watch , and all have a duty to avoid others , even if they have right of way.
    No excuses.

    Going to be interesting

I have reason to believe that the container ship did not detect or saw them. Not even the men aboard who was posted on watch duty did not pay attention to any ships in their visual range.

    1. slutwolf
What reason do you have ?
      and
Why did the warship not take avoidance action ?

Both have equal absolute responsibility to avoid collision.

No such thing as an honest mistake when it comes to such things. There should have been at least 6 sailors on watch on the warship, anyone of them should have seen something. The officer of the deck, the helmsmen, the quartermaster, the lead botswainsmate, the signalman, and the aft lookout.

    Honest mistake , mmm ,
that'll go down well under maritime law :)

    But the point ,
the big question , is how the fuck ?
    Neither is a lil dingy.

7 missing and 3 injured is a "shit happens" scenario?
[IMG] Yeah that seems like no big deal doesn't it, just a few million tax payer dollars to fix something tat NEVER should of happened if the NAVY vessel had not run into a commercial ship no less than 12 miles from land.

[IMG]Seems that container ships fare better on impact than US NAVY ships do.

      I wouldn't
      The bow always.
a bit like a huge axe running into a virtually immovable box , at who knows , 20 knots ? if not faster.

We had to be pushed sideways once after loosing all power suddenly , mid stream in Auckland harbour .
It took all 4,000 tug horsepower to get us moving , and not quick , just a lot quicker out of the shipping lane than fucking round getting a tow rigged .
But it was a fucking awesome display of power.
If we'd been hit bow on by a freighter , we'd have been cut in half.

If you look at the hit damages it is clear what happened because the damages are on the same sides of the ships involved. I am not a sailor or a NAVY member so I will relate it in terms I know. The NAVY ship was that rich asshole in the SUV that wanted to turn left but was in the right hand lane and turned anyways and ran into the Toyota in the left turn lane. Again American arrogance.

[IMG]The US ship had just returned from upgrades that cost the American people $21million in February, now there is water pouring in from below the water line because a ship 1/3 the size of another didn't move 100 feet.

Yeah , latest just said she's now not considered in danger of sinking.
Has four compartments flooded , being pumped out.

All seems like a bit of stupidity.

Did the Navy not see ,
or ignore the rules and think she was fast enough to get across in front ,
      or ?
Was nobody actually watching on the merchant ship ,
      not see , how ,
or she make a sudden turn having not seen ?

      Whatever it beggers belief

The NAVY ship was traveling at 3 knots in a restricted travel lane and struck a vessel 3 times it's size, this is more of a matter of complete American arrogance than anything else.

Ah , I was hoping someone had more info.
      That's even more stupid.
A restricted lane is restricted for reasons , usually amount of traffic.

It also means much more vigilance , and readiness to avoid,
      and usually big ships ,
and often that bigger ships will have restricted maneuverability .

The United States ships can handle attacks but they were not designed to handle accident or ramming.

It was a container ship sudden turns aren't in their running sheet, though it could be if you think you could float the containers individually to the dock after you've flipped them into the ocean.

I don't know the maritime rules however I'd imagine if you have a ship three times the size of the one you're on you'd try your best to get out of their way as quick as possible.

Maritime law is quite clear ,
    and the basics simple.

A ship showing you a red , port hand light , has right of way.
You may not pass in front of any vessel unless there is clear room to do so without endangering or inconveniencing the other ,
and be well clear before they reach your track.
That means basically if you can see them don't.
If you are overtaking , or approaching from abaft abeam , behind her midships ,
    you must give way.
All overtaking ships must stay clear.
You must be on watch at all times.
Regardless of right of way , you must do all nescassary to avoid collision.

International maritime rules for collision avoidance do not define right of way for any one vessel, but provide common standards for signaling between ships, as well as regulations on posting lookouts.

That being said, I expect a higher degree of professionalism and diligence from the US Navy personal piloting an advanced US warship in international waters.

Maritime law dose define absolutely who has right of way and who should give way in the first instance.

The simple basic rule is port to port.

Unless things have been changed very recently , its been that way for the 60 odd years I've been at sea , and long before ,
and certainly was when I sat my skippers ticket.
There are of course many more rules , and rules for special circumstances , and for special types of vessels , and so on , some of which I've outlined briefly and simply elsewhere.

But after the basic , the primary is to take avoiding action at all times , regardless of who has right of way ,
so in the end that trumps all else ,
IF you failed in the first instance.

One of the first and most important things to know.

If the other vessel , any other vessel , is not changing station ,
YOU ARE ON A COLLISION COURSE
      take avoidance action.
      It is that simple

Yes, ships are required to pass port to port. But that doesn't determine who has the right of way.

Lol , if you're port to port , your OK.
If your starboard to port , the port has right of way.
Go teach your grandma to suck eggs.

I've navigated many ports , channels , shipping lanes and all , including the inside passage down the great barrier reef , and I have to know what all ships in close proximity , and or approaching should do , and what I must do.
Just as I must always at all times be prepared to avoid if nescassary , no matter what.

Nope the Rubber Ducky (60' or a 6 story building tall) is currently being towed up the Great Lakes to celebrate Canada's/Ontario's 150th anniversary.

What a rubber ducky has to do with these celebrations is I do not know.

No one has made a joke about missing sailors you morbid fuck. Nothing wrong with joking about piloting skills of those involved. One other thing you whining sack of shit, not everyone knows that any sailors are missing. I saw one story on the news and there was no mention of it. Maybe everyone doesn't have the time that you possess to watch intently on a secondary story. Or maybe they can't sift through all the leftist media barrage talking about Trump. Whichever, grow a funny bone or fuck off.
