We Europeans have very stereotype ideas about the Americans, but how do the Americans see the British and the Europeans?

I don't have anything against them. However, I don't feel the love from many Europeans. I was going to take a cruise to the Greek Islands, Rome and Barcelona next May. We decided not to go because of unrest in Barcelona, the way Americans are thought of over there and crazy Muslims trying to kill pedestrians in tourist areas with their cars.

I'll take my chances and spend my vacation dollars here in the USA.

 

Everything that I know about the UK I learned on TV from reliable sources.

 

I was a kid when I lived in England for 4 years. Loved living there, and I did see the ugly American every once in a while. i had been there for about a year, and was in a shop when an American couple came in and looked around. The wife asked the clerk how much something was in "real money". They were asked to leave.

Not a fan of the French or Irish.

 

Nobody is.

 

Many times the rude Americans people notice in other countries are the same when they are at home in the U.S.

 

What actually are those "very stereotyped ideas about the Americans" that you Europeans have? I am not trying to start an argument. I am curious.

My guess is that the more civilized Europeans think of the United States as a violent, vulgar, uncouth country, run by the Republican Party for the benefit of America's rich with the support of a white proletariat that is so stupid and ignorant that it does not understand that when it opposes a domestic spending program because it will help blacks and Hispanics, it is opposing a domestic spending program that will help lower income whites also.

Of course, I am thinking mainly of a single payer health plan, but there are other examples as well.

Europeans must recoil in horror and disgust against America's love affair with the gun. I have read that in Europe even conservatives ask, "Why would anyone want to own a gun?"

Needless to say, I agree with those criticisms. But, perhaps I am projecting my national alienation onto the Europeans.

I think of Europeans as the creators of the greatest civilization in the history of the world. I think of Europe as a continent where politicians who appreciate high culture do not feel the need to pretend to the voters that they would rather watch a sports event than a play by Euripides, or attend a symphony concert.

Europe is a continent with a low crime rate, little poverty, well funded public sectors of the economy, and an appreciation for civilized leisure.

Americans think of a rich man as someone who delivered newspapers at the age of twelve to help support his widowed mother, and several younger sisters. Europeans know that wealth is the result of being born with money, and/or with rare and valuable talents. Luck helps too. That gives the Europeans a more rational view of economic inequality.

One adjective encapsulates my view of the Europeans: "civilized."

I do not loathe the country of my birth. Nevertheless, everything I appreciate about the United States is true of Europe. What else I appreciate is found immediately east of the Atlantic Ocean, and north of the Mediterranean Sea.

 

I always had fun there, but I think things have changed in the past 20yrs.
I would still go for a vacation.
Just don't think Muslims and Christians mix well and big problems headed your way.

 

Islamic immigration is an issue where I agree with President Trump. If those responsible for 9/11 had not been allowed to move her, the Twin Towers would still stand.

Benny Hill used to be very funny in his early days. They were few and far between. He was said to be very lazy. Later on, I don't know what happened, he went mad and produced dozens of more mediocre programmes. I don't know what happened. Maybe you can find the first one's on youtube.

No, believe me, for the vast majority of Europeans, America is just a big question mark. We have difficulty to imagine what you REALLY are like. It's mainly your politics that are criticised. For young people they imagine you are like the people in your television series. Older people who have visited America find you very friendly. But Europe is bigger than you think. The chances of being blown up by a bomb are one in a million.
