One of the rules I remember is that the burdened ship has the right of way. Mass in motion is harder to change course.

The search for seven US sailors lost at sea after a Navy destroyer collided with a container ship four times its size continued off the coast of Japan.

The USS Fitzgerald was back at its home port in Yokosuka Naval Base south of Tokyo by sunset Saturday. The Philippine-flagged container ship was berthed at Tokyo’s Oi wharf, where officials were questioning crew members about the cause of the nighttime crash.
    • After stabailizing the USS Fitzgerald, the destroyer USS Dewey joined other American and Japanese vessels and aircraft in the search for the missing sailors.

Family members were frantically seeking news, appealing via social media for calls from sailors aboard from the ship.

The U.S. 7th Fleet said in a statement that the crash damaged two berthing spaces, a machinery room and the radio room. Most of the more than 200 sailors aboard would have been asleep in their berths at the time of the pre-dawn crash.

Water was being pumped out of flooded areas and it was unclear how long it would take to get into the crushed mid-right side of the ship once it was at the pier in Yokosuka, the statement said.

Nippon Yusen, the Japanese shipping company that operates the container ship, said in a statement it is collaborating with the ship owner and fully cooperating with the investigation by the coast guard. The 29,060-ton ship is Philippine-flagged and all the crew are Filipinos.

The USS Fitzgerald's captain, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, was airlifted early Saturday to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka and was in stable condition with a head injury, the Navy said. Two other crew members suffered cuts and bruises and were evacuated. It was unclear how many others may have been hurt.

The Navy said that the collision occurred 56 nautical miles (103 kilometers) southwest of Yokosuka, home to the 7th Fleet.

"Right now we are focused on two things: the safety of the ship and the well-being of the sailors," said Adm. Scott Swift, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Conditions were clear at the time of the collision, though Yutaka Saito of the coast guard said the area is particularly busy with sea traffic.

The names of the missing sailors were being withheld pending notification of their families. U.S. Navy personnel set up support and counseling services to help families as they sought updates on crew members.

"Just heard the sweetest voice and saw a wonderful face. He's okay. Thank you all for the prayers," Rita Schrimsher of Athens, Alabama, tweeted after speaking with her 23-year-old grandson, Jackson Schrimsher, via Facetime.

"It could have been worse, so we're grateful," she said by phone.

From some looking I have found a few more detailed articles that describe the incident. Supposedly the NAVY is saying that the ACX Crystal had performed a u-turn about 25 minutes prior to the collision and was traveling at 14.6knots (15.8mph). The vessels service speed is 23knots but in a restricted shipping lane that would be unlikely as is a u-turn in a narrow lane. (As is based on the vessel tracker websites route map for the ship)

upload_2017-6-18_0-24-28.png The yellow line is to highlight the vessels route and clearly shows that there was no u-turn.

This software is designed to show a real time GPS stamp of a vessels location and is used in narrow waterways to see to within 3 feet where the ship is located based on the contours of the shipping lanes and underwater hazards, if for any reason the software was not working the captain would have had it fixed before sailing in a congested waterway. All you are tossing up now is excuses for blatantly false information being released to take blame from the NAVAL vessel.

but i am not blaming the US Navy vessel. i'm curious about the cargo ship. it was built in 2008, so it should have kept with constant upgrades and testing before leaving the port. but we won't know for sure.

The USS Fitzgerald was commissioned in 1995 so it would be better to question that it was outdated since military vessels are not required to have or report an AIS system.

hmm.. that would be the cause probably.. but last i heard most Naval vessels have been modernized.

Somebody should have been observing all around with their eyeballs ,
    and somebody watching radar.

To rely in tracks etc. is not prudent seamanship. Its a recipe for disaster.

If the container ship did a u turn in close waters , that could certainly make things very tricky very quickly ,
but that is why you must be actually observing all around , literally.

Reports say it did do a u turn ,
    the track above says not.
Perfect illustration of why eyes are best , assisted by other technology.

I've seen to many anomalies to ever rely on technology over observation.

A u turn in that area would seem a very strange manoeuvre.
    Certainly a WTF moment.

    Going to be interesting.
At the moment , it's still just two ships failed to avoid each other.

They are claiming that the "turn" was made 25 minutes prior to impact so at the alleged speed of the container ship there would have been enough time to change course if someone on the smaller ship was awake. Ships can only maneuver based on the draft lines and the depth of channels, plus traffic restrictions in a busy port.

    reported position if collision

    56n miles SW of Yokosuka
    12n miles off Izu Peninsula

That means they were outside the area covered by the map above.
    by maybe 8-10 miles
    Effectively in open water

So it is likely they had sufficient room for avoidance.

If the reported position is correct , the map above is irrelevant ,
    and somewhat misleading.
Certainly our news reports stated it was off shore in open water , as reported position suggests.
56nm is about 63 statute miles

Pretty much once south of , yes , 12 nm off , you'd be in open water.

It is of course a subjective term , relative to what you're talking about.
In inshore , coastal shipping and fishing terms , 12 miles offshore , we would certainly consider open water.
Anywhere outside of restricted navigation is basically open.

Compared to the map shown ,
      certainty open water.

Of course if your talking ocean racing , and shipping , you may not consider it open water till your way out.

When I'm fishing 12 miles out here ,
there's nuthin between me n Chile , but 4,500 nm of open water , and I'm certainly in it.

The sailors killed were probably sleeping with their beds closed up at the time they were rammed.
They would have never know what hit them, probably died in their sleep.

Oh give it up you pathetic lying phony coward. You and some of your buddies already proved you could give a shit less about those seamen. The whole wreck was just one big joke to them.

And besides after you committed forum suicide with this thread you are nothing but a laughingstock anyway.

I may have missed something, but I didn't see anyone making a joke about seven servicemen being killed on this thread. If anyone has an issue with Msman or anyone else posting on this thread they may wish to take it elsewhere. I have several friends and family members who were USN servicemen and I don't appreciate negative comments about Americans being killed.

I had not heard that they were killed and yes that is a tragedy and my condolences got out to their families and to the loss the Navy and all service personnel are experiencing.

And I agree 100% that military members are off limits when trolling/slamming/flaming ...

BUT as for ms.man, he is a first class A-hole and is fair game regardless of thread ... and considering he claims to be former military which I discount, he might want to dial it back a notch.

I would like to apologize to everyone. I didn't realize my argument with another member would be scattered to all of the other threads.
I have a great respect for our military and those who serve. It makes my heart sad when even a single person is killed serving their country.
There is no way I can be a part of any disrespect for our servicemen. My part of the argument is over.
I know the feeling when you lose a loved one. Especially when they gave their life for their country and it's people.

I wasn't referring to any of your posts. I found @stumblers thread directed to the seven dead servicemen very distasteful and inflammatory. You are the bigger man for apologizing though.

@stumbler: My uncle served 12 years in the USN. My cousin served 6 years in the USN. A friend of mine served 6 years in the USN. I attempted to join the USN when I was 18, but was turned down due to my weight at the time. I do not appreciate anyone dishonoring those that serve, especially those who give their lives in the line of duty. Especially one who has never served. Say anything you want about me, but do not dishonor the men and women who serve our country. They are deserving of our honor and respect.

    Which thread?.

Stumbler hasn't posted a thread on the sailors...... The only thread about that was this one posted by Slutwolf.

I suggest you reread post #20 where he slams others for making light of the subject.

You didn't look. So why don't you try doing that before you run your phony mouth.

No one can believe a fucking word you say @msman. After all the lies you posted on your "resume" thread it is obvious you will lie about anything and everything because you are a truily disgusting phony lying coward.

You are a liar. The thread I posted was to prove that no one can believe a fucking thing msman says because he is a truly disgusting and pathetic phony lying coward. And I was the one on this thread a day or so ago pointing out just how fucking disgusting it was for Americans to be cracking jokes and laughing it up on this thread when we still had seven Navy servicemen still missing.

So don't you dare try to pull any phony outrage shit on me.

Bullshit. You tell this phony crap to your buddies. And by all means read Magpie's post below because he is telling the truth.

Thank you Magpie. And as you can probably tell it still pisses me off the way Americans were joking about this tragedy when we still had crew members missing and presumed dead and other crew members still in the hospital.

And even more so when they try to pretend all self righteous about it.

It seems that Stumbler has a bug up for msman. I don't care why and there apparently is already a separate thread for fighting. I have reread the posts, including #20. No one has joked about the deaths about the servicemen. If members wish to attack each other they may wish to contain it to those threads they created to do so. No one who has posted before has stated that they don't give a shit about the US servicemen. To the contrary they have expressed their deepest condolences to these fallen heroes.

Now which is it FeltPlay. Are you as big of a pathetic, phony, pathological liar as @msman? Or are you just trying to brag you are the dumbest non-fuckers in the world.

Because on the one hand it is very hard to believe that someone would not know seven seamen were missing since that was one of the first things reported on every fucking news story about it from the story broke and you would have to get your news exclusively from the forum GD not to know that.

Or on the other hand you and your buddies would be making jokes about an accident that you know nothing about which in that case would be even more disgusting becausae the ship nearly sunk and there could have been 100's of casualties.

So which is it. Are you a pathological liar or the dumbest non-fucker in the world?
